* Ajay Devgan 'shocked' Kajol!
by Debasis Jana
Ajay Devgan seems to have mastered the art of doing a good job in action roles as well as emotional ones. But his latest effort - playing a mentally challenged father in 'Main Aisha Hi Hoon' is getting him the highest accolades from those who have taken a sneak peek at the film. And it was wife Kajol who paid him a memorable compliment recently. A source close to director Harry Baweja informed us that Kajol was apparently very impressed with her husband's latest performance. "It's been 15 days since I saw 'Main Aisha Hi Hoon', but I am still hung up about it. I am shocked that you could make such an emotional film!" She is said to have told Harry when she met him recently. Coming from an amazingly talented actress like Kajol we think Ajay should take a bow - again!
* "We are still going strong," Preity!
by Debasis Jana
When the rumour of actress Preity Zinta's break-up with her boyfriend Ness Wadia, roaming heavily in the air, we contacted Preity over telephone; Preity is currently in Australia for the shooting of Yash Raj production's latest movie 'Salaam Namaste' opposite Saif Ali Khan. Preity was apparently shocked to hear the rumour. However, she rubbished all the rumours and said that they are still going strong.
Preity and industrialist Ness Wadia have been industry's latest lovebirds for quite sometime. However Preity said that her absence in the tinsel town could be a reason for the rumour.

* Rani's clothes create feud!
Bollywood's forthcoming biggie "Bunty Aur Babli" is embroiled in a plagiarism row over a designer poncho worn by Rani Mukherjee in the film.
Designer Suneet Varma has vowed to sue fellow designer Aki Narula, who styled for actors in the film, the filmmakers and actress Rani Mukherjee for sporting a blue poncho with tassels in the film's advertisements without any credit or payment to him.
"I made that poncho," Suneet told. "It has been published in my ads for the last few months and now I suddenly see Rani Mukherjee wearing it in the film's posters.
"And Aki is the costume designer. It's a direct lift."
Narula counters that he had no clue about the poncho being Varma's work and bought it off the shelf from a Mumbai store. "Anyone who styles anything, including a film, knows that not everything is made by the designer who is styling the thing. It's a question of putting things together," tells Narula.
"All the stylists are on my side. Am I mad that I'll copy something for a product that 800 million people would see?
"If Suneet thinks this will give him some extra publicity so be it."
Varma is determined to get to the bottom of this. "I told Aki if he has bought it from somewhere he should be able to show me a bill. Then I'll take the shop to task. How can they sell something without my name or any credit or any money coming to me?"
In the middle of all this, the fate of Yashraj Films' "Bunty Aur Babli" - starring Rani Mukherjee, Abhishek and Amitabh Bachchan seems uncertain.

* "Aishwarya Rai on the Oprah Winfrey show"
Or
"How reasonable is the flak Ash received for her appearance on Oprah show?"
"Actress Aishwarya Rai is going places. In literal sense! If not in terms of the box-office performance of her films then at least in her international appeal. The gorgeous actress made an appearance on the renowned Oprah Winfrey show. Incidentally Aishwarya is the first Indian actress to feature on the popular TV show "
In a country of 1billion people a single lady goes on a platform as popular as the Oprah Winfrey Show. Hailing from the Hindi film industry and being the first Indian to be invited on an international talk show of such magnitude… the experience can be quite unnerving.Be it at Cannes, her statue inauguration at Madame Tussauds wax museum, or an international premiere of her movie; instead of rejoicing her success back home like a nation full of cynics we cannot look beyond the lady’s wardrobe and giggles. We call her fake, shrug her success as dubious and label it as marketing. Agreed, on the Oprah show she did not answer a few questions the way some intellectuals here could have and at times maybe her costumes have been misappropriate, but then how fair is it to minimize the magnitude of her success to just that? Have we as a nation become so unwelcoming of someone’s success that we have collectively decided to overlook it?Can we not bargain and give the lady benefit of doubt before ripping apart every lap of her success?Article

* Ramesh Sippy's next?
By Taran Adarsh, April 27th 2005 - 0930 hrs IST
Ramesh Sippy is getting back into production in a big way. The maker of SHOLAY has almost completed a film with newcomers, directed by Vikram Bhatt.
Son Rohan Sippy's film, starring Sanjay Dutt and Abhishek Bachchan, will start by the end of this year. Also, there's a film with director Milan Luthria, starring Nana Patekar and John Abraham.
Furthermore, the year may witness Sippy Sr. bouncing back with his own film, which is expected to be a biggie. "I am still working on the script. But till I am through with the final draft, I wouldn't like to finalize the star cast," he smiles.
There has been a considerable gap between Sippy's last release [ZAMANA DEEWANA] and his new project. "I was constantly thinking what to make next. And when something did fascinate me, I decided to start work on it," he explains.
There's talk that Sippy Sr.'s film is expected to star the Big B and Jr. B in principal roles, but the veteran flashes a modest smile when you quiz him about it. "Nothing is on the cards yet. Please wait," he says. We are waiting!
* Sush unmasks Salman Khan
By IndiaFM News Bureau, April 27th, 2005 - 1030 hrs IST
“She is beautiful, he is brawny
She is the stunning diva; he leads the brat pack of Bollywood
If she is mesmerizing, you can't debate on the original muscle-man
She lives life queen-size; he has a lion's heart”
^ Sushmita Sen & Salman Khan
The paparazzi never looses its fascination for the controversy Khan. While they nailed him for the black buck incident, the whiplash wasn't too far when he mowed down people in the drunken driving incident. But off late the media & macho man seem to have called it truce. The shutterbugs love every move the 40 year old makes. Be it helping a stranger or his charity causes, the flashbulbs are 'loving it!'
This kind of blurs the real Salman. So we got his best bud, Sushmita Sen to unmask the enigma for you. God, bad, misunderstood, mischief maker, girlfriend beater...will the real Salman please stand up?
Sushmita uncovers the Khan for you… (as if he needed any more of that)
Lucky you, read on…
# Mr. Misunderstood
“He just doesn't feel the need to clear himself”
“Let me start with what has defined Salman, his absolute disregard to clarify himself. This is very characteristic of Salman. When he does something, he believes that he doesn't have to extend an explanation or justification to support it. We will offer you no reason for what he did. Even if it releases him of the trouble or bad name, he sees no point in justifying his stand” Sushmita explains. I once asked him, why he did that and he said, “If you have to explain yourself, then the relationship has nothing going for it” I left it at that.
## The Rock
“Salman is fiercely possessive about his family”
“Oh, I can go on and on about him as a family guy. Salman is singularly the most dependable family member one can ask for. I call him the rock. He puts everyone before him. He is extremely selfless when it comes to family & friends. Its one thing to have a family and quite another thing to have their respect and Salman has that. And yes, before you ask me, let me confess that he is fiercely possessive about his family. But that streak of possessiveness creeps in only when there is abundant love and caring.”
### Hero No.1
He told David, “Chemistry is between people, not heights”
“With every other actor in the industry, there is some amount of insecurity that he brings. But take it from me, Salman is different. He is the only actor in the Bollywood who looks me in the eye confidently” she heaps praise. “I must tell you of this time when we shot for Biwi No.1. David Dhawan kept insisting that I take off my stilettos because the height difference wasn't complimentary on screen. But guess what, Salman asked me to keep it on. He told David, 'Sirji, chemistry logon ke beech hoti hain, naki height ke beech' That is how secure that man is. They don't make like him any more” she sighs.
#### The Survivor
“You will never catch Salman complain or crib”
“He has been through hell in his personal and professional life. But like the tough guy image he has, he takes all the blows on his chin and wades through dangerous waters. There are times when he doesn't even share his problems. The best thing about the hunk is that he has a heart that believes that people are going through far worse than what he is. You will never catch him magnify or blow up his problems. Salman doesn't know what it is to complain or crib. He has amazing steel in him.”
##### My 4 am friend
“He pooped his party and stayed by Renee all night!”
“If he believes in you, then the guy will take on the world for you, an absolute blessing as a friend. I will never forget what he did for Renee. One night, she took ill. It was 2 in the morning and the fever wasn't showing any signs of falling. I wanted to take her to the Doc but my chauffer wasn't in for duty. Just then, the phone rang and it was Salman asking me to join him at Lobby Bar for a party. When I told him the scene back home, he hung up on me and showed up at my apartment in 15 minutes flat with a doctor in toe! He pooped his party and stayed up all night with Renee! That's Salman for you.”
###### Macho turns Mellow
“Oh, sure, everybody does, Salman has mellowed too. He has gotten in touch with the softer side of him which always existed. He has learnt not to react to everything. What I particularly like is, he has got a lot more discreet about things. He now first thinks and then shoots…”
“You want to have a relation with Salman? Poor you!”
“This is what I tell girls looking for romance with the Khan. As a friend…? I would recommend him to every single girl in town but want luv-shuv, then you gotta be careful women. Whenever I meet Katrina, I tell her, 'Poor you!' and we both break into a giggle.”
“Put all these pieces together and there, you have Salman Khan! I always tell people, 'If you are able to see Salman from my eyes, then you'll see no wrong in him. There are no 'ifs' and 'buts' to this man, he lives it from the heart. And that's why I call him, jaan!”

* Salman: Lucky again!
Neha Dhupia may have said that only sex and Shah Rukh Khan sell in Bollywood today, but we would like to expand that axiom just a little - according to what we know, the three Khans sell in showbiz these days. Be it Shah Rukh, Aamir or the troublesome third K-factor, Salman, when it comes to the box office, no one pulls in the crowd like these three 'Khan' do. So, in spite of not-too-positive reviews and mixed responses, the Salman Khan starrer 'Lucky' has proved to be indeed lucky for the star. Going by the trade reports, the film is still doing good business. And though Salman has taken a backstage (he's isn't interested these days in beating his own drum), the other three newcomers, Vinay, Radhika (the two directors) and heroine Sneha Ullal are basking in the glory. Talk of Khan power...and his 'Lucky' streak, of course!

Interview # 9
This Interview is from “www.santabanta.com”
* 'I'm from the land of Kama Sutra!'
Finally the Ash Wednesday has arrived in America. Though the holy day for many may have passed on the calendar but for the film buffs it falls tomorrow when they meet 'the most beautiful woman on the planet' - our very own Aishwarya Rai on the Oprah Winfrey Show.
With the daily viewership of approx. 26 million in the US alone, the show reaches 130 countries across the globe and aptly called No 1 talk show. But what makes today's episode special is Aishwarya Rai, who makes a stunning appearance in pants where as the queen of American Television, Oprah, drapes a sari to greet the former Miss World.
This is Aishwarya's third appearance on the American Television after Bob Simon's 60 Minutes and David Letterman's show and here is how Oprah describes our most prized possession to her audience:
A lot of people say 30-year-old Aishwarya Rai is the most beautiful woman on the planet. This former Miss World is the international face of L'Oreal, Coca-Cola and DeBeers diamonds. She's also the number one box office film star in the world. The movies made in Bollywood—India's Hollywood and the film capital of the world—reach more than five billion people worldwide, twice that of Hollywood.
This Bollywood beauty is a shrewd businesswoman, raking in the American equivalent of about $15 million a film. But you will not see sex in her movies. Not even a kiss.
"I come from the land of the Kama Sutra," Aishwarya says. "So we obviously do have a normal, healthy sex life. Kissing is a more private expression of emotions. So I guess art imitates life and that kind of comes across in our cinema as well."
Wholesome and deeply religious, Ash, as she's known, is fashionably hip and quite sexy. "Actually," she says, "I don't think I'm really into setting trends or following trends. I just do my own thing." She loves traditional saris like this one she brought for Oprah. "It's very sensual!" Oprah says.
Ash also follows tradition and lives at home with her parents like most single Indian women. "Back home, you're a loser if you say, 'Mom, I'm out of here,'" Ash says. "In India it's more about the family, about living together, about remaining connected, and that's probably the most beautiful special thing about it."
Here are some of the excerpts from the interview to be aired on Oprah Winfrey Show tonight:
Oprah: I think you're gorgeous. When you look at yourself, do you see that?
Aishwarya: To me, beautiful is as beautiful does. I think that's what speaks volumes. It isn't about the apparent gig. It's about what you do.
Oprah: We did a show recently where we were looking at women around the world, and we were talking to French women at a cafe. … They said Americans are all fat.
Aishwarya: I'm from India, I wouldn't say that because Indian people eat well, we're well endowed.
Oprah: Do they say we're rude?
Aishwarya: No, Indian people are very hospitable.
Oprah: Do they say we talk too much?
Aishwarya: Opinionated maybe.
Oprah: Do they say we get a lot of divorces?
Aishwarya: Ah, that could be a discussion.
Oprah: You know what, you could be a diplomat!

* Karan Johar now turns actor!
After Farhan Akhtar made his announcement, another hotshot filmmaker is all set to turn actor. Karan Johar, who started his career as a child actor in the TV serial Indradhanush and later played Shah Rukh Khan's buddy in DDLJ, is set to face the camera again.
This time, for Sujoy Ghosh’s Home Delivery.
Ghosh himself faced the camera for a cameo in Onir’s My Brother Nikhil. "I thought I gave the best performance in the film," smiles Ghosh.
“With directors turning to acting, I think stars have good reason to feel threatened. But seriously, I'm glad Karan has agreed to be in my film. He’ll play himself. I’m also getting Juhi Chawla to make an appearance in the film. I can't imagine making a film without her," says Ghosh.
Vivek Oberoi plays the lead in Home Delivery. Ghosh, whose film Jhankaar Beats went on to become a cult hit and the only truly successful “multiplex film”, has been struggling to put together his post-debut film for nearly two years now.
“It took me six months to write my script. And then the casting process began. Besides Vivek, I’ve got Boman Irani, Ayesha Takia and Mahima Chaudhary.”
Shabbir Boxwallah, a close associate of Rajiv Rai, will produce the film for Sahara and Percept Films. Like Jhankaar Beats, Ghosh’s new venture will have music by Vishal-Shekhar. “I can’t make a film without music. I’ve already recorded the title song.
Someone up there will love it,” says the young director who recently lost his father.
Ghosh describes his new film as an emotional comedy. “There are risqué jokes, and then there are the naughty but nice jokes that one can share in civil company. Home Delivery falls in that category.”
He admits he’s moved on to this project only because his film with Amitabh Bachchan got delayed. “I was dying to make my dream film, Borivili, with Mr Bachchan.
But there’s a slight problem. I’m not leaving this industry until I make my film with Mr Bachchan. So if they want me out, they had better make sure I get to make Borivili.”

* Urmila's TV debut in Aahat 2
Urmila's love for the supernatural thrillers is no secret. In her upcoming flick 'Naina' as well, the versatile actress had her share of spook chills. But now we hear that this hot Marathi mulgi is also making a debut on the small screen in 'Aahat 2', a horror show on Sony.
These two special episodes feature telly star Chetan Hansraj along with the oomph queen and will be telecast on May 20 and 27.
Why is Urmila doing this, hear from the pretty lady herself.
“I’m doing this because of my film Naina. This is just those one-off TV assignments. I play my screen character who is being interviewed in a chat show in which I relate my supernatural experiences,” she gushes with a broad smile.
So... get ready to be 'chilled' with hot Ms Matondkar.

* Ajay’s problem with Vivek
Vivek Oberoi has often been made a victim of Ajay’s pranks. The latter has had whale of a time at Vivek’s expense while shooting for Masti. Ajay played a trick on Vivek once again. This time on the sets of Soham Shah’s Kaal. It seems they were shooting in Bangkok. Vivek had some Thai food. The next day he could not make it on the sets on time. Vivek it seems was suffering from constipation. Now it is believed that Ajay had mixed something in Vivek’s food to give him constipation. But Vivek refused to believe that. “I think there was a genunine problem with the Thai food I had,” he maintained. Do we see Ajay grinning?
* Ash at Cannes again!
Aishwarya Rai is to visit Cannes once again. Accompanying her will be the winner of Aish-Cash contest. Of course boyfriend Vivek Oberoi will make it a point to be besides her. Besides this Ash also hit headlines when she was invited for the Time dinner in honour of 100 most influential people in the world held in New York. “I met Nicole Kidman and Sean Penn there. Nicole had to rush for film premiere. Sean Penn complimented me saying that I was beautiful. He was humility personified. For me the whole experience was humbling,” she said. When told about Sneha Ullal, her lookalike, “I wish her the best,” Ash said.

Interview # 9
This Interview if from “www.mahiram.com”
* I find exposure disgusting, says Salman Khan
The man who needs little reason to take off his
shirt in films, says he hates exposure. According
to Salman Khan, good cinema is one that the entire
family can watch together.
Q. What is Lucky all about?
A. It's a sweet love story with an innocent feel to it.
There's no exposure in the film and it's very nice and
clean. I play the son of India's ambassador in an East
European country who meets a schoolgirl called Lucky.
Things start to go wrong after that. A civil war breaks
out and every kind of bad luck imaginable befalls the
two. However amidst all the upheaval they fall in love.
Lucky in fact shows how love transforms a girl into a
woman.
Q. Radhika Rao is the second woman director you are working
with after Revathy in Phir Milenge. How was the
experience?
A. I don't see a director as male or female. Radhika and
Vinay (Lucky's co-director) were completely in sync with
each other. I never saw any difference of opinion
between the two. In fact they were so much in tune that
often I would see one of them start to say something and
the other completing the thought. They had the final
authority on each shot. All I want to say about Revathy
is that she is a brilliant director in her own right and
makes films on subjects of relevance.
Q. Was it difficult working with two directors in Lucky?
What do you think about the new breed of Bollywood
filmmakers?
A. I've worked with Abbas-Mastan bhai in Mujshe Shaadi
Karogi and even before that I have had as many as nine
directors for a film. In comparison this was a piece of
cake. As for young directors, after Puneet Issar in
Garv, this is the next lot of young directors I have
worked with and I enjoyed the experience immensely. They
come with fresh ideas, have their own take on the story
and have amazing scripts. They do a lot of research and
pay a lot of attention to the story and dialogues.
Moreover, they are very sound in the technical aspects
of filmmaking. That is why it's so great to work with
them.
Q. How do you see the success of Phir Milenge given the
fact that it wasn't a box office hit?
A. When filmstars try to convey a social message such as
awareness against AIDS, it usually reaches a wider
audience in the country. The message is still going out
through DVDs and CDs and that is what the success of
Phir Milenge is all about.
Q. You have now spent over 15 years in the film industry.
What changes have you seen in this period and how do you
relate yourself to it today?
A. Personally, from 1988 to this date, I have gained
weight, lost some hair and my voice has changed! As for
the industry, it has become technically very sound and
competitive. We have very competent directors. There's
no place like the film industry - so many beautiful
people from so many different religions, caste and creed
work together in complete harmony day in and day out. I
am indeed lucky to be a part of Bollywood.
Q. You have played the romantic hero, done action and
comedy too. What excites you most as an actor?
A. I am the same in all my films. I have done comedy all my
life. But on a more serious note I like doing different
kinds of roles - action, romance or comedy - I love
doing all. I am in love with my job.
Q. How do you react to flops?
A. I watched Hello Brother and Dil Ne Jisse Apna Kaha at
home!
Q. What do you think of exposure in films?
A. I hate exposure in films and find it disgusting.
Q. What, according to you, is good cinema?
A. Any film that a family can sit together and watch is
good cinema. Every time that you want to be the man or
woman you see on screen and feel the emotions - that is
what good cinema means to me. It can make you laugh or
cry with equal ease. Finally, good cinema is also one
that makes money!
Q. What does 'star power' mean to you?
A. I don't think there's anything called power. The most
powerful people today will eventually die of old age or
may end up behind bars for their misdeeds. So no one is
powerful; everyone is a human being first and can suffer
like any human being.
Q. How do you deal with adversity and what pushes you on?
A. When someone puts me down - I'm encouraged to push on. I
make sure that I stand up and sit on the shoulder of
that person who tries to put me down. Although
compliments push me on, I don't take them seriously. I
only give two per cent of my capacity.
Q. Who do you look up to as your idol and why?
A. I am grateful to my dad for teaching me the right
principles in life and for his straightforward approach.
I also have immense respect for Dharamji and Sunil
Duttji for the same reasons. And sit goes without saying
that I love Baba (Sanjay Dutt).
Q. Of late many actors from Pakistan have come to India and
vice-versa. What do you have to say about such cultural
exchanges between the two countries?
A. I have never seen India or Pakistan like each other. But
I am sure another war will never happen. All issues will
be settled across the table. In fact the warmongers
should be sent to the border to fight it out amongst
themselves.
Q. What projects do you currently have on hand?
A. There is Priyadarshan's next film that may be called
Kyunki. It is inspired by a Tamil film. I am also
looking forward to Shaadi Karke Phas Gaya - it's a
rocking film. I would call it super. I am confident that
people will love it. Then there's Maine Pyar Kyun Kiya,
No Entry and more.
Q. Rumours say that you are doing Ramayan. Is that true?
And what is the status of Sanjay Leela Bhansali's
Bajirao Mastani?
Q. I don't know as of now. They are scheduled for later.
There's also Sahib Biwi Aur Ghulam and a Hollywood
venture Marigold about a choreographer in the film
industry who falls in love with an English woman.
Shooting for the film started on March 27 in Mumbai and
then we will go to Goa, Rajasthan, Jodhpur, etc.

* Interview: AASHUTOSH RANA
“MOMENTS WITH AASHUTOSH RANA”
By Our Staff
After so many flops Aashutosh Rana has nothing in hand as far as the movie offer is concerned. He is left behind in the race for stardom. But he is satisfied with his forthcoming 'Shabnam-Mausi'. He believes in paying attention to his character, and says," Kalakar nahin kirdar chalta hai". We met him recently.
Excerpts of his interview:
Q. Isn't 'Shabnam-Mausi's release being delayed?
A. 'Shabnam-Mausi' is the first film of the producer. So, he is not well versed with financial problems, which are mostly faced during the project. That's why many films with good ideas get delayed even after their muhurt. But I really admire Sudhesh Bhosle for doing a very good job even in the wake of problems.
Q. Don't you think that its delayed release will lose its craze among the viewers?
A. Yes, I know that soon after the muhurt of 'Shabnam-Mausi', a Kinnar MLA lost the election. So, the news about the movie shifted from page one to an inside page. However, I don't think that we should ignore her importance on that count.
Q. Aren't you repeating a challenging role in 'Shabnam- Mausi' after playing Gokul Pandey in 'Dushman' and Lajjashankar Pandey in 'Sangharsh'?
A. Yes. 'Kalakar nahin kirdar chalta hai'. So, many actors think that they have succeeded in making their movie a hit, but actually their characters have fared very well. I never live in dream. But if I have played the character well, it means I have acted well.
Q. It is said that you play a strong character even in a weak film?
A. I never think of any other thing except my character in the film. I try to play it what about film whether it is good or bad I never stick my mind in this.
Q. Don't you think that it directly affects your Stardom?
A. No actor can surely say that the film in which he is working will hit or flop. I admitted that in beginning I have given so many flops but viewers love my character that's why I am in this industry.

Interview # 11

* Interview: Esha Deol
“ESHA HIKES HER REMUNERATION”
By Our Staff
Esha Deol is proud that she has inherited beauty. She has thus blasted the myth spread by her critics that she has been overweight and not very attractive in the beginning of her career though she is the daughter of dream girl Hema Malini. This myth was created presumably because Esha began her career in the role of a married woman in her 'Koi Mere Dilse Pooche'. Since she played the role of a married woman, it was but natural for her to look slightly weighty and not like that of a fresh face. However, this role went against her image and this continued until she got 'Dhoom', a multistarrer.
That's why several of her other movies like 'Na Tum Jaano Naa Hum', 'Kya Dil Ne Kaha', 'Chura Liya Hai Tumne' and 'LoC' proved flop after flop. This created a sort of doubt in the minds of the producers about her performance, and they distanced from her. However, the year 2004 proved lucky for her. Her performance in Maniratnam's 'Yuva' brought her a wide appreciation. Then she got Yash Chopra's 'Dhoom' directed by Sanjay Gadvi, where Esha looked sexy as well as glamorous.
This enchanted the viewers and the critics alike, and she became a star overnight. This changed Esha's status altogether. So, she has started dictating terms to her producers by hiking her fee. Yes, she is following in the footsteps of Kareena Kapoor, who increases her fee every time. Kareena is known for it and gets the increased fee from producers. Will Esha be able to get the same treatment from her filmmakers is yet to be seen? We had a chat with the actress in this regard.
Q. Is your demand for higher fee just as you got a hit only recently?
A. I am demanding it because I am getting it. If I don't demand it then how will I get it? My filmi career is on ascendancy these days. So, I am demanding high fee. If I don't demand now, I shall never get it. If I get a big banner movie, then I am ready to make a compromise. Moreover, a little more money as my fee hardly matters to a producer who spends a huge sum of Rs 500 million in making a movie.
Q. Isn't it true that you have compromised with the bold and sexy trend since your 'Dhoom'?
A. This is wrong. Neither was I disheartened with my flops nor did I compromise. I have only tried to present myself in a better way unlike a carefree person in the past. Now, I shall not repeat the past. I have inherited beauty and I have learnt to use it. I am going to present myself as a challenge to other actresses.
Q. What about your being linked first with Aftaab, then with Tusshar and now with Santino, brother of Dino Morea?
A. I have already wasted my valuable time in these things. One needs to devote a lot of time to one's boyfriend. And, I do not have that much of time. I have been able to build up my career after a long struggle. So, I can't afford to be careless now. For the time being, I am concentrating all my attention on my career.

Interview # 12
This Interview is from “www.filmfare.com”
* Interview: Vivek Oberoi
“Vivek Oberoi: 'I believe in a supernatural force!'”
DOMINIC FERRAO
INDIATIMES MOVIES
Q. What does ‘Kaal’ mean?
A. “I think it means too many things. When you see the film, you will understand. It will mean different things to different people.”
Q. What kind of film is ‘Kaal’? Is it a thriller or a ghost story?
A. “The least said, the better, because ‘Kaal’ has already excited a huge amount of curiosity with the promos. And for a film which relies so much on the suspense factor, I would spoil all the fun if I let the cat out of the bag!”
Q. The title suggests it’s a dark film...
A. “It’s in its own genre. It’s a thriller, it’s got drama, it’s got elements of horror in it. So I don’t think it belongs to any specific genre. It’s not something that you can pin down. It’s a step in a new direction by a new director, Soham, who is a whiz kid and very talented.”
Q. We hear you’ve shot with tigers. What was the experience like?
A. “You heard wrong. I wasn’t shooting with tigers; the tigers were shooting with me! Jokes apart, I’ve seen tigers on ‘National Geographic’ and in zoos before, but to see tigers in real life and so up close and personal is a phenomenal experience! I had to do the first shot with tigers in the film, so as usual we had Ajay Devgan, John Abraham and everybody ragging me, saying, ‘It was nice knowing you, buddy,’ and ‘We’d like to say a few final words to you...’ What happened was - the tiger was supposed to approach us from behind. And Allen, the stunt director, being a cautious man, we did about 15 rehearsals. So I was quite ready. The shot is where I am supposed to pick up a car wheel-cap and look at Lara and Esha, who are looking behind me with horrified expressions. I turn around and there’s the tiger approaching me! When the shot was actually done, I was so mesmerised by the sight of the tiger – it was beautiful in a way, almost hypnotic – that I just stood there without doing anything. Then I remembered the shot and quickly walked away. It was an experience to remember.”
Q. Which of you was most scared on the sets?
A. “A guy called Vineet, who was supposed to drive the car in the film. He was petrified of the tigers. Soham, Allen and I got together and went up to him. We began discussing the shot in front of him. I was like, ‘Soham, in the next shot the tiger comes and sits on the bonnet, right?’ And Vineet panicked and refused to do the shot! That was hilarious.”
Q. Were Lara Dutta and Esha Deol scared silly of the cats? Did you play pranks on them?
A. “The girls are real toughies. They were not scared at all. We didn’t play any pranks on Esha and Lara, but they joined us in playing pranks on others. We singled out one guy for our jokes and I began making calls to him, whispering and making strange sounds over the phone. I knew Ajay was coming there in three days, so I was setting up the situation. When Ajay arrived, I told him about the prank and that now his touch was required. The next thing we know, when the guy went to his room, there were strange things written with blood in Urdu all over his mirror. The words said, ‘I am coming for you.’ The blood was obviously fake. And he started panicking. Then we took a photograph of him and we distorted it, and told him there was a strange presence behind him even in the photograph. Finally he went up to Soham and told him that he was going back to Bombay, that he couldn’t stay there any more! Only then did we stop.”
Q. What’s the USP of ‘Kaal’? Why should the audience go and see it?
A. “It’s the only film of its kind. You’ve seen the promos and you should know.”
Q. You seem to have had fun shooting the two songs...
A. “I loved doing the videos of the two songs, ‘Rafta Rafta’ and ‘Tauba Tauba’, and working with Farah Khan. She’s my favourite choreographer in the whole world. I used to be her assistant, seven-eight years ago, and now I am working with her.”
Q. John Abraham is fast gaining ground as an actor. What do you think of his performance?
A. “John’s a wonderful guy and I enjoyed working with him. While he was not busy brushing his hair or applying litres of oil for long shots, where you can’t even see somebody’s face – while he’s not doing all that, he was wonderful to be with! He’s very intelligent and a nice person. I’m glad I have a friend like him.”
Q. Did you give him tips on acting?
A. “Who am I to give him tips on acting? He gave me tips, and I used them.”
Q. How involved was Karan Johar?
A. “He is the best producer I have had so far. He has spoilt me rotten. Every single one of us was given excellent food; we had packages coming from Bombay. We had DVDs and DVD libraries available to us in Corbett. We had great rooms. Every comfort you could think of was provided. Now I understand why people say that Dharma Productions spoils you.”
Q. Do you believe in ghosts?
A. “I believe in a supernatural force. I don’t know whether they are ghosts or something else, but I do believe that there are spirits. I believe they exist.”
Q. Do you believe in numerology and predictions?
A. “Yes, I think it works. I’ve seen many people make predictions that have worked. The thing is that it’s like science. There are some good doctors and there are bad doctors. Good doctors know how to operate and the patient is cured, while bad doctors operate and the patient dies. You don’t blame science; you blame the doctor. Similarly, some numerologists are very good and some are bad.”
Q. What do you do if someone predicts something bad is going to happen to you?
A. “While astrology and numerology may hold certain truths for certain people, I think what’s most important is your belief. If you believe in yourself, you believe in your maker, your creator - that is more than enough. The world is nothing more than what you believe. I think that’s all that matters.”
Q. Do you wear a good luck charm to ward off evil?
A. “I wear my faith and I believe in God.”

* Pritish Nandy apologized to SRK, but the ice not melted!
by Debasis Jana
You know Pritish Nandy Communications organize Sansui Award every year, but this year they are in trouble after Shah Rukh Khan and all his friends (which means practically 75 per cent of the film industry) decided to boycott the award. The unwanted incident happened in the 'Shabd' screening, actually made SRK take such decision. What happened, in the above-said film's screening, Rongita, Pritish Nandy's daughter asked Shah Rukh's wife Gauri Khan and friend Karan Johar to leave since the show wasn't meant for the people from in side Bollywood. Shah Rukh Khan understandably took umbrage to people close to him being subjected to such an embarrassing situation.
Recently there was a report about Shah Rukh-PNC patch up, but a close friend of Shah Rukh completely rubbishes this report. Mean while Pritish Nandy on the behalf of PNC apologized to SRK. "We've apologized to SRK, although there was absolutely no intention to hurt or offend. It's a matter of policy for us to not show our films to people within the film industry," Pritish informed. However, the ice between SRK and PNC didn't melt yet. "SRK's not one to take any insult, intentional or unintentional, to his loved ones lying down. And when it comes to his wife Gauri he's absolutely hyper. Shah Rukh was livid after what happened at the 'Shabd' screening. There's no way he will overlook the incident," said one of SRK's close friends.

* Nandita follows in Ash's footsteps!
After Aishwarya Rai, it's now dusky beauty Nandita Das' turn to present her opinion on some of the world's best movies. Yes, she's been selected as a member of the latest Cannes jury, to be headed by Emir Kusturica. The nine-member panel will include such well known personalities as Hong Kong director John Woo, actress Salma Hayek, Nobel laureate in literature Toni Morrison, French director Agnes Varda, German director Fatih Akin, Spanish actor Javier Bardem and French director Benoit Jaquot. Looks like Bollywood's leading ladies are definitely set on making their country proud!
* The 'Paheli' of SRK's mouche!
It's not really a mismatch but, hey, we've also been wondering what one of the most serious champions of alternative cinema is doing with the top stars of the day. Yes, we all know that Amol Palekar is directing a movie called 'Paheli' for Shah Rukh Khan, starring the King Khan himself, along with Rani Mukherjee. So does that mean that another once-averse-to mainstream cinema filmmaker has jumped on to the commercial bandwagon? But something has to be different about this one, especially considering that it is a Palekar film. And here's what it is: Shah Rukh will make his appearance with a long, twirling moustache! As Palekar told us, "I thought it looked completely different from the usual 'Shah Rukh Khan films' we've seen so far. I don't think people were expecting to see him with a moustache and playing an authentically ethnic persona. In fact, I though the reaction would be about his appearance and not about my making a 'different' film." While we must reserve our comments on this avatar of our hero, we wonder how it will tickle all those SRK fans who adore his youthful, chikna look!
* Rani, Kareena and Hrithik: X-pression 25?
There's no dearth of talent in tinselville. And there are new actors rising over the horizon each day; some make it, some don't. Some come in with a coating of golden luck; others spend their time striving for their share of it. When we asked director Sudhir Mishra of 'Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi' fame, who has worked with some of the best art-house actors as well as hot-selling commercial stars, he aptly said, "I didn't see the difference working with Naseer or Anil Kapoor - they're all as dedicated. And there are many promising actors in this generation, too. Look at Rani - her potential is there for all to see. Even Kareena is very inventive with her acting and Ajay Devgan can be brilliant when he wants to be. Hrithik is outstanding - the level of characterisation that he did in 'KMG' has never been done by an Indian actor. Most of them have potential to be excellent, but only if they become a bit more adventurous, instead of showcasing situations where expressions Number 22 and 24 are all worked out. I think between Hrithik, Kareena and Rani, a lot of the future is covered!" Well, guys, which expression are you working on now - Number 25?
* Vivek Oberoi: Delivery Boy?
Director Sujoy Ghosh is on a different beat these days. After basking in the success of his last film 'Jhankaar Beats' for two years, his next film is up and rolling. And well, this one is hitting the headlines already. Besides having a star cast like Vivek Oberoi, Ayesha Takia, Mahima Chaudhury and Boman Irani, the film boasts of having on the credit roll a man who loves cinema and coffee (in that order). It's Karan Johar - who will be making a special appearance in Sujoy Ghosh's film, 'Home Delivery'. Shabbir Boxwalla (who co-produced the Ash starrer 'Dil Ka Rishta'), will be producing this film, says, "It's a light-hearted film with emotional moments. Ayesha Takia plays the love interest, and Mahima is the hottie. And Karan Johar plays himself." And who is playing the delivery boy, Vivek? "Well I can't reveal that," he replies. We guess, we'll just call 'home delivery' for that answer then.

Indians need to stop critizing Ash and praise her instead. No other actress had achieved what she has internationally and none has her stunning face

I live far from India and have nothing whatsoever affiliates with India but when someone from your country representing you to a worldwide audience, you should support them to the fullest. Aishwarya Rai is doing nothing but making more people interested in India and Bollywood and it's a shame to hear her compatriot critizing her for what, her giggle. What a shame. India should be proud of Ash and be happy for her rather than trying to bring her down.

Stop criticizing her so much, even as much to her wardrobe. The Indian Countrymen needs to give her credit for making it this far. Every time I hear news of Ash, it's always negative. C'mon give this lady some credit, I don't remember seeing any Indian star making it big, even to the Oprah Show, giver her a break, please. Have some faith and pray for her, instead of giving her a bad name. I'm not even Indian and I am so proud of her. Go ASH!!!!!!
###### Mai Lee
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If the success were rightly earned and deserving, we Indians would be the first to laud the efforts and give the person a demi-God status. Why it doesn't happen in Ash's case is because there is no substance to it. Indians have realized Ash's hollowness and it is for USA (& others) to realize it. It wont be a long wait. Hopefully we will be spared of these marketing gimmicks soon. Can Ash boast of anything that she has earned? Her beauty is God's gift to her, so lets count the Beauty Pageant titles out - and anyway that was a long long time ago. Since then what has been her achievements for her claim to the fame / superstardom / acceptability (that she desperately craves).
####### Pankaj Desai
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I feel a lot of people feel negatively towards Ash and her appearances because we know that there are many a more talented people in this industry and when someone like Ash cannot answer questions intelligently, then it looks bad on Indian's after all, she is representing not only the Indian film industry but also India. Do we want people overseas to think that all actresses in India and dumb bimbos?? I don't think so.
######## Preeti
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I think she deserves a standing ovation for all the pride that she's got our country.
######### Sanketh Rao
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I think it is very reasonable. Being an Indian living in the US, Ash comes across as a want to be. It is sad that at age 30 she is still immature. Her only task was to answer the question, not give out complicated response when not needed. I think she was so involved with herself on how to speak in a right accent and use big words that she did not even hear the question. Oprah asked her, " Do you think we are rude (as in Americans) Ash replied, Indians are very hospitable people. Her ignorance showed immediately. How clueless can one be? As far as kissing goes, she needs to get off that bandwagon, since she as already done a kissing scence with Vivek Oberoi. The virgin image is getting stale. Her answers are so predictable, whether it be the Oprah show or 60 minutes, her favourite line is " I will cross that bridge when I get to it”
########## Mona
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sushmita Sen would do a far better job than Ash. She is far more talented and beautiful than Ash!!!
########### N. Ramzan
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Its very reasonable I think and rest assured this is not success. She was on Oprah representing Indian women. She had double the responsibility. One as an Indian and another as a woman. Definitely it is not Aishwarya's fault that she waltzed giggling on the show but its Oprah's for choosing the most amazingly shallow person to represent Indian women. It's not just an affront but it is insult to our intelligence as Indian women to see such a 'namoona' on an International talk show. If you measure success as sitting on that show with Oprah then yes Ash is very successful.
############ Ashu Rajpal
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ash can be described in one word, "boring". Beautiful to look at but ultimately vacuous. She has no life and gives all the right answers but gives us no glimpse as to her real personality. A frightening thought, maybe vacuous is her true personality.
############# Sandy
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Aishwarya Rai deserves all the criticism she has received in the recent past about her appearances on 60 Minutes, David Letterman, and Oprah. She is incapable of completing an interview without reaffirming a stereotype about India. For example, she referred to India as the "land of the Kama Sutra" in 2 of 3 interviews. This is a common stereotype about Indians abroad. What made matter worse was that she reaffirmed this stereotype. Being a representative of India, it is her responsibility to show an aspect of it that isn't already known and isn't portrayed crudely in some of the Hollywood films. She has convinced herself that questions can be answered without actually answering them or giggling at them.
############## Richa
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
To be honest, I used to like Ash, but since she did the cross over I've lost all the respect and admiration for her. For someone who is claiming to be the representative of Indian culture overseas why does she not wear Indian style clothes? I don't see any UK or American actors wearing saris when getting into India. Also, why does she behave so serious in interviews for Indian TV and so "love you all" like in her American TV appearances? I know it's not easy but when I see her on American TV I see no India there, no patriotism, I see nothing representing my culture.
############### Zee Man
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I think that Aishwarya Rai is beautiful, she is talented and she has the kind of mass appeal most Indian celebrities don't. I'm all the way from South America and I watched the Oprah show. Was she supposed to be wearing a saree or chanting a mantra on the stage? None of the other guests wore traditional garments. I think Indians are being too critical of her and what she's "supposed" to do. None of this kind of pressure is exerted on her fellow counterparts...then why her? Come on! She's certainly gorgeous than most other celebs, Stop looking at what she should have worn, said or done and realise how proud she is making Indians feel especially those Indians in other countries who are labeled and made to feel like illiterate country bred nobodies! So if India keeps dissing her then fine...The rest of the world thinks she's got potential to go further than she is now and we'll keep on supporting her!

* Vivek Oberoi, Aish to marry soon
New Delhi, uni:
After months of dilly-dallying, former Miss World Aishwarya Rai has finally decided to wear Bollywood’s matinee idol Vivek Oberoi’s wedding ring.
The actor has revealed this to news channel Aajtak during an interview to be telecast on Sunday.
Answering a question, Vivek said: “When our relationship started two-and-half years ago, people said it will not last, but we are still together.”
“She has been very lucky for me. A right girl brings stability in one’s life,” he added.
Asked about the possibility of working with Aishwarya’s former paramour Salman Khan, Vivek said: “Right now, I am in no mood to work with him” but “life is long and nobody knows what will happen”.
He did not rule out the possibility of working again with Aishwarya “if a producer offers us a good script and story”.
“But I do not work with actresses, I work with directors. It is the director’s prerogative to cast,” he added.
He admitted that he did not think Aishwarya was the most beautiful woman in the world. “The most beautiful woman is my mother, then Madhubala. Aishwarya is only third.”
# No tiff with Jaya
Vivek, who had gone to southern India for charity work after the tsunami disaster, denied that he ever had any confrontation with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalitha.
“Amma had granted us land to build an orphanage. Why would she help me if she had a problem with me?” he wondered.
The comment came following a reported observation made by Ms Jayalalitha that Vivek had done the tsumani relief work only as a “publicity stunt”.
He denied that he had done anything for publicity and the media had gone to cover his work for tsunami victims on their own. “I do not believe in people doing social work only after retirement. I took a three-and-half-month break to work with the people. It is only now that people have noticed it. I have been doing this for the last five years,” he added.

02nd May 2005 09.00 IST
By ApunKaChoice Bureau
It was the biggest hit of its time – 1995 to be precise. But ten years on, Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge is still going strong.
DDLJ, as the film is popularly known, marked the directorial debut of Aditya Chopra and had one of the best on-screen couples in lead roles - Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol .
The late Amrish Puri and ex-censor board chief Anupam Kher played contrasting fathers to Kajol and SRK respectively in the film.
DDLJ is all set to create an all time record when it completes a 500-week run at Mumbai´s Maratha Mandir theatre on May 13. Plans are afoot to release the film all over the world and celebrate the unique event on a very large scale.
The popularity of DDLJ stems from the fact that the film has collected a whooping amount of Rs.11,28,24,771 upto the 495th combined week, just from Mumbai.

* Veer Zaara dominates Bollywood Awards in Atlantic City
01st May 2005 19.45 IST
By Agencies
Yash Chopra's blockbuster Veer Zaara dominated the annual Bollywood Awards in the Atlantic City (US) winning top honours in six categories, including best film, best direction and best actor.
Veer Zaara received the best film award, at the star-studded ceremony at Trump Taj Mahal Casino last night but Shah Rukh Khan , adjudged the best actor, was not present to receive the trophy in person.
A visibly happy Chopra accepted the award for best direction for Veer Zaara, which is based on a love affair between an Indian man and Pakistani woman, played by Shahrukh and Preity Zinta respectively.
A highlight of the ceremony was Madan Mohan, who died in 1975, winning the award for best music in Veer-Zaara. The award was accepted by his grandson.
Chopra used for the movie some of the composer's unused composition which were re-recorded under the direction of maestro's son Sanjeev Kohli. This was first time that a dead composer's unused compositions were used for an entire length of a commercial movie which went on to become a superhit.
The award for best story went to Aditya Chopra for Veer-Zaara and Manish Malhotra got the top honour for designing costumes in the same movie.
Rani Mukherjee and Abhishek Bachchan scored a double each. Mukherjee bagged awards for both best actress and best supporting actress for her performances in Hum Tum and Yuva respectively. Abhishek Bachchan won awards for both best villain and best supporting actor for Yuva.
The awards are based on polling among Non-Resident Indians, after which an experts committee made the final selection.

* Mallika Sherawat covers up for TV debut
By: Shaheen Parkar
May 2, 2005
The prim ’n propah Maya (Ratna Pathak Shah) of the Star One weekly Sarabhai v/s Sarabhai is in for a shock.
And for once, it is not the fault of her cost-cutting daughter-in-law Monisha (Rupali Ganguli). Maya falls prey to a smooth-talking Haryanvi con woman who dupes her.
Essaying the role of this impersonator is Bollywood’s sex symbol Mallika Sherawat. But for her small screen debut, Sherawat is all covered up. What’s more, she’s even got a pallu on her head!
The actress will be seen in Sarabhai v/s Sarabhai in the May 16 episode. Her role is that of a “meethi churi” who takes the Sarabhais for a ride.
She first has the men folk of the Sarabhai household — Indravadhan (Satish Shah), Sahil (Sumeet Rahavan) and Roshesh (Rajesh Kumar) — buzzing around her like bees; when Maya realises her folly, she has already vanished into thin air.
According to producer J D Majethia, “Mallika is a big fan of the Sarabhais. She regularly catches up on the drama. She was really glad to be part of the show and enjoyed herself at the shoot.”
Sherawat shot for Sarabhai on Friday at Kanjur Marg studio. “It was through the channel (Star One) and common friends that Sherawat agreed to star in the TV serial,” says Majethia.
The episode will have the uppity Maya expressing a desire to help a destitute woman.
Enter Mallika, as a Harayanvi con woman, and definitely not the bechari. As soon as she enters the Sarabhai house, she makes everything go topsy-turvy.
As the men are drawn to her like magnets, Maya and Monisha have to bear the brunt.
Mallika also manages to create discord between Maya and her mamma’s boy son Roshesh. Finally, she polishes off a lot of valuables and money before disappearing from the Sarabhai household.
Later, Maya gets a call from the NGO organisation saying that the destitute woman can’t come! They have all been waylaid by the smooth talk of Mallika!
Adds Majethia, “Mallika was extremely professional and shot till late at night to complete the shoot. She’s extremely good at on-the-spot improvisations, which is so important for a comedy.
She put in her own rustic Haryanvi touches to offset Maya’s polished and refined persona. Mallika meeting Maya will be a sheer delight.”

# The Sarabhai v/s Sarabhai saga
This sitcom, written by Aatish Kapadia (well-know for his one-liners), is set in a dysfunctional south Mumbai family.
The retired Indravadan Sarabhai (Satish Shah) is the peacemaker between his wife Maya (Ratna Pathak Shah) and their son Sahil Sarabhai (Sumeet Raghavan) and his wife Monisha (Rupali Ganguli), who stays in the flat next door.
Monisha, a middle-class girl, is always on the lookout for freebies and “buy one, get three”, offers much to the chagrin of Maya who considers herself the priestess of high society.
There is also Roshesh, Sahil’s younger brother, a complete mama’s boy who pens poetry about his mother!
Sarabhai v/s Sarabhai airs every Monday at 9 pm on Star One.

Mumbai: There is no end to what Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan can achieve at the age of 62. He has just received the prestigious Deenanath Mangeshkar Memorial award, his Waqt - The Race Against Time has opened well and Star Plus is set to launch another run of his super-successful Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC) in June. “We’re going ahead with the rehearsals of KBC. This time, the prize money has been doubled from Rs10m to Rs20m,” Bachchan said. “This time, the show is far more interactive. Viewers at home would have far more opportunities to get into the thick of it,” he promised. Amitabh Bachchan was conferred the prestigious Deenanath Mangeshkar award - instituted in memory of the father of Lata Mangeshkar - for his contribution to films on April 24. “Receiving the award was prestigious enough. But to receive it from the hands of the great man’s great daughter was a double honour. Latabai is such a delight,” Bachchan said.
## “Vivek-Aishwarya marriage”
Mumbai: What he thought was an innocuous TV interview has turned out to be a nightmare after Vivek Oberoi was quoted as saying he would marry his love Aishwarya Rai. And Vivek is seething with rage and indignation. A one-to-one with veteran journalist Prabhu Chawla on the programme Seedhi Baat on the Aaj Tak channel has stirred up more trouble than Vivek had ever wanted or expected. A close friend of the couple said: “It isn’t really Vivek’s fault. He never wanted to speak about Ash during the interview. He was forced into doing so because he was repeatedly asked provocative questions about Ash. When he was asked if he would marry her, he naturally said yes.” Countering the interviewer’s questioning, Vivek said he answered as good as he got, only to find his words twisted out of context and beamed on the channel piecemeal to spotlight the juicier parts. The interview has caused immense distress in the Rai household.
### “Aamir Khan in a drag act”
Mumbai: Aamir Khan dressed as a woman in the new commercial for Coca-Cola brings back memories of all our leading men who have dared to dress in drag. Khan himself had created quite a flutter - and I don’t mean just the false eyelashes - when in Ashutosh Gowariker’s Baazi in 1995 he had dressed in drag for a dance number. Khan had spoken about how difficult the whole process of getting into a woman’s garb had been but that was apparently not difficult enough to put him off the womanly disguise for good! In the new cola ad, Khan plays a woman with a coy confidence — a measure of his commitment and confidence to carry off any role unabashedly.

Delhi based designer Manav Gangwani has accused Bollywood designer Vikram Phadnis of duplicating his creation and using it to dress Priyanka Chopra for the film Mujhse Shaadi Karogi.
The outfit in question is the red and navy blue worn by Priyanka in the song Lal Dupatta. It was originally showcased in Gangwani's fall/winter 2003 bridalwear collection. Phadnis however claims that he's never met Gangwani nor has he ever seen his clothes.
Manav however has no intentions of dragging Sajid Nadiadwala, David Dhawan or Priyanka Chopra in this controversy.

* I'm a little shy for pelvic thrusts: Shah Rukh Khan
Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, who finds subtle things more sensuous than in-your-face sexuality, says he felt embarrassed doing pelvic gyrations as an item boy in "Kaal".
But the actor, who has played hero, anti-hero, supporting hero and now item boy, says he bent his own rules, thanks to close friend and co-producer Karan Johar.
"Why do my friends keep embarrassing me? I feel shy being talked about as a stud. In 'Kaal', Karan couldn't get a proper stud, so they made do with whatever they got," Shah Rukh tells in an interview while laughing at his own dance sequences.
"I'm a little shy about doing such stuff. I must tell you, I still find some of our dance movements a little strange.
"I don't think thrusting your pelvis in the camera is very sensuous. At least for me, it doesn't send off the right kind of signals. Sometimes I laugh through the movements. That's the only way to make them believable."
In "Kaal", Bollywood's King Khan will be seen alongside Malaika Arora in Salim-Sulaiman's erotic "Kaal kaal mein hum tum kare dhamaal".
"I've taken my shirt off before, even in 'Swades'. But that was in a different context. Actually, I've never before done an 'item song'.
His earlier song with Malaika, "Chaiyyan chaiyyan" in "Dil Se" atop a moving train had created waves on the music charts. So is Shah Rukh conservative about his dancing?
"Yes, a bit. I find subtle things more sensuous than the in-your-face aggressive sexuality.
"I think 'Suraj hua maddham' in 'Kabhi Khushi...' and 'Tumhe jo maine dekha' in 'Main Hoon Na' are very sensual. As for being the 'item boy' in 'Kaal', I did it because Karan asked me to. I can't say no to a friend."
As for Karan's almost 'fatherly' dependence on Shah Rukh: "I think they all take my age too seriously," he laughs.
"Both Farah (Khan) and Karan think of me as a father figure. It isn't my wisdom. Just my clear-headedness about the things I do and say. I've had a fairly long experience in life, most of it wonderful.
"They get bored with my advice, but finally listen to what I've to say because many times I've proven right in my instincts. Yes, they do give me a lot of respect."
As of now, it is the 'Khan-Chopra-Johar' group that seems to be dominating the industry. "I think we're close because we don't step on each other's toes. And we all want the very best for all of us. We share a great equation," he reveals.
"Our personal equations don't clash with the professional. If I'm not in a film by Yash Chopra I'm still there to help in every way possible. The same is true of them.
"The other day the screw of my camera-magazine broke. I just called up Adi (Aditya Chopra) and he sent me, not one but two magazines. There's a lot of love and trust among us.
"If the Chopras are making 'Dhoom 2', I wish it well. If I'm stressed I call up Karan or Adi and they reassure me that all's well. The power comes, not from the fact that we've collaborated over a number of successful films, but from our genuine comfort level.
"I'm more concerned about 'Dhoom 2' doing well than maybe even my own 'Paheli'," he says calling the trio his virtual family.
"When the awards functions were on, I genuinely wish Yash Chopra should've got the award for 'Veer-Zara'. The Chopras, Johars and I are really wonderful friends.
"We'd have been as close even if we weren't making films."

An offended Vivek said: "From now on I'll insist that my interviews be used in totality. All I'll say is my intentions towards Aishwarya Rai are honourable, and so is my attitude to the press."
"I believe the press needs to draw a line between news-worthiness and conscientious reporting. Surely we can't have half-truths and distortions passing off as fact especially in an interview conducted by a serious political journalist."
"I don't wish to say anything more."
Apparently the interview, recorded when Vivek went to Delhi last week to attend an event organised by TV Today at which his tsunami relief project was granted around Rs 8 million rupees, and its focus on his relationship with Aishwarya has caused immense distress in the Rai household.
Aishwarya prefers to keep her private life out of the public glare. Such discussions on matters close to her heart are deeply distasteful to her.
Vivek has now decided to be extremely cautious in his public utterances and will take no questions on Aishwarya in interviews.
As for the supposed marriage, the couple's friend said there would be no wedding bells for Aishwarya and Vivek for quite some time.

* KYUN, AB HOGA NA?
SANJAY CHUGH
Vivek was on air again. This time proclaiming shaadi with
girlfriend Ash. But when Delhi Times contacted him, he said
there were no immediate wedding plans. Forget the ifs and
buts. Here the picture-perfect wedding and its future...
Ido, he says during the interview that was telecast yesterday.
Whether or not the lady reciprocates, Vivek Oberoi has
announced on a TV news channel: Yes, I will marry Aishwarya
Rai. In the same interview, he elaborates further. She is
my girlfriend. Aishwarya has been very lucky for me. There is
a stability that comes in one life with the right girl. She
should understand you, understand your career, understand
films... girls from a non-film background can find the going
tough.
The actor also makes mention of another high-profile Bollywood
couple to prove his point. There are some special
relationships right now like Ash and me, Kareena and Shahid.
People had said that we wouldn’t last when it first came to
light but it has been 2.5 years now.
Immediately after the news was flashed by the channel, Vivek
spoke with Delhi Times. My intentions are honourable but
there are no impending plans of marriage. The whole interview
has been blown out of proportion, he says. Has he been
quoted out of context? That is for people to decide. I don’t
want to say anything further on this matter.
Was this take III after Vivek alleged attempts to hog the
limelight via media outburts. Remember the tirade against
Salman Khan and his 40-plus phone calls at a press conference
in 2003 and, more recently, his relief work for tsunami
victims which Tamil Nadu CM Jayalalithaa has found fault with?
That remains in the realms of speculation for now. While Ash
Couldn’t be contacted for comment, if she does marry Vivek,
the wedding will be the fairytale-ending stuff with which
erstwhile Bollywood knots have been tied. Of course, going by
Ash career moves too, it seems Hollywood hunting is
currently top priority for the Bollywood diva. Shaadi does
seem secondary. But then again, love ke liye kuch bi karega
na?
MADE FOR EACH OTHER?
Bollywood verdict on Ash-Vivek as a married couple
# Mahesh Bhatt: They are good-looking going by societal
standards. On that basis alone, they look good together!
## Anupam Kher: They look good together. When two people are
happy, it makes them look good as a couple, but beyond that,
it none of my business.
### Satish Kaushik: If they love each other, they’ll be good
together. Ash is a happy person. I’ve never worked with Vivek,
but I’m sure he’s a nice person. They make for a nice
couple.
#### Ken Ghosh: I’ve met them once or twice at parties and they
came across as any other young couple out on a date. They’re
like any other couple hanging out together and spending time
with each other.
##### Taran Adarsh: I saw them at Subhash Ghai’s party and they
looked in love. They are a normal couple except for the media
spotlight on them.
###### Industrywallas reveal that Vivek is possessive about Ash and
once reprimanded a lensman who tried to click them together.
Ash has only acknowledged Vivek as a good friend: someone
Who’s been there for me in good and bad times.
^ ASH-VIVEK
“ Aishwarya is a confirmed introvert based on her reluctance to
talk about her relationships, be it with Vivek or Salman.
Vivek is a confirmed extrovert. In cases like this, there is a
chance that the extrovert becomes a buffer for the introvert.
The needs of externalisation are taken care of by the person
who is more vocal in the relationship. But the extrovert,
after some time, might feel bored. Extroverts look for
interaction and new thrills all the time. Also, the introvert
might find the extrovert boorish or to be stepping on her
toes. Ash has a high level of persistence; she has the ability
to see things through even when the going gets tough. In this
respect, Vivek scores low” after Jayalalitha levelled charges
against him, he backed out. Ash also has a high level of
self-direction; she is sure of what she wants. In a
relationship with Vivek, Ash would have the upper hand”.
^ ASH-SALMAN
This was a passive-aggressive relationship with Ash being the
passive participant. The term aggressive need not imply just
physical aggression but verbal and social aggression too. In
such a scenario, the passive person puts up with irrational
behaviour. The aggressive person expects the passive one to
continue while the passive one might choose not to do so. This
leads to the relationship breaking up. Besides, Salman is the
type that seeks novelty; he will constantly seek something
new. Ash would be more compatible with Vivek than Salman.

* Big B - Mallika together?
By Taran Adarsh, May 03rd 2005 - 0930 hrs IST
S. Raamanathan, one of the most respected names in the industry and who has a number of biggies to his credit [MAHAAN, GERAFTAAR, GANGAA JAMUNAA SARASWATHI], is ready with his latest film ZAMAANAT, with Big B, Karisma Kapoor and Arshad Warsi enacting pivotal roles.
With ZAMAANAT slated for release in June this year, Raamanathan is geared up to start another film before the former is released. "Mallika had heard of the subject that I was planning to make and expressed a keen desire to be a part of the film. I narrated the subject to her in detail and she signed the film instantly," the veteran states.
For a significant role in the film, Raamanathan is in negotiations with the Big B. "The role suits Mr. Bachchan perfectly and I am talking to him at the moment," the senior film-maker divulges. If Big B agrees to be a part of the project, it would make an interesting set-up for sure.
Meanwhile, Raamanathan has made some exciting promos of ZAMAANAT, which were screened for the Mumbai media on Monday night [May 2]. ZAMAANAT brings together Big B and Vijayashanti for the first time, as well as Karisma and Arshad, who have never been cast earlier.
* Samar Khan to direct making of 'Paheli'
By IndiaFM News Bureau, May 02nd 2005 - 1730 hrs IST
After his directorial debut Kuch Meetha Ho Jaye Samar Khan is busy directing the making of Amol Palekar and SRK's much-awaited 'Paheli'. "It's a 1 ½ hour documentary, which will capture all the nuances of the making of Paheli," says Samar. We probe him for further information "Well, this is not the first time that I am doing this I have done this earlier for Shahrukh's Asoka. Wen I heard about Paheli an idea struck me and I shared it with Shahrukh who gave me a go ahead," he says.
When are they planning to release this documentary? "That's Shahrukh's discretion, I will just make the film and give it to him," explains Samar. Finally is this a quid pro quo for the cameo SRK did in Kuch Meetha Ho Jaye. Not at all I can repay what he has done for me," says Samar gratefully.

* Ajay-Vivek turn into ghosts!
It's not only the bad guys who have all the fun. Good guys are
just as hell-bent on enjoying themselves. Especially Ajay
Devgan and Vivek Oberoi. The duo makes an awesome team when it
comes to ragging or playing pranks. Like Vivek relates: "We
singled out one guy on the sets for our joke and I began
making calls to him, whispering and making strange sounds over
the phone. I knew Ajay was coming there in three days, so I
was setting up the situation. When Ajay arrived, I told him
about the prank and that now his touch was required. The next
thing we know, when the guy went to his room, there were
strange things written with blood in Urdu all over his mirror.
The words said, 'I am coming for you.' The blood was obviously
fake. And he started panicking. Then we took a photograph of
the guy and we distorted it, and told him there was a strange
presence behind him, even in the photograph. Finally he went
up to the director and told him that he couldn't stay there
any more! Only then did we stop." Now that's one relentless,
ruthless team, we must say!

* Salman says no to Nikhil
If buzz is to be believed, Salman Khan has turned down Nikhil Advani's project to be based on Boney Kapoor's Hum Paanch made years ago. Before embarking on his new film Nikhil Advani planned to remake thriller Rebecca. Sadly, the idea was latched onto by another producer and Nikhil was compelled to call off the project. Now with Salman Khan saying no to Nikhil, one wonders whom will the director approach for this venture. Nikhil Advani who shot to fame with Kal Ho Na Ho turned independent director and producer much to the chagrin of producer Karan Johar.
* Priyanka bags Don
Actress Priyanka Chopra will play Shahrukh Khan's lady love in Farhan Akhtar's Don. It is a known fact that Farhan Akhtar will remake the 70s film Don starring Amitabh Bachchan and Zeenat Aman, the script of which was penned by Farhan's father Javed Akhtar. Of course, Farhan will make the film more contemporary. But like Amitabh, Shahrukh Khan too will play double role in the film. This is for the first time that Shahrukh Khan and Priyanka Chopra have been paired together. The duo had first came together for SRK's Tempatation 2004 show held in the UK and USA. Priyanka has managed to bag the best of films including Rakesh Roshan's Krrish with Hrithik Roshan and PNC's remake of Saheb Biwi Aur Ghulam with Salman Khan to be directed by Deepa Mehta.
* Dhoom 2: Out of step?
Has choreographer Shamiak Davar rejected Dhoom 2? Director Sanjay Ghadvi who shot to fame with Dhoom seems to be facing a problem where the sequel of the film is concerned. Reportedly, he had approached choreographer Shamiak Davar to choreograph numbers for his film. Shamiak had choreographed for Subhash Ghai's Taal. When asked, Davar said that he had not declined the film completely. "I have yet not decided anything," he said. Davar has choreographed two numbers in Bunty Aur Babli with Abhishek Bachchan and Rani Mukherjee. "Despite their busy schedules both stars squeezed out time to rehearse for the number," he said.

* SRK, Rani & a Baywatch star!
India's movie industry handed out its version of the Oscars on Saturday at the Bollywood Movie Awards, which saw a veteran director take top honors and a US actor best known for Baywatch named international star of the year.
Dancers in shimmering costumes, Indian beauties in saris and sultry heartthrobs sporting long black coats crowded the Taj Mahal for the occasion.
The Taj Mahal casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey, that is. The event was held in the US East Coast gambling resort as part of Bollywood's bid to be a global force in cinema.
It was a fitting backdrop for a show that mixed the glitz of a major movie industry with the retro feel of variety-show dance numbers, the likes of which were long ago excised from the Oscars.
An audience composed largely of Americans of Indian origin cheered as veteran Yash Chopra was named best director for his film Veer-Zaara, which also picked up the award for best film and best actor for its star Shahrukh Khan.
Rani Mukherjee, one of the few major divas to take the stage, won the best actress award for her role in Hum Tum.
"The winner is the "Spielberg" of India ... Yash Chopra," said former Baywatch star David Hasselhoff as he presented the award for best film, referring to star US director Steven Spielberg.
Bollywood has a reputation for colorful kitsch - melodramatic plots, young lovers battling cruel fate, wicked villains and sentimental, but chaste, song-and-dance routines.
"Whether it's comedy or romance or action, films should touch your heart," Chopra said, explaining the appeal of his films and the genre, which despite efforts to expand its audience has so far made few inroads into the US market.
Though an array of stars including former Miss India Lara Dutta entertained the crowd, Hasselhoff provoked some of the night's biggest cheers when he picked up his statuette.
The Bollywood awards, which resemble a slim-line Oscar holding what could be a torch or a bunch of flowers, are chosen according to a popular vote by fans.
Baywatch and Knight Rider, where Hasselhoff co-starred with a car named Kit, may raise sniggers from highbrow critics at home but they are still going strong in India, and the actor said he had much in common with the escapism of Bollywood.
"I'm proud of shows like Baywatch and Knight Rider because it's about saving lives, not taking lives," he said.
"It's entertainment, it's tongue in cheek, it brings the world together," he said, adding that the entertainment industry was a powerful force for good in the world.
"I think it's responsible for a lot of world peace," Hasselhoff said, adding that he was hoping to work in India soon on a project based on a series of romantic novels.
"I never knew exactly how to get there. Now I've got this (award) it's like my key to India," he said.
Bollywood churns out around 1,000 movies a year. But despite a fan base that extends to the Middle East and Europe, few films make money.
But Shammi Kapoor, who was given a lifetime achievement award, said better technology and funding were leading to more and more better films. "They're getting to be more topical," he added. "They aren't the happy happy movies of yesteryear."
Bollywood still has comic heroes and dastardly villains, however, and the awards paid tribute to both. Aftab Shivdasani turned up to claim his prize for best comedian, but the villain of the year, Abhishek Bachchan, was nowhere to be seen.

* Heros who became women!
Aamir Khan dressed as a woman in the new commercial for Coca-Cola brings back memories of all our leading men who have dared to dress in drag.
Khan himself had created quite a flutter - and I don't mean just the false eyelashes - when in Ashutosh Gowariker's "Baazi" in 1995 he had dressed in drag for a dance number.
Khan had spoken about how difficult the whole process of getting into a woman's garb had been but that was apparently not difficult enough to put him off the womanly disguise for good! In the new cola ad, Khan plays a woman with a coy confidence - a measure of his commitment and confidence to carry off any role unabashedly.
Close on his heels comes Ashutosh Rana as the true-life eunuch politician Shabnam. This isn't the first time that Rana is getting into drag. In Tanuja Chandra's "Sangharsh", which catapulted him to heinous fame, Rana had dressed up as a woman to outwit the law.
"But in 'Shabnam Mousi' there's no charade on screen. It's a full-fledged character in feminine garb and I truly enjoyed playing this character," explained the committed actor.
For Bollywood's early male super-heroes, playing a woman even in jest was just not a possibility.
One couldn't imagine the screen legends of the golden era like Dilip Kumar, Raj Kapoor or Dev Anand, though female superstars like Padmini in "Mera Naam Joker" and Saira Banu in "Victoria 203" had no qualms about masquerading as men.
The first leading man to get into drag was the 1960s' pin up boy Biswajeet. In Manmohan Desai's espionage thriller "Kismat", he disguised himself as a woman to sing "Kajra mohabbat wala" in Asha Bhosle's voice. His co-star Babita masqueraded as a man and sang in Shamshad Begum's voice.
It was a first - and certainly not a last. In Narendra Bedi's 1975 comedy "Raffoo Chakkar" - a remake of Billy Wilder's "Some Like It Hot" - Rishi Kapoor and Paintal were fabulous in drag.
In 1981, the reigning superstar Amitabh Bcahchan created a stir when in Prakash Mehra's "Lawaris" he got into drag to enact the popular "Mere angein mein" number.
Critics lashed out at him for his allegedly unbecoming conduct. But as he patiently pointed out, a complete entertainer was one who didn't flinch under the most excruciating circumstances.
The mighty Kamal Haasan realized the truth behind Bachchan's truism when in the celebrated "Chachi 420" he disguised himself as a woman to play nanny to his own daughter.
Kamal Haasan's drag act, inspired by Robin Williams in "Mrs Doubtfire", is the most outstanding example of an Indian actor playing a woman. The actor didn't merely play a woman. He got into the skin of his character to actually create a believable woman.
The voice wasn't dubbed and the gait wasn't exaggerated. Every nuance and gesture was just right. Every flutter of the eyelash and the heaving of the bosom denoted a woman's poise rather than a man impersonating a woman.
Govinda too tried to do a "Mrs Doubtfire" in "Aunty No 1" with disastrous results. In Amol Palekar's little-seen "Daayra", Nirmal Pandey and Sonali Kulkarni played two cross-dressers whose destinies cross and uncross in a gender-bending crisscross.
Pandey's performance, though convincing, never got beyond the art-house circuit.
Way back in 1913, when Indian cinema started, Dadasahib Phalke had to cast men in women's roles because of social taboos which forbade the female gender from facing the camera.
Today, when sexual options are far more liberally exercised, it takes an Aamir Khan or a Kamal Haasan to enter the comfort zone of challenging histrionics though the dark areas of emotional and sexual expression.

* Vivek denies any differences
Bollywood star Vivek Oberoi, who had gone to southern India for charity work after the tsunami disaster, has denied that he ever had any confrontation with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalitha.
''Amma had granted us land to build an orphanage. Why would she help me if she had a problem with me,'' he asked in an interview with the channel Aajtak to be telecast tomorrow.
The comment came following an observation made by Ms Jayalalitha that Vivek had done the tsumani relief work only as a 'publicity stunt'.
He denied that he had done anything for publicity and the media had come to cover his work for tsunami victims on their own. ''I did not call anyone.'' ''I do not believe in people doing social work only after retirement. I took three and half months break to work with people.
It is only now that people have noticed it. I have been doing this for the last five years.'' Asked about rivalry among stars, Vivek said ''I have competition only with myself. I do not compete with anyone.''

We did a 'news-break' on Karan Johar's new project, starring Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Abhishek Bachchan, Preity Zinta and Rani Mukerji in lead roles, way back in December 2004. And as we all know by now, the biggie, titled KABHI ALVIDA NA KEHNA, is expected to roll this year.
But a few ill-informed sources reported a few days ago that Karan's film will be shot in Australia entirely. The news, expectedly, is completely untrue.
"I am still undecided about the locations for my new film. But it's definitely not Australia… Strange, some people know more about my film than I do," Karan informs me. Incidentally, the film will roll in September, instead of June/July this year.

* Interview: “Urmila Matondkar”
“URMILA WITH RAMU AGAIN, SURPRISES ALL”
By Eye TV India Bureau
Star Chat
Rangeela girl Urmila Matondkar has returned to her favorite director Ram Gopal Verma with whom she began her career and worked in his 'Rangeela', 'Satya', 'Koun', 'Drohi', Daud', 'Jungle' 'Mast' and 'Bhoot'. This has surprised all in the industry. How it happened is a moot question? She had distanced herself from the Ramu camp after Ramu preferred Antara Mali to her in his new ventures. The critics thought that this would end her filmi career. However, she has proved them wrong by working successfully with other directors. She acted in director-producer Dr Chandra Prakash Dwivedi's 'Pinjar' and earned praise for her performance in it. Now, she is banking on her forthcoming 'Naina' of I Dreams, being directed by Shripal Morakhia. We met Urmila Matondkar in Delhi during her tour for promoting 'Naina'.
Excerpts of her chat:
Q. Why did you quit the Ramu camp?
A. After the entry of Antara Mali in Ramu's films, a wrong impression gained ground that I have left Ramu altogether. However, it was wrong. I discussed with Ramu many films but I declined to act in those movies, as I didn't like their scripts. I liked one script and instantaneously accepted to work in it.
Q. When are you planning to shoot it?
A. The shooting was scheduled in January last. But it was deferred because of some unavoidable reasons. The next dates would be finalized soon.
Q. Since you had opted out of Ramu's movies, it was said that other directors might not welcome you in their films. Your comment, please?
A. I have proved them wrong. I have acted in films directed by others too. I have tried to establish myself as an actor rather than as a star.
Q. What's your next movie?
A. I am anxiously awaiting the release of my next 'Naina'.

* 'Priyanka and I are great pair'
Akshay Kumar is jubilant after the success, both in India and abroad, of his latest release "Waqt", more so because it is the first film he has distributed.
"Yes 'Waqt' is doing well in most places. Its collections overseas have especially surprised everyone. It's in the Top 10 films in the UK along with the new Hollywood blockbusters like 'XXX2' and 'The Pacifier'.
"We all knew the film would work. But it has really connected with ovserseas Indians. I guess the family values makes them nostalgic."
Akshay disagreed with trade analysts that the success of "Waqt" had made him a superstar overseas.
"Many of my films have been big successes overseas. Just last year 'Mujhse Shaadi Karogi' cracked the charts in the UK and US in a big way. So to say this is my first overseas blockbusters is wrong. Yes, 'Waqt' is the first film that I've marketed in Mumbai myself. Its success means a lot to me."
Taking a break from his hectic schedule, Akshay is currently holidaying with his wife and son in Mauritius.
"I was shooting for Priyadarshan's 'Garam Masala'. And now we're just chilling out. I think I've earned myself a holiday. My son Aarav loves water sports. So Mauritius is like Disneyland for him."
He was excited about doing another comedy with Priyadarshan after "Hera Pheri".
"It was great fun. The film was an out-and-out comedy. But my next release 'Mere Jeevan Saathi' features me in a serious role. Funny, but I've done two films where the titles are the same as my father-in-law's (Rajesh Khanna) movies 'Ajnabee' and now 'Mere Jeevan Saathi'," he said.
Asked why he got into distribution, Akshay said: "Waqt is the first film I'm distributing... in Mumbai only... and for now, the only film I'm distributing. This showed my faith in Vipul Shah's product.
"I've never done a film that has affected me so much. Five years ago while I was shooting for 'Jaanwar' my father was dying. I played a father in the movie and I cried throughout the filming. "In 'Waqt', I play the son while Amitji plays my father. Again I felt I was re-living the emotions connected with my dad. Both Amitji and I constantly kept going into our own relationships, he with Abhishek and I with my father. That's why the emotions you see in the film look so real."
Akshay said he had laid down only one condition before deciding to distribute "Waqt".
"I told my director that the film should be dedicated to my father. It was my only pre-condition and my only reason to go into the business side of films even though I had vowed I would keep away from it."
"(My mother) was overwhelmed when she saw it. I hope I can always live up to her expectations. And to the audiences expectations... My ambition isn't to have 10 hits in a row.
"As an actor I just enjoy acting. Success is neither in my hands, not that it is important to me. In Bollywood I feel the competition is very stiff... especially among women," he chuckled.
"Waqt is very close to my heart. It took a lot from me as an actor. And the line dividing the character from the actor almost disappeared. In real life, I wasn't the spoilt brat I play in the film.
"Waqt drained me completely. This is my most challenging role so far. And more so since I'm with Bachchan again. Hard to believe we've done five films together. I don't think even Shashi Kapoor (who was Bachchan's steady male co-star in the 1970s) had the pleasure of doing so many films with Bachchan.
"Every day I learnt something new from him. He manages to turn every scene into something special. I don't even try to act before him. I just try to be part of the magic he creates."
On the much talked-about pairing with Priyanka Chopra, he said: "We've already given three hits together. 'Waqt' is our fourth success together. We're a very successful and appealing pairing. Our success ratio is amazing. We share a great on-screen chemistry. And we've been lucky for each other."
"Waqt" is Akshay's second film with director Vipul Shah and is based on a Gujarati play.
"I'm surrounded by Gujaratis. My wife and her family are Gujjus. And some of my favourite directors are also Gujjus."

* Urmila Matondkar: Potpourri
“NIKITA DOVAL”
She’s played everything from temptress to goofy girl in reel
life, and muse to pin-up girl in reality. Now, close to a year
after her last movie and a few weeks before her next release,
Urmila Matondkar meets NIKITA DOVAL without grease paint and
labels
# THE NOBODY WHO MADE IT BIG:
Both my father and grandfather were interested in acting but
never really thought of it as a profession. I was quite happy
doing plays at school when someone recommended me to Shriram
Lagoo, who signed me on for a Marathi film. Sixteen other
girls made their debut in movies the year I did, all of them
were either somebody’s daughter, niece or grand-daughter... I
was a nobody. As a kid, I did just 4-5 films, including
Masoom, so I’m not really a child artiste who made it big.
## ME, THODA HAT KE:
Studies or Bollywood, I’ve always taken the unconventional
path. After my stint as a child artiste, I returned to my
books and scored 84% in the class X exams. When I pursued arts
in college, the reaction was: “only losers take up arts”. But
I stuck to my decision since I was interested in literature,
history and psychology. After Rangeela, I took up Satya, Kaun,
Judai, which required me to play different roles. People said
I was repeating myself in Daud but I found the role to be
different.
### DANCING? WILL TRY:
N Chandra was shooting with another actress for Narsimha when
she tore a ligament. He called me up and asked if I could
dance. I said, ˜No, but I think I can manage”. The next day,
there I was with big stars like Dimple Kapadia, Sunny Deol and
600 extras trying to shake a leg. Dancing combines emotions,
action and drama and it’s not possible for everyone to live
upto expectations.
#### NO REGRETS... EVER:
I don’t regret my initial choice of films. When I started out,
I was too caught up with all the changes happening around me.
Here I was, a middle-class girl whose mother had probably
never stocked cosmetics at home, thrust into the glam world of
movie-making. I’ve grown as a person and an actress which
makes me feel blessed because people out there haven’t
experienced what I have.
##### AND THEN CAME RANGEELA:
This film was a turning point not just for me, but other
actresses too since they suddenly realised they had to be
slim. Rangeela came at the right time for my career. With it,
everything fell in place... post-Rangeela, all my movies were
re-released with my photo in the foreground and the big stars
in the background. I doubt if one film has changed anyone’s
career so much. But I also believe that life is not about one
Rangeela” success must be sustained over a prolonged
duration.
###### INSECURITY... WHAT’S THAT?
Cinema is a creative field governed by insecurity. But I can
say that box-office pressures don’t bog me down. This is a
male-dominated industry and the men can do the kind of cinema
they want to since they have people willing to invest money in
them. Actresses, on the other hand, rarely take chances...
having done so, I feel good about the risks I’ve taken.
####### GREAT EXPECTATIONS:
People feel that I’ve taken a break but I did have a film
release (Ek Haseena Thi) in 2004 and now I’m back with another
movie. If there has been a gap, it’s because there are
expectations and I don’t want my audience to feel let down by
doing just any film. After Bhoot, I was offered 5-6 scripts
along similar lines but I turned down all of them since I
don’t want to repeat myself.
######## MERA ATTITUDE BHI SEXY:
“People don’t really comprehend the meaning of the ˜sex
symbol tag ” it’s not about skimpy clothes but about
personality; you either have that something special or you
don’t. The ability to keep viewers glued to their seats, not
because of your short skirts but your acting ability, is what
sex appeal stands for. For me, it’s there in Rangeela, Kaun
and Pinjar. No actress can never make it big purely on sensual
appeal.”
######### RAMU AND I:
Ram Gopal Varma is one of the biggest filmmakers in the
country and anyone who has
worked with him will agree with this view. I have a couple of
projects with him and the scripts are in the process of being
finalised.
########## MILES TO GO:
I didn’t know where I was headed when I started out and I
Don’t know where I will reach in future. All I know is that I
love movies and when I’m not involved with them, I read or
travel. I want to explore the world and give everything my
best shot.
########### ARROGANT? NO. SHY? YES!
“I never went around studio offices with my photos, asking for
work ” that’s not because I’m arrogant but because I’m shy.
I’m an introvert, I’ve always been passionate about reading. I
Don’t bother about what people say about me as I’ve never
intended to be important for other people. I continue to be a
simple girl. After all, I’m my own person first and then an
actress... I have to be true to myself.

* No breakup with Ness: Preity
Having already spent a month in Melbourne, Bollywood star Preity Zinta says she is missing her mother and Mumbai city.
"I'm going to be shooting here for so long I think I should just settle down in Australia!" chuckles Preity, who has been in Melbourne shooting for Yashraj production "Salaam Namaste" with Saif Ali Khan for over a month.
"I'm homesick. I miss mom and Mumbai... in that order. According to my horoscope, I'm destined to be globe-trotting for most of this year just like it happened last year," she tells on phone from Melbourne.
After Melbourne, Preity moves to Sydney for a Karan Johar film.
"So it's Australia all the way. I don't think I'll be back in India until October," she says.
"But you know what's the saddest part of being away from Mumbai for so long? People get a chance to spread rumours. The latest about me is that I have split with Ness Wadia. I wish I could give people reason to gossip about me."
Preity is, however, gung-ho about her new film.
"Fortunately 'Salaam Namaste' is shaping up so well... Director Siddharth knows his job. Whether it was Farhan Akhtar in 'Dil Chahta Hai' or Honey Irani in 'Armaan', I always enjoy working with new directors.
"They are so open to ideas, learning on the job so to speak. When I was shooting with Yash (Chopra) uncle for 'Veer-Zara', I just put my feet up and let him guide me through the film. Making a film is far more interactive with a newcomer like Siddharth."
Recalling how she signed the film, Preity says: "I still remember Siddharth came to me in Goa to read the script of 'Salaam Namaste'. He thought I'd say no because I've the reputation for being choosy. But one has to be careful. One wrong move and you're gone!"

* No rift with Sunidhi Chauhan: Adnan Sami
“Adnan Sami has denied he has any differences with singer Sunidhi Chauhan”.
"There's absolutely no difference between us," insisted Sami. His comments followed reports that Sunidhi, who is performing alongside him in the US and Canada, had returned to Mumbai leaving him high and dry.
"High and dry?? Hello!! Now, where did that come from?" Adnan asks.
"The fact is Sunidhi had returned to India, but for a few days for an urgent job. She joins me again at Calgary. Where's the question of any differences with her?
"She's a sweetheart, a truly noble soul. We're both Leos, our birthdays are separated by a day, and we get along famously," said Adnan in Los Angeles where he performed at the Shrine Auditorium Sunday.
After the Los Angeles tour, Adnan and Sunidhi will perform at Calgary, Washington, San Francisco and Detroit.
Adnan says he has never felt better about life.
"The concerts so far in Toronto, New York, Orlando, Houston, San Francisco and Los Angeles have been stupendous in terms of audience response," he said.
"I can't describe the experience. I kept remembering that the Shrine Auditorium was the stage on which Jack Nicholson, Walter Mathau and other Hollywood greats had walked by. By the end of the experience people were piggy riding each other and dancing in the aisles.
"When 15,000 people join you in a song and when a little girl in pleats and braces walks up shyly to you to say, 'I kinda like your Tera chehra number' all your efforts to get on stage in city after city for almost non-stop performances seems worth it. The minute I mention my songs from 'Lucky' the audience gets all revved up."
The Adnan Sami concerts were sold out well in advance. So after the unqualified success of Shah Rukh Khan's concerts earlier this year, is this the time for the revival of concerts by Bollywood icons overseas?
"Possibly. It does seem as though audiences keenly want to see what I've to offer on stage," opines Adnan.
So successful is Adnan's concert tour that he has been signed on for six additional performances in the US including two in Washington.
"And then we move to Britain for a second lap of concerts. I never thought I'd connect with audiences so effectively. It's a truly exhilarating experience," enthuses Adnan.

* SC notice to Johar's Kaal
Bollywood's latest venture "Kaal" has ruffled the features of animal activists and the apex court for alleged violation of animal rights.
The Supreme Court's notice to super star Shah Rukh Khan and filmmaker Karan Johar on a petition alleging that their co-produced film "Kaal" violates the Wildlife Protection Act among others is not the first time the Hindi-film industry has been accused of breaching animal rights.
Former central minister and environment activist Maneka Gandhi informed the court that the film was shot in the Corbett National Park in Uttaranchal without proper permission from the Chief Wildlife Warden as required under the Wildlife Act. Besides, wild animals were used in the film.
The allegation is that the film was shot in the national park in violation of the court's earlier orders not to use wild animals for commercial purposes.
Big-budget "Kaal" (or Doomsday) was publicized by debutant director Soham Shah as a pro-conservation film.
At the movie's premier Soham said: "Wildlife has always been neglected by Indian filmmakers, so I thought why not make a film on it. There are hardly any tigers left in India despite the fact that the tiger is our national animal."
The film, however, breaks all rules. The opening shot features actor John Abraham with a python, a clear violation. The film goes on to portray game hunting as common and rampant. The film also to an extent allegedly reinforces the myth that tigers hunt humans.
Activists say cruelty to animals in movies is rampant and unchecked. Led by Maneka Gandhi, these activists are fighting a system, which they say, is turning a blind eye to the issue that can spillover and increase violence on these voiceless beings in real life as well.
Gandhi has been vociferous in her tirade against the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) on this issue. She has been advocating that animal rights activists should be part of the Censor Board as was the case in 1998.
According to the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act and Performing Animals Rules it is mandatory for anyone using an animal for the purpose of entertainment - to which admission is charged - to apply to the government for permission, stating exactly what the animal will be required to do.
A copy of the permission certificate has to be submitted to the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI). Even if permission to use animals in films is granted, it is still punishable to inflict any manner of pain or suffering on them. One also has to pay for an inspector to be present whenever an animal is used to ensure no cruelty is done.
"None of Bollywood's 14 listed animal suppliers have registered themselves with the AWBI. This registration is compulsory under the Performing Animals Act. We have written to all of them that they are on the wrong end of the law," says activist Anuradha Sawhney.
"If you make a movie telling that it is cool to hate and kill lizards, then you are actually influencing a whole generation to do the same," she says.
A horse was seriously injured during the shooting of "Bhola Bhala" after being deliberately tripped. The dog Jaani of "Parivaar" was killed after a glass-breaking stunt in a movie, says Sawhney.
She added that several TV advertisements, including the BPL ad with elephants and the Pepsi ad featuring Preity Zinta and a monkey have been withdrawn. In 1994, an NGO convinced the CBFC to censor certain parts of the film "Betaaj Badshah" in which the mouth of a leopard had been sewn up.
She said the rules do not in any way come in the way of artistic licence. "Would you murder or rape people to depict life in films? So why do you have to be cruel and insensitive to animals in the name of artistic licence?" she asked.
Bollywood however, does not seem to be listening.
Salman Khan is fighting a court case for allegedly hunting endangered black bucks. Aamir Khan also faced flak for violating animal rights for his first production "Lagaan". Interestingly, Shah Rukh is the last of Bollywood's three Khans to face allegations of animal rights violation.
