We shot one song in Ladakh, because the lyric of Gulzar saab talks about such a land," said Abhik. What about Abhishek? "Abhishek has a good frontal profile." However, Abhik wants to shoot with Shah Rukh, whose left profile is stronger according to him. "I would want to shoot a backlit or a silhouetted Shah Rukh."
* Koena swaps Priyanka's man!
by Debasis Jana
Koena has arrived! She's been saying that herself, ever since, 'Musafir'. And this is a statement that her secretary would now like to make, especially if Priyanka Chopra would lend him an ear. Because Koena's secretary is none other than the controversial Prakash Jaju, who had gone public about Priyanka's 'two-timing', after both had a spat. But still, all he did was to make Priyanka a much bigger star than she was. So Koena just can't stop smiling. She knows she's on her way to stardom, no sweat, even if it's on the Pri path. She has bagged some good films already. Whether Jaju's jadoo will wok we are yet to see. But does anyone know what happened to Koena's secy, he's also crossed over and, guess what, he's joined Pri Chops instead! Now this swapping is really cool! It only means more gossip, more masala.

* ART, COMMERCIAL CINEMA LINE THINNING
By Eye TV India Bureau
In the News
The difference between a commercial and an offbeat moving is thinning these days. Even the filmmakers and the directors have reached this conclusion. During the last for four months of the current year- 2005- has witnessed it. The films during this period have proved it beyond any doubt. The viewers have widely appreciated even the offbeat films, and that's why they have been successful at the box office. Ordinarily, commercial movies were supposed to entertain the viewers and earn good money for the producers, while offbeat were targeted by the makers to get awards and a place in film festivals, inside and outside India.
However, this line of demarcation between a commercial and an offbeat movie has thinned down. This year's movies have blasted the myth of any major difference between the two categories of movies. It hardly matters if the movie like 'Black' brings out the relationship between a deaf and dumb girl and her teacher or 'Page 3' or ' Nikhil, My Brother' trying to throw light on the dark side of socialites. Another example is 'Shabd'. The movie describes how a writer forces his wife to into a relationship with a much younger boy.
Similarly, Vinod Pandey's 'Sins' and Vinta Nanda's 'White Noise' have attracted wide acclaim from the viewers despite their different storylines and presentations. On the other hand, offbeat movies like 'Sheesha', 'Chahat--Ek Nasha', 'Fun Can Be Dangerous Sometime' and 'Bewafa' have fallen flat despite lot of masala in them. According to industry bigwigs, even the directors and the producers like Pritish Nandy in case of 'Shabd' and Sanjay Leela Bhansali for 'Black' have realized the fact that the art cannot be bound or confined.

* SHAH RUKH-RANI PAIR IN PALEKAR'S 'PAHELI'
By Aira
Music Launch
A much-awaited film this summer is Amol Palekar's 'Paheli', being produced by Shah Rukh Khan's Red Chillies Entertainment. The film is based on a story 'Duvidha' by literary stalwart Vijay Dan Detha. The film was shot in Mumbai and Rajasthan within 43 days. We took a look at the film, heard its music and met up with the crew. The suspense is partly over.
Noted actor and director Amol Palekar's much-awaited and star-studded film, 'Paheli', featuring 'King' Khan, 'Queen' Rani and the Big B is ready. And a colourful event in Mumbai marked the music launch of the film. Based on a story from Rajasthan folklore, the film will have Shah Rukh Khan essaying the role of a ghost who falls in love with a married woman, played by Rani Mukherjee.
My character is that of a normal ghost. He is not the one who would scare anyone. And since I have been doing romantic films for the last 15 years, the ghost that I get to play is also romantic. And yes the look is all Rajashthani --- therefore the pagdi in the posters and the moustache," says Shah Rukh Khan.
Seems like Rani is really ruling the roost in Bollywood. And the Shah Rukh-Rani pair is certainly liked by the audiences. "I love working with Shah Rukh. And 'Paheli' is a different film, with Amol Palekar directing the film; it makes it even more special. I love the music of the film as it has a lot of folk input from Rajasthan and extremely colourful." Apart from these two, the film also boasts of the largest star cast in recent times. It also features talented Marathi actors like Neena Kulkarni, Dilip Prabhavalkar and Nikhil Ratnaparkhi. Amitabh Bachchan, Rajpal Yadav, Juhi Chawla and Suniel Shetty have made special appearances.
"The story needed a lot of characters and each one was not the lead. But to get actors like Amitabh Bachchan, Juhi or even Neena, Nikhil for these vital characters was important. They have made the film look just so much better. And the characters just so right, " says director, Amol Palekar.
'Paheli' promises to be a rather colourful film - both in terms of its sound and look. The sounds of traditional instruments of Rajasthan like the ravanhatta and alguja, can be heard in the compositions of M M Kreem. Classical singers like Bela Shende, Shruti Sadolikar and Kalapini Komakali, the granddaughter of the legendary Kumar Gandharva, share the platform with Sonu Nigam and Shreya Ghoshal. "It was certainly a welcome change to sing songs with different instruments which are not usually used.
And also with the classical singers, who are just too good, says Sonu Nigam. The 20-year-old Shreya Ghoshal is MM Kreem's favourite singer, and undoubtedly she has sung in 'Paheli' as well. "I don't know if I am his favourite, but we certainly have a rapport and he gave me a chance and a hit in 'Jism'. I have stayed in Rajasthan for about 6-7 years, so singing with these instruments and incorporating their folk words came easy to me. I think the entire album is a treat," says Shreya.
'Paheli' does look and sound good. But will it be the much-awaited hit for Amol Palekar? The question will soon be answered!

* BOLLYWOOD'S WHO'S WHO AT 'SILSILAY'S MUSIC RELEASE
By Aira
Music Launch
Journalist-turned-director Khalid Mohamed is said to be a very sensitive director. His latest film 'Silsilay' had its music release where the who's who of Bollywood turned out and the media went berserk at one of the top night clubs of Mumbai after spotting so many Bollywood celebrities under one roof. 'Silsilay's music launch saw the entire Bachchan family as well. " We have a close association with Khalid and I have worked in his first film 'Fiza'.
So, today we are here to just wish him luck and be a support for him," said Jaya Bachchan. The multi- starrer film had all its stars strutting their stuff. " I love the music of the film, and I am going to be seen in a completely new image. I won't be a plain Jane," said a very excited Bhumika Chawla. Starring opposite Bhumika is Rahul Bose who is also doing a proper commercial film after a long time. "After 'Takshak', I have now worked in an absolute Bollywood set-up with so many.
'Silsilay' is about women power and has been produced by Vashu Bhagnani. Vashu Bhagnani has left no stone unturned for this film and therefore an ensemble cast of Tabu, Rahul Bose, Bhumika Chawla, Riya Sen, Jimmy Shergill, Ashmit Patel, Kay Kay Menon, Celina Jaitley, and Divya Dutta is there.
The film's music is rendered by Himesh Reshammiya. "I've had 95 per cent success ratio that my songs are always accepted and liked. But to combine a style that will cater to the tastes of the classes as well as masses is a difficult job." And the producer of the film is very happy with the outcome. "The entire credit for the film's music goes to Khalid because I went only twice for the music sittings and though I did suggest a few things but both Himesh and Khalid have worked really hard," said Vashu Bhagnani.
"The director, Khalid Mohammed, is always dealing with women in his films. The topics are so interesting when it comes to women that I can make just too many films. But 'silsilay' is all about the power of women." The sultry actress Celina Jaitley was in full form, mixing and chatting with everyone. " It was great working with Khalid. I love the script as it shows women in a stronger light," said Celina.
If the response of 'Silsiilay's music release translates into its box office collections, then it'll be a jackpot for producer Vashu Bhagnani and director Khalid Mohammed was the general comment.

* EKTA'S COMEDY FOR BROTHER
By Eye TV India Bureau
In the News
Ekta Kapoor is more popular than her father yesteryears' actor Jitendra and his brother actor Tusshar Kapoor. Ekta is proud to have reached her present status in the industry on her own via her popular television serials, including the one titled 'Saas-Bahu', on every housewife's lips. Ekta is not very happy with the present position of her brother in the industry. She is determined to do anything to improve his prospects. That's why she signs Tusshar in all her home productions. Since she has done only horror movies in the past, she has now announced that this time round she is bringing a comedy. "After watching my two horror movies, I did experience fear. I don't know about others though." Speaking about the movie's details, she said that Sangeet Sivan is directing this movie. Incidentally, Sivan had also produced horror films in the past. However, he wanted to do a comedy this time for a change. " He narrated the script to me, and I instantaneously agreed to produce 'Kya Kool Hain Hum'. This is how the shooting started."
"Why do you keep Tusshar in your movies?" In return she asks her critics, " What's wrong in keeping my brother in my movie? I have a lot of advantages by signing my brother. The movie is completed in time, as there is no hitch about dates. I have not to bother about getting dates from others. This makes my task easier."
Detailing more information, Ekta says that 'KKHH' is out and out a comedy. Well-known Anu Malik has provided the music. Besides, we have added music with those of Rishi Rich, Jaggi D and others, to popularize the movie among youths. When asked if she was not satisfied with Anu's music, she quipped, "No, I cannot imagine my movie without Anu Malik's music. In fact, extra music was introduced later in the movie.
Ekta was also asked about her production house's relationship with that of Pritish Nandy as both of them were producing more than half a dozen movies together. She refused to make any comment. "This is a matter concerning the board of my company. I cannot divulge more information about it." However, sources close to her confirm this that both Ekta and Pritish Nandy are doing about six movies together.

* ITEMS SONGS VITAL FOR BO
By Our Staff
In the News
Item songs are no more a taboo as considered in the recent past. This is clear from the fact that the top stars have been found doing item numbers these days. From the days of Helen who was the only item dancer in her days, we find every one following in her footsteps now. They are Aruna Irani to Yana Gupta to Sameera Reddy to Amrita Arora to Lara Dutta. Besides, others did not remain far behind in this game. Sonali Bendre did it in her movie' Bombay', Sanjay Dutt in 'Ishq Samander', Salman Khan in 'Love And Esquire', Aishwarya Rai in 'Shakti' and Sushmita Sen in 'Fiza'.
All of them showed their late-jhatke. Now, the directors and the producers have roped in super stars like Shah Rukh Khan and Amitabh Bachchan. In 'Kaal', Shah Rukh Khan will be picturized in a dance with Malaika Khan Arora. Besides, Amitabh Bachchan will entertain the audience in his 'Bunty and Babli'. In the past too, David Dhawan had signed Madhuri Dixit in his 'Bade Miyan Chhote Miyan' and Santoshi in 'Lajja'. Ram Gopal Verma had also showed item numbers in 'Road' and 'Company'. Even director Sanjay Gadhvi introduced these item numbers in his recent popular release 'Dhoom'. The song dhoom machale dhoom…became very popular. It was on everyone's lips. Only super stars don't sell these days, but the item dances do. Even a super star without an item number night be a complete loser.

* Sushmita Sen v/s Michelle Pfeiffer
By IndiaFM News Bureau, May 06th, 2005 - 0930 hrs IST
We recently visited Sushmita on the sets of Chingari to catch up on her upcoming release, Main Aisa Hi Hoon. 'Yet another supporting actress role?' we ask. “You can believe that until you hear what I have to say” she replies, as if catching the sulk on our face. “Harryji told me that he was making this film that is an adaptation of 'I am Sam'. And that he wanted me to play Michelle Pfiffer's role, that of an advocate. And I told him upright that Michelle Pfeiffer didn't have a great role. If I were to be in 'I am Sam', I wanted to play nothing but Sam!” she says animatedly. “You see, I am a very greedy actor. When I do something, I want to be doing the best that there is to the project” she laughs.
“But now I realize that I must have upset the man. Yet he asked me to hear out the story and my character in particular instead of taking a rash decision. Must admit, I wasn't interested because I had pretty much made up my mind against it. Because I didn't want to be saddled with yet another 'supporting actress' role like you said, that didn't have meat to it” she takes a dig at us.
“But on hindsight, I am so fortunate that the man extended that patience to me. Because the moment Harry began to narrate my character of Neeti Khanna, I was hooked! The graph that the role took was mind blowing! Harry has given my character such a free hand that she is among the most vital loops in the film. The transformation that the character undergoes is outstanding! So what happens to poor Miss Michelle? we kid. “Ah! We have beaten Michelle Pfeiffer hollow!” Sush gesticulates with a wave of her hand. “You got to see this one, it's fascinating!” she says with a spark that is very rare, very Sush.
* Ghostbusters with Anuj Sawhey
By IndiaFM News Bureau, May 06th 2005 - 0930 hrs IST
Bollywood more often than not messes it up when it comes to horrors. And the off-screen incidents end up being scarier than the onscreen ones. When we talked to Naina herself, she shooed us away saying “Don't come to me digging for creepy stories. I don't believe in the supernatural, so don't experience it either!” Urmila declares. “But Anuj might have something for you guys…” she hinted.
So Anuj it was, and must confess the guy didn't disappoint. So we settle with the young actor for a scare dip. “One day during the shoot, Shripalji asked me to wait in my van while the shot was being readied. So I went to my trailer van and picked a book to read. Suddenly I hear someone tap on the door. I opened and looked but nobody. I told myself that I must have mistaken it for the noise on the sets and settled back with my book” Anuj informs us.
“But in 5 minutes, I heard the tap again, and this time I was pretty sure that I hadn't mistaken it for something else. So I went & checked but didn't see anyone. This happened 7-8 times. Thinking it might be a prank, I parked myself next to the door and flung the door open when I heard the next knock, but believe me, to my disbelief, there wasn't a single soul. Now I asked the spotboy to keep a watch to know if someone were playing the fool, but the knocks continued & he didn't see a soul”
“Finally I did what I could best, I got the guy inside and we both waited indoors to hear the knock, but once again, there's simply noone to be seen! Looking at me uneasy the guy asked me not to fret, because I wasn't the only one, and that there were several bizarre incidents happening on the sets. The guy told me that in good faith but that simply added to my scare factor!” he smiles. “I just couldn't figure it out…” he coils up. We guess certain things are better left unfigured…huh?

* Aamir's cohort in crime!
Actor Aamir Khan is known to aim for perfection in everything that he does. And that includes his fetish and talent for pulling pranks, even while he works. Good friend and stunt director Allan Amin seems to have been influenced by AK's predilection and is proving to be strong competition, too. Apparently, while shooting for a show for Zoom TV, Aamir told of how Allan dressed up a fat, hairy man on the sets of 'Rang De Basanti' and introduced him as his stunt double to a firang actress who was supposed to do a motorbike scene with the stuntman. This upset the foreigner a great deal and, after several takes when she found out that it was just a joke, she chased Allan and Aamir all over the sets, demanding revenge! Well, Aamir now has not only a partner in crime, but also pretty girls running after him. Now isn't that just a 'perfect' place to be in, AK?

We all know that ace designer Neeta Lulla had to face a lot of flak for her designs for Aishwarya Rai's clothes at the Cannes Film Festival, but luckily it didn't lead to any bad blood between the two women. Proof of that pudding is the fact that the gorgeous actress has once again entrusted Neeta with her wardrobe, this time for Jagmohan Mundhra's forthcoming film, 'Provoked'. Ash and Neeta have flown to London for the shoot, with a bagful of costumes for the movie. On the eve of her departure from Mumbai, Neeta told us, "It's a realistic movie, so the clothes will be also like that. Besides that, I share a special rapport with Ash that makes it easy to design for her." Well, is the magic of 'Devdas' going to be repeated? 'Cannes' Neeta do it again? We wait to watch…

* Now Amitabh turns blind!
After sensibly playing the role of a teacher of a blind girl in ‘Black’, superstar Amitabh Bachchan will now essay the role of a blind lawyer in the film ‘Zamaanat’.
“I will be playing the role of a blind advocate who seeks justice for a young innocent man facing charges of murder,” says Bachchan.
The movie has been directed by S.Raamanathan, who considers Amitabh Bachchan his lucky mascot. Raamanathan has a number of biggies to his credit like Mahaan, Giraftaar and Gangaa Jamunaa Saraswati.
The film stars the Big B, Karishma Kapoor and Arshad Warsi. It pairs Amitabh Bachchan and Vijayashanti for the first time. It took a seven long years to make the movie, but the maker is hopeful that the delay will not affect the film’s prospects as he feels that it is a very good story.
“Every story should touch one’s heart and mind. This is a good story. There is no vulgarity and nudity,” said Raamanathan.
He believes that the sequences between Amitabh and Vijayashanti and also those between Karisma Kapoor and the Big B are the USP of Zamaanat, which will definitely catch the viewer unawares.
Years ago, Raamanathan had directed Amitabh Bachchan in the Bollywood classic ‘Bombay To Goa’, which catapulted Bachchan to stardom. The film is slated for release in June.

* 'I'll be around for 20 years'
Shiney Ahuja says he's very different from the wheeler-dealer he played in Sudhir Mishra's "Hazaaron Khwahishein Aisi".
"I wish I was like him. Maybe my career would've taken off in a big way by now. I'm idealistic about a lot of things, including my career.
"I can't socialize just to be noticed. The only reason I should be cast is because I suit the role. Believe me, this attitude finally earns you the film industry's respect. I'm not looking at short-term gains. I plan to be around for 20 years."
Shiney isn't too happy with the way "Karam" shaped up. "When the film was narrated to me it was a two-hero film. That's not how it turned out," Shiney tells in an interview.
"My role was greatly reduced only because I was a newcomer. I protested to my director. But he told me the film was out of his control. You only have to see the length of my role in the script and what remains of it on screen.
"The director Sanjay F. Gupta and I worked hard on making my cop's role different. None of that remains! I was given a list of scenes. John had 18-20. I had 12-13. So we were almost equals. I also had songs. None of that remained."
Does Shiney blame his co-star John Abraham?
"I honestly can't say. I don't know what happened. John is a wonderful person. I had jaundice during 'Karam'. He called a doctor and really looked after me. So I don't know... What I do know is finally I had only six-seven scenes in 'Karam'.
"All my other films including the forthcoming 'Kal' have me in central roles. It's a film directed by Ruchi Narain. And it's totally about my character Tarun. Throughout you see me in coma. You'll see me on my feet in only five scenes. But they're so effective.
"I also have Amit ('Jism') Saxena's 'Agar'. Here I play a very nice regular simple sweet guy. The wicked glint you see in 'Sins' and 'Hazaaron Khwahishein' is not me," chuckles the Delhi boy who had his formal education in Ranchi and Lucknow.
"My Hindi is very good. That's an advantage among today's actors, isn't it?"
Shiney has been happily married for four years now.
"My wife Anu wants to stay out of the limelight. Both of us are nurturing my career right now. I'm ambitious and I want to be successful but not starry.
"So far after three releases I'm still the same guy I used to be. I feel humbled by the praise for 'Hazaaron Khwahishein Aisi'."
Was he comfortable doing those steamy scenes in "Sins"?
"I can't get judgmental about my characters. I can't let my conscience dictate my choice of roles. Personally I would never be caught with my pants down like my character...
"As for the eyebrow-raising photo-session with my co-star Seema Rahmani (where he was in bed with his hand covering her breasts) I've to do my job.
"The publicity isn't my look-out. As much as I disagree with the producer I've to do what's right for the film. So much money is invested in a film. I can't afford to be self-righteous. I can argue about my character. I can't argue about the publicity. I know nothing about it."
Of the three films he has been seen in so far Shiney Ahuja has proved himself a newcomer who can tackle the most complex of characterizations with ease.
He seems perfectly relaxed acquiring the reputation of a thinking actor so early in his career.
"I've had one release a month in the last three months, all very different from one another. Whether it was the priest in 'Sins', the cop in 'Karam' or the morally compromised wheeler-dealer in 'Hazaaron Khwahishein Aisi'...
"They're all part of a larger design which I've devised for my career. I've actually been shooting for five films in the last two years. It's just a coincidence that three of them have come together."
He's delighted at the chance to be so versatile so early in his career. "Especially 'Hazaaron Khwahishein' ... which was actually my first film."
Shiney feels like an outsider in Bollywood.
"But at the end of the day the industry does recognize true talent. That's why I never shy away from auditioning for roles. I can't understand why colleagues feel insulted. I love doing auditions even if I feel I'm not suitable for a role.
"When I auditioned for my roles in 'Sins' or 'Hazaaron Khawhishein' I knew I was a different person from what I had to play. But because I had done 60-70 ads in a very short time, I had a clear insight into the character's psyche. When I auditioned I made sure they could see the character in me."
Shiney has taken part in a lot of theatre workshops.
"I guess that helped me do the complex roles in 'Sins' and 'Hazaaron Khwahishein' ... It is interesting how I got my character Vikram's role in Sudhir Mishra's film. I auditioned for K.K. Menon's part.
"But I also read the lines of the other hero. They thought I was more like the wheeler-dealer Vikram than the idealist Siddharth. In real life I think I'm a bit of both."

* People set fire at talent show!
Arson and vandalism marred the first day of auditions for Sony Entertainment's musical talent hunt "Fame Gurukul" here Friday when aspirants went on the rampage protesting mismanagement.
Sony had to cancel the audition following the chaos at the venue in Science City in east Kolkata. The mob set banners and posters on fire and ransacked auditorium property. Police had to baton-charge the crowds and several people were injured.

* Ekta pulls Mihir out of Sarkkar
Television actor Ronit Roy has been banned from acting in "Sarrkkar" by Ekta Kapoor, who felt his presence in another soap at the same time as her "Kasauti Zindagi Kay" featuring him, could affect the viewings of her serial.
The actor, who plays debonair Rishabh Bajaj in "Kasauti...", was supposed to have acted in the pivotal role of a wounded chief minister's son in the Shobha De-written script.
The serial was also to star his real-life brother Rohit Roy. But sitcom-mogul Kapoor clipped his wings just before he made his flight - either he continued playing Bajaj on "Kasauti...", or he moved on completely to the new soap.
Roy opted to stay on in Kapoor's serial.
"It wasn't a show of strength, or my attempt to prove how powerful I am," laughs Kapoor.
"Ronit is a dear friend and a very important actor in our serial. I had no objection to him doing another serial. But to my horror, 'Sarrkkar' was slotted at the same time as my 'Kasauti...'. Surely, we couldn't have Ronit competing against himself," she explained.
As a result, Ronit has stopped shooting for "Sarrkkar" with immediate effect, thereby putting the whole project into a quandary.

* Mallika fell for Italian businessman?
by Debasis Jana
Though Mallika didn't quite impress her costars in Mumbai, but she sure did impress someone from faraway Italy. In one of the parties in Mumbai, she took fancy for a tall and handsome firang called Hido. The firang was, too, quite awestruck to find her in vivacious posture. When introduced to her, he naturally got more curious. When he asked about the two bouncers she had, Mallika promptly gave him the story that she being a politician's daughter, round-the-clock security was mandatory. This rich, high profile Italian businessman in his early 30s was much more than impressed. It is hear that he got her gifts every time they met after that even if it was for the second-third time on the same day. It seems Mallika has fallen for his Italian charm. Not only had they been spending quality time together, she has already been to Italy for weeklong holiday after attending an awards function in London. Seems, our lady who dreamt of having a threesome with Robert De Niro and Jack Nicholson has finally found at least one foreign match.
* Gal fan bit into John's shoulder!
by Debasis Jana
John Abraham had a worse experience recently. When he had gone for a concert in Surinam, an enthusiastic female fan bit into his shoulder and kept biting hard. When John tried to pull himself away he also dragged the female's teeth (and the rest of her) stuck to him. However, he didn't have Bips running after the female molester to biff her up.

* Substance not wardrobe
- screenindia.com
It's time our media grows up and stops making a controversy out of every small event in celebrity lives. What Aishwarya Rai carries for her wardrobe at the Cannes Film Festival is not the most important agenda of her visit. It’s how she conducts herself at the occasion that will determine how the West will perceive India.
And Aishwarya has already proved her calibre on and off-screen to be bestowed the rare honour of being invited by the Cannes Film Festival four years in succession. It is childish to compare newcomer Mallika Sherawat, invited on a personal invitation by co-star Jackie Chan for the premiere of The Myth, with Rai being felicitated as a brand ambassador.
Sherawat can hire as many designers as she desires and exhibit her sex appeal to attract headlines. The media can cook up as many scoops and sensationalize the news, the fact remains that Aishwarya Rai is the undisputed global star. It’s something her rivals better get used to.

* Circle of Jag
by: Amit Roy
- mid-day.com
Jagmohan Mundhra is just about to start shooting Provoked, based on the story of Kiranjit Ahluwalia, a Sikh woman who was sent to prison for 10 years in Britain for the manslaughter of her abusive husband, Dipak.
I know something about Kiranjit’s landmark case (which changed the law and made it more understanding towards women who kill after suffering years of domestic violence) because when she was released in September 1992, after serving three years of her sentence, I was the first one to interview her.
Jag has got a great cast for his film, which is based on Rahila Gupta’s Circle of Light, with Aishwarya Rai playing Kiranjit. Nandita Das, Naveen Andrews (as Dipak), Robbie Coltrane (as the lawyer), Miranda Richardson and Rebecca Pidgeon are among the others in what should be a worthy successor to Jag’s Bawandar.
I remember Kiranjit telling me of her mixed emotions after the death of her husband. She felt she was at last free. “I also felt remorse because I had robbed my two sons of their father,” she pondered.
Nandita has said she and Ash have something in common. “I will be a jury member at Cannes this year — Ash was a jury member two years ago,” she told Jag, who feels he is a born-again serious film director.

* Ismail Darbar kicked out!
Aadesh Srivastava has replaced Ismail Darbar as composer for Sultan Productions’ film, Husn. An insider reveals that Darbar, who hasn’t really tasted success after his fallout with director Sanjay Leela Bhansali, hiked his price from Rs two lakh to Rs five lakh per song.
That too, after recording two songs for the film. Says producer Farah Sultan Ahmed, “Aadesh is like family; I’ve asked him to record the songs though I haven’t yet thrown Darbar out. I have to teach him a lesson. He can’t take people for granted!”
Husn has been in trouble from day one. Lead actress Meghana Naidu harassed Ahmed by canceling the dates she’d allotted for this film. But when the producer threatened to throw her out of the project, the newcomer herself opted out, citing price issues. She was soon replaced by Meera Vasudevan.

* Big B mobbed by Dubai fans!
Amitabh Bachchan was left feeling alarmed and overwhelmed at the same time when he went to inaugurate a jewellery outlet in Dubai and almost got mobbed by thousands of fans.
On Sunday, the people behind Damas jewellery in Dubai invited Bachchan, their brand ambassador, to launch a new outlet. But thousands of fans arrived unannounced demanding to have a look at their icon, according to information reaching here.
The crowds got so unmanageable that Bachchan had to be sneaked out of the store...only to have hordes of fans chasing the star, chanting: "Amitabh Bachchan zindabad!"
Back from Dubai Monday morning, Bachchan seemed to be baffled by the clamour. "The Damas people took me to a shopping mall. And it got really, really crowded," told Bachchan.
"The ovation was really quite embarrassing. Even after all these years I'm not quite used to people reacting in this way... It was a jewellery store in Dubai and I got really alarmed when the glass started shattering all round me.
"The crowds got uncontrollable, and I had to be whisked away to another shop within the same mall. Thousands of people followed me chanting my name. It was most embarrassing.
"Then at SAKS too they got excited. I was quickly taken away from the backdoor...It was too much. I'm overwhelmed by the response of people in Dubai...
"And very soon I'll have a special gift for them...a qawwali in my new film 'Bunty Aur Babli' featuring Aishwarya Rai, Abhishek (Bachchan) and me. I feel the qawwali is going to create a stampede.
Audiences are going to stop the screening of "Bunty Aur Babli" and ask for an encore of the qawwali. And it isn't me they're going to be watching. It's Abhishek!"

* Mallika ready with cheesy fun
Get ready for a summer of laughs. Beginning with Ekta Kapoor's ha-ha-thon "Kya Kool Hain Hum", which opened to an approving crowd of leery thrill seekers last week, Hindi cinema seems to be poised on the precipice of pungent parody.
While the risqué rhythms of "Kya Kool Hain Hum" might not cut much ice with more sophisticated elements in the audience, next week's biggie "Jo Bole So Nihal" is a farce-fest that should appeal across the board. This isn't the first time that director Rahul Rawail is doing a comedy. However, his efforts to generate laughter with Sunny Deol's papa in "Mast Kalandar" weren't all that successful.
Right after Rawail's film there's "Bachke Rehna Re Baba" where Rekha and Mallika Sherawat play mom and daughter whooping it up. This one is clearly a ladies-day-ouch kind of melee-melange that could find an audience provided it wants to see a mother and daughter have a ball instead of the bawl, as they usually do. And with the two funsters Paresh Rawal and Satish Shah on the prowl there's much more to giggle about in this fun fest.
If "Jo Bole..." clicks, the comedy in Hindi films will benefit immensely. Around the corner are more big comic outings, like Shaad Ali's "Bunty Aur Babli" where Abhishek Bachchan and Rani Mukherjee star as two con-persons on the run, outdoing a canny cop (Amitabh Bachchan) every step of the way.
Needless to say none of these films has any element of tears or high drama. "It's full-on time pass at the theatres," says Riteish Deshmukh, who's been a part of two recent comedies, "Masti" and "Kya Kool Hain Hum".
And he has a point. Laughter seems to be the prevalent mood of cinema all over the country. In Tamil Nadu, Kamal Haasan's "Mumbai Xpress" is chugging along full-throttle. In Karnataka, the laughter is getting even louder.
Kannada heartthrob Dhyaan who recently did "Jootata", which was the Kannada version of Priyadarshan's Hindi laugh riot "Hungama", is already doing another comedy called "Jackpot" in which he plays a Casanova reborn as a woman.
"I guess cinema in every part of the world is looking for laughter, because that's what the audience wants," says Dhyaan who has also been offered a chance to do a major comedy in Hindi.
"It's based on Shakespeare's 'Comedy of Errors'. I think the era of good, clean, wholesome family comedies is coming back. The cheap under-the-belt variety of humour is certainly not desirable any longer."

* I will now marry again: Saif
Bollywood star Saif Ali Khan, who hit headlines recently for his marriage breakdown with film-actress-wife Amrita Singh, has said that he has no reason to marry again as he has two kids to look after.
"I don't want to go into details upon my divorce. I have two beautiful kids to look after and, as such, there's no reason for marrying again," The News quoted him as saying in an interview with GEO TV.
His statement is being taken as a surprise as speculations have been rife for almost a year that he had divorced Amrita and had plans of marrying with Italian model Roza. Though all his family members, including his mother Sharmila Tagore and sister Soha Ali Khan had openly disapproved his move.
Saif is in Karachi to attend one of his cousin's marriage.
He added: "I don't want to comment on my divorce and want to make it clear that I have no intentions to get married in near future."
Saif reportedly said that sometimes life took a 180-degree turn and everything changed in a moment. "My marriage was, like my divorce, controversial," he said.
About what drove him to visit Pakistan, the actor said, "listening to Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan live on the occasion of my cousin's marriage."
Talking about his forthcoming films, he said he was currently working with Preity Zinta in Salaam Namastay.

* Amisha's missing ... Vikram's missing her!
All those wondering where Amisha Patel is - she's decided for once to combine her work with a pleasure trip, without carrying any professional or personal baggage from back home. She's currently on an extended tour of the United States, with Adnan Sami. And she's thoroughly enjoying herself while rediscovering the gallis and chaubaras of the land that was once her home. Ms. Patel seems to be missing in action for us Bharat vaasis, because for once a star like her has decided not to be accessible on the omnipresent mobile phone. Amisha's cell is firmly switched off and she can be reached only by her nearest and dearest at a local number, or perhaps another that only those special people know. In fact, we had to call one of those 'special' people, Vikram Bhatt, to find out Ms. P's whereabouts. And he laughingly told us, "She's touring with Adnan and having a gala time. It will be a while before she's back." Way to go Amisha!
* Arjun and Priyanka - 'Ice Ice Baby'!
We have some interesting news hot off the sets - it happened during a shoot of the Arjun Rampal-Priyanka Chopra starrer, 'Yakeen'. The director of the film, Girish Dhamija, has a tale to share with us: The shoot was in progress at Rohtang Pass, high in the Himalayas, the scene set against a backdrop of ice. Since that particular setting was not easily available, the crew decided to hire trucks to bring the ice from elsewhere. Every morning truckloads of ice were collected and assembled at the location. After each day's long shoot, the same ice was collected again in the trucks and dumped outside the hotel where the group was staying. Dhamija laughs, "Early morning, when the local people who were out for a morning walk came out of their homes, to their horror, they were greeted by huge piles of ice! Imagine their plight - they would be totally confused, since they had no clue where the ice had come from. This led to much panic in the town!" Well, it was probably 'cold' comfort when they discovered that it was just the wild ways of the filmi duniya, eh?
* Chunky flies high!
Even while Chunky Pandey readies for his next release, 'D', he is quite excited about the fact that his recent shows in Johannesburg and Durban in South Africa went pretty well. "It was a great success," laughed the actor when we asked him how his shows abroad were faring. "The response was absolutely phenomenal. For the show in Durban we had a crowd of 12,000 people, while about 8,000 fans turned up in Johannesburg." With the likes of Priyanka Chopra, Shahid Kapoor and Salman Khan dancing at the events, could it be any other way? Whether Chunky's next film does well or not, he already has an alternative career lined up - and it's definitely 'showing'!

* Gullu makes 'Mari' with Sallu!
Bollywood's original Bad Man and the Bad Boy are bonding again after a gap of ten long years. And it's all due to a film, which happens to be Salman Khan's first Hollywood movie, a production called 'Marigold'. Arch-villain Gulshan Grover is already a veteran of the West, with around a half dozen Hollywood movies to his credit. But Gullu is especially excited about the project for one simple reason: he's working with Salman again. As he says, "The last film we did together was 'Chandramukhi'," says Gulshan and adds, "Salman is a wonderful guy - he really goes out of his way to help others. This time, too, Salman took great care of the rest of the Hollywood cast and unit. Since they were new here, Salman provided them with every possible comfort, at times paying from his own pocket." Now we wonder if Sallu extended his generosity towards re-bonded buddy Gullu as well!
* What do Ramu and Madhur have in common?
Ace director Ramgopal Varma and his one-time assistant Madhur Bhandarkar have a mutual passion, besides being known for their hard-hitting, realistic movies. And it has nothing to do with their heroines, we assure you. What we are talking about is their past employment; before shooting into the limelight as successful filmmakers, both men used to run video libraries. Ramu was in charge of a shop in Hyderabad a decade ago, before he made waves with 'Shiva', while Madhur worked at a video library in Khar (a western suburb of Mumbai). Is that where the coincidence stops? Our spies are out trying to discover more…
* The secret of Hema's energy
Time has only made Bollywood's original Dream Girl more gorgeous. And hard-working, too. The lovely lady shuttles between the capital, and Mumbai while shooting for her television serial and other projects.Even daughter Esha exclaims, "I don't know where Mom gets so much energy from. At her age, I wonder what I'll be like! She goes for her Parliament sessions, and rushes back for her shoots - she's just so tired at the end of the day. I keep telling her not to overwork herself, but she just loves working." We wonder what the secret of her energy could be - any special magic formula, Hemaji?

* Paheli
By Joginder Tuteja, May 09, 2005 - 1040 hrs IST
Yes, movies with mammoth starcast, reputed names, big production values and a superstar at the helm can be made in a jiffy - and without much noise ! 'Paheli' is an apt example of one such venture that has everything which is sufficient to create immense hype. Shahrukh Khan, Big B, Rani Mukherjee, Suneil Shetty as a stellar starcast. Red Chillies Entertainment (SRK's home production) as the presenters. Gulzar saab and MM Kreem handling the music. Ravi K Chandran as the cinematographer. And last but not the least, Amol Palekar directing his first mainstream commercial movie. With all these factors combined together, it is commendable to see the movie being shot and completed in record time and being made ready for release.
When Gulzar saab writes, people listen. And when MM Kreem is in charge of the compositions, one expects some trademark soft'n'soulful melodies. Class is prevelant in the opening number 'Dheere Jalna' that is sung amazingly well by Sonu Nigam. One is reminded of the 60s era while hearing this song that is rich lyrically. Inspite of a Rajasthani setting, the tune has a Bengali flavor. Shreya Ghoshal makes an appearance towards the middle of the song and reinstates the belief that she is an immediate threat to Alka Yagnik. While Sunidhi Chauhan is having multiple hits when it comes to peppy numbers, Shreya Ghoshal is busy rendering melodious tracks one after another. This one is another hit to the names of Sonu and Shreya. 'Instrumental' of 'Dheere Chalna' too is different from the routine instrumentals and makes a good impression with violin holding the centre stage. Drum beats throughout the track gets the passion alive on the screen.
Classical music forms the base of yet another hummable track 'Kanga Re' that is sung by number of female singers - Shreya Ghoshal, Madhurshree, Bela Shinde and Kalapini Komakili. Sonu Nigam is the only male voice in this song that clearly brings out the Rajasthani ambience of the movie. A clean entertainer that sounds simple, it would have required hard work from the composer and lyricist to create this song. Choreography is eye pleasant too while Rani Mukherjee looks great in her getup.
'Phir Raat Kati' is the shortest song in the entire album and so far the most enjoyable of all the songs heard so far. Mark these words - it is going to be sensation when the number comes on the screen ! Fast paced track based on Rajasthani folk music, it is commendable to see MM Kreem fuse it so well with contemporary style. Sukhwinder Singh is good in his full throated Rajashtahani accent while Sunidhi Chauhan is a revelation (yet again) as she enlivens the proceedings with her spirited rendition. The song gets repeated and deservingly so as you won't get tired of hearing this one ! This is one of the best songs composed this year so far.
After a breathless (literally) 'Phir Raat Kati', 'Laaga Re Jal Laaga' is the 'Ghanan Ghanan' (Lagaan) of 2005. Still an original number, it is about rains coming down and is sung well by MM Kreem, Sonu Nigam and Shruti Sadolikar. Unlike the previous three tracks, this one is more of a situational song rather than of a kind that you would go home singing.
MM Kreem's favorite instrument (Violin) is back in force at the beginning of 'Khaali Hai Tere Bina Dono Ankhiyan'. Hariharan and Bela Shinde bring out the pain associated with separation from the loved one and give a certain class to the 'dard-e-judaai' genre. A slow track, it is a good listening in an isolated dark room. But don't try playing it when you have friends at your place for a Saturday evening outing. It won't fit in the mood !
'Minnat Kare' is an all-women song that has a group of girls educating their friend on how to show some 'nakhras' when her lover comes knocking her doors. Lyrics are the mainstay of this track that keeps you interested in the proceedings and makes you look forward to seeing the song on screen. Sung by Shreya Ghoshal, Madhushree and Bela Shende, the number has various shades associated with it. Another situational track, it too has a classy appeal that should strike chord with the lovers of good music; though it may not exactly attract the front benchers in single screen theatres.
'Paheli' has one of the most original and classy score for a SRK film. Though it may be a surprise for his hardcore fans, for the folks who like to hear mainstream songs based on classical music, it should be an enriching experience. In fact it comes closer to recent score of 'Parineeta' that also boasts of rich Indian music. For those expecting a typical Bollywood score with SRK, it is time to look at 'Paheli' differently. This is a complete contrast from the 'Kaal Dhamaal' that King Khan has created recently !

Interview # 26
This Interview is from “www.santabanta.com”
* Interview: Vivek Oberoi
“Lara Dutta was so much fun: Vivek Oberoi”
Actor Vivek Oberoi is upbeat over his latest Bollywood outing in the spooky thriller "Kaal", which has been well received by audiences across India.
Vivek denied that any rivalry marred his relations with his "Kaal" co-stars.
"Shooting `Kaal' with Ajay Devgan, John Abraham, Esha Deol and Lara Dutta was so much fun... I had a ball! I've never experienced the bitterness and jealousy among co-stars that I had heard about," Vivek tells in an interview.
It was at Vivek's behest that Soham Shah, the film's director, abandoned a ready script and disappeared into the National Corbett Park to write "Kaal". "When he narrated it (the script) to me, I was blown," says Vivek.
He also charmingly pleads guilty to charges of verbal diarrhoea. "There's some truth to that observation. I should learn to shut my trap," he admits.
Excerpts from the interview:
Q: You appear to be very upbeat about "Kaal".
A: I am! It got a historic opening. The kind of advance booking reports that came in for the film is unbelievable!
Q: Is "Kaal" a scary film?
A: It's basically designed to entertain. Actually, a lot of my films have turned out scary after release even when they weren't intended to be. Jokes apart, "Kaal" is a really scary film. Producer Karan Johar got nightmares after seeing it. I'm sure he'll sleep peacefully when he hears the outcome at the box office.
Q: I believe the cast had a blast?
A: Shooting "Kaal" with Ajay, John, Esha and Lara was so much fun. You know I had heard how difficult it was for heroes and heroines to shoot together. But after "Masti" and "Yuva", "Kaal" is my third ensemble film in a row, and I had a ball! I've never experienced the bitterness and jealousy among co-stars that I had heard about.
Q: With no one at all?
A: No one! I started off with Ajay for "Company". I've done three other films with him and now call him 'Bade Bhaiyya'. We both love playing practical jokes. All our co-stars in "Kaal" were so weary of us. They never knew what we were up to. We had to shoot for 12-14 hours a day. And many of our colleagues were too tired to be targets of jokes.
But we chose a poor sweet guy from the unit. I'd call his room pretending to be a spirit and hang up on him, knock on his door and then disappear before he opened. We had a guy write something in Urdu with artificial blood in his room. He wanted to pack up and go!
Q: Do scary movies scare the actors?
A: The ambience during "Kaal" did get spooky. We used to joke a lot more often to keep our spirits alive.
Q: And how was Soham Shah as a director?
A: I had recommended Soham to Ram Gopal Varma. That's how you've this amazing film where Soham has gone from Varma to Dharma (Karan Johar's production house). I remember him from the days when all the Gujarati girls used to run after him. We've been buddies for really long.
Long ago he came to me with a script that was plagiarised. I asked him why he needed to do that when he was so talented. Because of that one statement, Soham abandoned an entire bound script with dialogues, disappeared into the National Corbett Park and wrote "Kaal".
When he narrated it (the script) to me, I was blown. Soham never once lost his cool while making such a complex film. He's so well planned and yet so spontaneous with his actors. He stuck to his guns and yet fired any way he wanted.
Q: On "Koffee with Karan", John Abraham said you suffer from verbal diarrhoea.
A: There's some truth to that observation. I should learn to shut my trap. But John is a genuinely sweet guy. I don't have a problem with anything he says. He didn't mean any harm. He is genuinely fond of me. I really enjoyed working with him. In fact, I met his mom at the Make-A-Wish foundation and we got along very well.
Q: What next?
A: I'm very excited about Sachin Bajaj's film, which I start May 4. For the first time I get to work with Sunny Deol. I'm so excited. It's an adventure-comedy. I love the character, the youthful exuberance and the style imagined for the film. This film is going to be my showcase for some kick-*donkey* action. It will be my first full-fledged action film.
Though "Yuva" was an action film, I didn't have any action to do. I want to fly across mountains and rivers. This is my fantasy come true. Exactly parallel to that I start Sujoy Ghosh's cute and funny film "Home Delivery". Everyone who has read the script has freaked out. I'm also starting Indra Kumar's next comedy called "Pyare Mohan", an absolutely crazy comedy.
Q: How many fellatio jokes has Indra Kumar put in after "Masti"?
A: None whatsoever. It has zero innuendos and it's hilarious. We shoot in August. Then I've Manish Malhotra's first film and Soham's second. It's a full year for me, and a full life.
Q: Tsunami seems to be behind you.
A: Not really. The work has got going. The orphanage will be ready in two months. The village will also be reconstructed.
Q: What about (Tamil Nadu Chief Minister) J. Jayalalitha's efforts to play down your achievements?
A: It was hardly anything more than a sensational press story. It didn't stop me from doing what I was doing in Tamil Nadu. Our work has been moving smoothly on course. I've no problems in Tamil Nadu whatsoever. In fact, everyone is being very co-operative.

Interview # 27
This Interview is from “www.bollyvista.com”
* Interview: Ishaa Koppikar
“ 'Neha and myself are two of the hottest girls in tinsel town' – Ishaa Koppikar ”
By Vickey Lalwani ©2005 Bollyvista.com
With 'Masti', Indian cinema was introduced to the juvenile innuendoes of naughty young comedies; something America has seen a lot of, with films like ‘American Pie'. With 'Kya Kool Hai Hum' (Tusshar Kapoor, Ritesh Deshmukh, Ishaa Koppikar, Neha Dhupia), things seem to have gone a bit over the top.
Read on for Ishaa Koppikar interview with Vickey Lalwani on K2H2's release:
Q. How are you feeling about 'Kya Kool Hai Hum'?
A. I am nervous and excited as well. I want this film to click. I have worked very hard for it. 'Kya Kool Hai Hum' is basically a naughty comedy. It's meant for young people, or actually, people who have a true sense of humour. Only hypocrites will not enjoy this film. It's slightly naughty comedy, with double meaning to it.
Q. But isn't that crass?
A. Like whenever you get an SMS joke on your mobile phone, the only ones you actually laugh are the double meaning and naughty ones, don't you? In fact, you forward them too. Times are changing. Let's remove the masks from our faces.
Q. But can you call 'Kya Kool Hai Hum' a family film?
A. Hmmm... I can't say that. But I guess that times have changed. Today, youngsters are very comfortable sitting with their parents and discussing almost everything under the sun.
Q. What is the film about?
A. The film is about two guys, Rahul, (Tusshar) and Karan (Ritesh). Rahul's a sincerely nice guy, while Karan is looking for all the extras in life. He thinks he's cool and is always in control of the situation and he has an answer for everything. He always comes up with a solution. And he wants a lot of women! (Laughs).
Q. The film sounds an extension of 'Masti'?
A. ‘Masti' was about married couples. 'Kya Kool Hai Hum' is about two young guys.
Q. Are you happy with the opening that the film has got?
A. Yes. The film has got an excellent buzz. The early reports suggest an awesome chemistry between Tusshar and Ritesh. Watch out for Tusshar, he has shed his boy next-door image and is in true form in the comic sequences. His comic timing is simply awesome!
Q. And Neha Dhupia?
A. Neha is a very talented actress. She has lovely facial expressions, and it was a lot of fun working with her. I think she is too good. She still hasn't got her due in Bollywood.
Q. Are you and Neha very hot in the film?
A. You must be kidding! Everyone knows Neha as a sex symbol after films like 'Julie' and 'Sheesha'. 'Kya Kool Hain Hum' is going to be anything but cool. First, it's a sex comedy and second, Neha and myself are two of the hottest girls in tinsel town. Expect us to send temperatures soaring.
Q. How has your Bollywood journey been so far?
A. I'm lucky because the industry's really been more than nice to me. I'm working with some great filmmakers and this is incredible because these are people I've looked up to all my life.

* Will Bachchan say yes to Devgan?
06th May 2005 09.01 IST
By Agencies
Ajay Devgan has been entrusted with the job of persuading mega superstar Amitabh Bachchan to do a coveted role.
About two and a half years ago, producer Dinesh Patel had launched the muhurt of his movie 'Assar-The Impact' to be directed by Kukku Kohli . The movie's cast comprised the pair of Devgan and Priyanka Chopra .
The shooting of the movie didn't begin though even after several months. The reason was stated to be that the legendary Dilip Kumar was to play a role.
However, Dilip didn't like the assigned role. As a result, Patel decided to abandon the project, for the time being.
It is only now that Patel has decided to resume the shooting of his abandoned 'Assar'.
Patel discussed the matter with director Kukku and the latter with Devgan. According to reliable reports, Devgan has already given dates for the shoot. Besides, Priyanka has patched up with the producer who had been angry with her.
Now, the million dollar question is about who will play Dilip's role. Since Bachchan is the most successful actor playing a father these days, the producer and the director have asked Devgan to persuade Amitabh to do the coveted role.
Patel is very confident that Bachchan will accept to act in the movie. However, there is no official commitment by the authorities. Yet, the preparations are on to relaunch the movie in a vigorous way in May or June this year.
If Bachchan says yes, this will be his fifth film with Devgan after ‘Major Saab’, Hindustan Ki Kasam , Hum Kisise Kum Nahin and Khakee .

When Sunny stopped the car outside his house at Muradpura, the robbers gheraoed his car, on which his father and sister came out too.

After the incident, police sounded a red alert in Muradpura. Police security was also sent to the cash collection transaction centre of Vijaya Bank.
Said SP Toor, ‘‘Police teams also went out in several areas to look for the motorcycles, but did not get any clue.’’
# Helmets hid faces

Tough journey

Flooring buffs in Pakistan
"Recently I was invited to have dinner with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf. I’m looking forward to going to Pakistan. President Musharraf said I'm very popular there. I felt proud to represent the film industry at such an important occasion."
Gossip be damned
"I don't let gossip about my alleged affairs with Abhishek (Bachchan) or Govinda bother me anymore. People have even married me off to Karan Johar! The rumours about Govinda did make me furious. I felt sorry for Sunitaji, his wife. As far as Abhishek goes, I’m not dating him. I have no time for dates."

* Interview : Akshay Kumar personally passionate about Waqt
Spanning from action thrillers to comedies, Akshay Kumar has done it all in the time span of fifteen years in Bollywood. He has tasted success and failure, but he marched ahead with vigor. The biggest khiladi is settling down at last from his death-defying stunt to the heart wrenching family drama. His latest is Vipul Shah’s Waqt.
Excerpts from an Interview:
Q. In Waqt you play a spoilt brat. Elaborate your character.
A. Waqt is about relationship between a father and son. This is a film that is a real life story of every household. Mr. Bachchan plays my father in the film. I’m dependant on him for everything right from my childhood. I never realize or understand what he expects from me. It’s too late when I understand the priorities.
Q. Are you a similar character in real life?
A. Partially. My upbringing was also similar. Playing this character came straight out of me. I’m now a father and have similar such relation with my son too.
Q. This is your second film with Vipul. How was it?
A. Working with him is very pleasant. What makes him different is his personality and honesty. His films are always distinguishable. Both the films he had made are so diverse in all respect.
Q. How did the bit of action with the Alsatian go?
A. This is something very dangerous. I’ve performed many action scenes but this was the deadliest. A dog in the process also injured me. Overall I enjoyed doing it.
Q. Mr. Bachchan and you come together again. How was it acting with him?
A. So far we’ve done at least five films together. The rapport between us is very good. There is so much to learn from him. I really benefit out of it. Working with him excites me.
Q. What about your plunge from action hero to the family man type?
A. I was bored of action and also tired of the tag of action hero. So this is kind of change that I’m experiencing. I enjoy the emotional films. I’ve not bid adieu to action. I would like to balance all kinds of role.
Q. Tell us about your co-star Priyanka?
A. We’ve worked together in many films since her first film. She is making it to the top. She is a very dedicated and talented artiste.
Q. Which your favourite song from the soundtrack?
A. Undoubtedly the holi song.
Q. What is your next plan?
A. To do more films here.
Q. You’ve taken the distribution of the film.
A. I wanted to dedicate the film to my father. This is a kind of tribute I want to pay to him.

* Tanisha says no to Sammir...
It has happened a second time. Tanisha was supposed to start her career with the Rajshris opposite Sammir Dattani in Uff…Kya Jadoo Mohabbat Hai.
That didn’t work out. Then, she was all set to serenade Sammir a second time in Chicago-based producer Masood Ali’s film which was supposed to be shot in a start-to-finish schedule from mid-June.
But Tanisha has opted out of the film and chosen Uday Chopra over Sammir Dattani.
Doing a last-minute volte-face, she has chosen to do a Yashraj Film with Uday in Canada during the time when she was supposed to be shooting with Sammir in the US. This leaves Masood Ali’s project heroine-less at the eleventh hour.
Surprisingly, Dattani is far from resentful regarding Tanisha’s turn-around. “Of course, she should do the Yash Raj film over my project. If I were in her place, I’d do the same. It’s my dream to work in a Yashraj film. I’m sure it will happen soon. I admire Mr Yash Chopra and Aditya a helluva lot.”
And what’s the Yashraj project that Tanisha has chosen? It marks the return of Arjun Sablok who directed Na Tum Jano Na Hum with Hrithik Roshan and Esha Deol three years ago.
“It wasn’t a very happy experience for me. If I had made Na Tum Jano Na Hum for Yashraj Films, it would’ve rocked. I haven’t met a single person who doesn’t love the film.
That’s why I’m glad to be back with Yashraj Films. I know my film’s future is ensured. The biggest mistake of my life was to leave Yashraj productions. Now I’m back where I belong.”
Why the long gap between his two films?
Explains Arjun, “I’ve been in-charge of Yashraj’s ad cell for quite some time, made the popular ads for Hajmola and Dabur with Mr Bachchan and Rani. I also shot the Dhoom video with Tata Young.
When Adi suggested I write a script for Uday, I immediately thought of a romantic comedy about two absolutely mismatched souls.
Trust me, even if Uday wasn’t a Chopra, I’d still cast him as my protagonist, Neel. And Tanisha fits the role of the female protagonist Nicky to perfection. I can’t see any other actors in my film.”
Did it hurt to see other Yashraj protégés like Kunal Kohli and Sanjay Gadhvi race past him? “I can’t say it didn’t hurt.
But everything in life has a reason. I think Kunal and Sanjay have done a fab job in Hum Tum and Dhoom. It’s all karma. I think the time is right for me to make my second film. It couldn’t have happened earlier or later.”
Arjun shoots his film in his hometown Vancouver from June 15. “We wrap up in one schedule.
Apart from Uday and Tanisha, the rest of the cast will comprise completely new faces. It’s a film where I want to project a certain freshness. Even Salim-Suleiman’s music exudes that ‘wow-isn’t-that-something’ appeal.”

* What's uncool about Tusshar?
By IndiaFM News Bureau, May 07th, 2005 - 1045 hrs IST
Suddenly whatever the foursome say or do, is Kool. Since there's been an overkill of the cool bit, we thought why not turn tables and give you the dirt. In a chit-o-chat with Tusshar we asked the petite actor to tell us an uncool thing that happened to him. And this is what the Khakhee kid told us, “Okay this is kind of embarrassing…” The more embarrassing, the better his uncool quotient gets, we humor him. “Right!” he rues. “This happened when I was a kid. There was this one time when my family had taken me & Ekta to US, Disneyland. And I somehow got separated from them” he recollects.
“Unfamiliar place and faces, I was lost like crazy!” he says giving a dumbfound expression. “There was a superfast train running between the amusement park and the hotel that we were put up at. I had half a mind to catch it but then decided against it, simply because I couldn't gather the guts to. So now all I did was stand there and search the crowds for my parents. After 15 minutes, I gave up that too, now desperately hoping that if not I, hope they find me!” Tusshar smiles. “And as if answering my prayers, I felt someone tap my shoulder, and I turned to see my Dad! I was so relieved that moment. I remember Dad telling me on our way back that when they stopped at a nearby stall to pick up food did they realize that I wasn't with them, and he came running back to fetch me. That was pretty uncool!” Tusshar signs off.
* When Sushmita broke down…
By IndiaFM News Bureau, May 09th, 2005 - 1030 hrs IST
“Miss Sen has become a bit shameless of late and says that my performance in Main Aisa Hi Hoon is the best that you have seen” declares Sushmita in a divaesque manner. 'Lady, you have got yourself into trouble, because we aren't leaving this place without a chunky bit about your role', we chide her. “Why compromise for only a chunk, you can have much more. I love my role to death and will tell you as much as it takes to keep your copy going” she smiles. The lady is excited like nothing else.
“Okay jaaneman, here it is. (yeah, that's how she addresses people in general) I play this hard boiled lawyer, Neeti Khanna who is fiercely ambitious and unapologetic about it. In the bargain, she begins to overlook her domestic responsibilities and her family takes a backseat. But so career-driven is she that, she is blind to her family hurting” Sush explains.
“Its here that she takes on Indraneel's case to restore him the custody of his child. During this particular phase, Neeti is disarmed by the man's love for his child and she gets in touch with her finer self” Sush explains us with atmost sensitivity. “And there is this particular 400 feet courtroom sequence where my character breaks down and says, 'Tumhe takleef hoti hain to saara Shimla court aake khada ho jata hain, mujhe takleef hoti hain toh, ek aadmi khada nahi hota'. It is the most beautiful line I have ever delivered in a film” flags the stunner.

* Shah Rukh shy of seeing himself on screen!
12th May 2005 20.25 IST
By Aparajita Ghosh
Strange but it is true. The flamboyant superstar of Bollywood feels shy when he sees his own movies.
Shah Rukh Khan ’s movie Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge has created history by becoming the longest running Indian film. It has been in theatres for about 500 weeks and is expected to run at least six more months after which it would complete 10 years of screening at cinema halls.
Over this time, millions of people from various parts of the world have seen the movie. And some have seen it many times repeatedly.
But not Shah Rukh. He has seen the movie only thrice and that too a long time back. And now when the film is celebrating its 500 weeks of run, SRK plans to see it once more with his kids.
An entertainment website quotes SRK as saying: “I'll watch it (DDLJ) with my kids Aryan and Suhana. They've seen bits and pieces of the film on TV. But soon, I'll watch the DVD with them.”
SRK also added that he felt shy to see his own movies. He said: “I am not so self indulgent and I feel shy seeing myself on screen.”
Next month, DDLJ will be released in selected multiplexes. Plans are also afoot to release a double DVD with unreleased visuals, behind-the-scenes footage and the premiere of the film.
DDLJ was the directorial debut of Aditya Chopra. The film starred SRK with Kajol . Other actors in the movie include Amrish Puri, Farida Jalal, Anupam Kher and Parmeeet Sethi.

* Priyanka is new Umrao Jaan!
It’s finally happening. After months of exile thanks to the raw deal given to his war opus LOC, J P Dutta is back in business.
The movie mogul is ready to make two new films, both women-centric, that go back to an era and aura that most thought had been banished by a generation fed only candy floss and sugar-coated stories.
The first project is a brand new rendering of Muzaffar Ali’s classic epic Umrao Jaan. Interestingly, it will feature Priyanka Chopra in the role that Rekha immortalised in the 1981 classic.
Why is he remaking Umrao Jaan? J P says, “After making war films where the boys stole the show and the girls got anxious in the background, I thought it was time to let the women come to the forefront.”
Why Priyanka? “Among the current heroines, I think she has the ‘It’ factor. She’s sensuous, graceful and a very good Kathak dancer. If she watches her steps, the sky’s the limit for her.”
Initially, Priyanka was jittery about taking on such a complex role, that too one taken to dizzying heights of nostalgic glamour by Rekha.
“But I convinced her that she had it in her. Priyanka is an extremely focused girl. She knows exactly what is right for her. I’ll make sure Priyanka is projected in a way that taps her full potential,” says Dutta.
J P hopes to start shooting Umrao Jaan in October. “My father (veteran writer-director O P Dutta) wrote the script 20 years ago. So I’ve been waiting to start Umrao Jaan for many years,” he says.
How will it be different from Muzaffar Ali’s film? “As different as Muzaffar Ali and J P Dutta are as filmmakers. Priyanka as Umrao Jaan will be a completely different experience from Rekha,” he adds.
* It is an honour for Aishwarya
She has never sounded happier. Talking nineteen to the dozen after inaugurating the 58th Cannes film festival, Aishwarya Rai also sounded busy. "It's been a hectic but finally very satisfying schedule," she said on the phone from Cannes.
"I'm very happy to be here. It's always a great pleasure and honour to represent my country for an occasion as special as the Cannes film festival. I'm flooded with memories. Two years ago, I was on the jury. And then before that Sanjay (Bhansali), Shah Rukh and I were in Cannes for a very special screening of 'Devdas' . Each visit to Cannes has been an occasion for me." This time Ash was at the prestigious festival to declare the event officially open. "It was very simple. I just said one line and so did director Alexander Payne... and it was on."
Aishwarya now leaves for London to shoot her new film, Jagmohan Mundhra's "Provoked". What amazes Ash is the growing power and glory of Indian cinema in the West.
"Indian cinema has begun to be recognised globally. And it's very important for us to make our presence felt at important events such as Cannes. I feel there should be more Indian representation at festivals. India is producing such a large cross section of films. We need to be part of world cinema, and we need to do that now."

“Aish and Vivek's marriage plan?”
The reports and the counter reports of a marriage plan of actress Aishwarya Rai with actor Vivek Oberoi are creating more and more confusion. In a recent interview to a TV channel, Vivek Oberoi was reported to have said that he would certainly marry Aishwarya Rai. Before this report reached Aish, the said report was described as a twist. Fortunately, Aish has not reacted to this interview of Vivek. She is keeping quiet. However, industry sources say that there is no chance of their marriage. These sources say that Aish is on cloud nine in her career whereas Vivek is lying on the ground as on today. Then, how can Aish think of marrying Vivek? Moreover, they argue that a multi-millionaire is already wooing her, and trying to satisfy her. Aish has asked this businessman to divorce his first wife. The businessman has allegedly offered a huge sum of Rs 3000 million to his wife for agreeing to divorce.
“Fardeen, Natasha betrothal today”
Actor Fardeen Khan is finally marrying his fiancée Natasha Madhwani. The betrothal ceremony will take place in London today. As reported in these columns earlier, Fardeen Khan's fiancée is none other than yesteryears' actress Mumtaz's daughter who is living in London with her husband Mayur Madhwani, a businessman. The two families are likely to fix the date of the Fardeen- Natasha marriage today. Both Fardeen and Natasha are very excited now as their romantic affair is finally taking the right shape into their marriage. This news has belied all the myths created in a section of the media that their affair has turned sour.
“Yana Gupta prefers stage shows”
The 'Dum's item girl Yana Gupta neither benefited the producers nor the artists from her performance in the movie. However, she has made a place for herself by doing the item dance 'Babuji Zara Dheere Chalo..'. This item number has definitely shot her to fame inasmuch as she is always occupied with the stage shows. She claims that she has no time to spare for giving dates to moviemakers because of her preoccupation with stage shows. Her charges for stage shows are too high. She was recently near Delhi, and was asked as to why she is missing in movies. Yana said, " I am associated with Shah Rukh's music troupe as well as such other groups of Mumbai, and their music shows are held throughout the year. So, I keep very busy. Moreover, I earn more through these shows in a shorter time than in movies."
“Filmi stunts for publicity”
The film industry is known for creating publicity stunts. Everyone related to the industry irrespective of the fact that he is a director or an actor or involved in its promotion, takes shelter under publicity stunts or gimmicks. During the shoot of Vipul Shah's movie starring Priyanka Chopra, it was alleged that Priyanka Chopra has had a serious electricity shock while she was picturizing the song "Do me a favor -Let's play Holi". She was removed to the hospital. However, she did come for the next day shoot at the sets. This is said to be false. Priyanka had suffered a minor shock though, and a visiting doctor had attended her at the sets. All the rumor of a serious shock followed by a hospital visit were publicity gimmicks to attract huge sympathy crowds for the movie.

* RAMU'S 'D' PROMISES ALL THE RIGHT PUNCHES
By Aira
Movie Talk
Ram Gopal Varma these days is certainly sticking to his core areas -- horror films or underworld films. With an overdose of horror flicks, he is preparing for the release of his ambitious project, 'D'. A week ago, Varma organized a special trial-run of the film for Indian distributors, to gauge their response. And from the looks of it, 'D' promises to pack in all the right punches just like Ramu's earlier underworld films, 'Satya' and 'Company'.
'D' belongs to the genre of the underworld and its mechanics that Ram Gopal Varma has now come to master. The film, directed by Vishram Sawant, is said to be a prequel to Varma's 'Company', where the characterization of Mallik and Chandu, bore strong comparisons to India's underworld don's Dawood and Chhota Shakeel. "It's not fair to compare my other two films with 'D'. Vishram has directed it, so it has been treated very differently. But yes, all underworld subjects may look a little similar, but I am sure once you see it, you'll realize the differences," says Ramu.
A much awaited film, 'D' will see a new actor, Randeep Hooda, making a screen debut in the role of Deshu, who has taken a conscious career decision of playing the role of a criminal. "I have been doing some theatre before 'D'. But, it has been an absolute honor to work with the factory and that too of Ramuji. 'Satya' and 'Company' are two films which are so real and true to life that if 'D' is even somewhere close to it, I will be happy. I am not concerned about the comparisons with these two films, as it will be compared to some great work," says a very happy Hooda.
For Vishram, who has been an assistant to Ram Gopal Varma, always wanted to do an underworld film. "The subject always fascinated me. It's just so real that it blows your mind. As for why we cast Randeep is that he is young, new and has a theatre background. His looks are that of a young man who can be misled and who can do something in the heat of the moment."
The film also stars Chunkey Pandey who will be seen after a long time on the big screen. And the 'Company's Khallas girl Isha Koppikar will also be seen in the film. Will she be doing another Khallas number or will she have a more fleshed out role than that? You'll have to wait for a couple of days as 'D' has been tentatively scheduled for the May 20 release.

* An Exclusive Look at 'Paheli'
By Judi Silva ©2005 Bollyvista.com
“Credits”
Producer/s: Red Chillies Entertainment - Shah Rukh Khan
Director: Amol Palekar
Cast: Shah Rukh Khan, Rani Mukherjee, Juhi Chawla, Sunil Shetty and Amitabh Bachchan
Music: MM Kreem
Rajasthan's acclaimed Sahitya Akademi winner, author Vijaydan Detha is one of the leading short story writers in India today. One of his longer short stories, 'Dohrijoon' (A Double Life) has been published (in Hindi) in the form of two volumes entitled 'Uijhan' and 'Duvidha'.
Duvidha (a retold Rajasthani folktale), the legendary Rajasthani love story , in particular is where Amol Palekar's newest film, 'Paheli' draws its inspiration. Duvidha is a folk tale, a unique love story full of colour and exuberance," says Palekar. Representing a major break from the past, it stars Shah Rukh Khan and Rani Mukherjee as the lead characters. 'Paheli' also includes Amitabh Bachchan, Juhi Chawla and Sunil Shetty in special appearances.
Red Chillies Entertainment's Gauri Khan is producing the film, which boasts of elaborate sets, including a recreated sprawling haveli from the Rajasthani area of Navalgad, sync sound (not dubbing) and special effects, thanks to her extremely techno-savvy husband.
One may question though, as to whether 'Paheli' is just a remake of the 1973 Mani Kaul film entitled ' Duvidha'. Amol assures us that his 'Paheli' and Kaul's 'Duvidha' are as different from each other as are the directors themselves. Anyone who knows Palekar knows that he loves to experiment with various themes, so a year of research between he and the film's scriptwriter Sandhya Gokhale took place even before the early stages of the 'Paheli' had their start. In fact, the name of the film had been changed several times before the name 'Paheli' (riddle) was finalized. “Each subject demands it's own parameters and treatment. I don’t want to make films based on a calculated formulae or preset proposals ruled by market demands,” he says
The basic storyline (since neither Palekar nor Khan understandable want to reveal any major details) is how a ghost (not the scary kind but a rather romantic one) played by Shah Rukh (who is sporting a Rajasthani pagdi and a moustache), impersonates the husband of a village girl named Lachchi (Rani). Lachchi finds out, all too soon (the day after they are married) that her ideas about love, marriage and commitment are very different than those of the man she married. What Palekar will divulge is that "It's about a woman's right to choose—a recurring theme in my films."
There are certain beliefs that are purposefully interjected throughout the story as well. The portrayal of the irony of human life through the complexities of the situations, which the various characters find themselves in, stands out the most. Life cannot be taken at face value. In other words, just because something is socially acceptable, doesn’t make it right or fair. We can’t always have what we want in life and reality hits hard when what we think should be the outcome in any given situation isn’t how things necessarily play out.
As a director, Amol Palekar sought to achieve a blend of the so-called parallel and mainstream cinema with 'Paheli'. Without elaborating on all that these labels imply he makes the point that from experience, he has found the audience always welcomes meaningful cinema. One need not sacrifice substance or content in order to make a commercially viable piece of celluloid.
To prove this point, he promises that both the sights and sounds of 'Paheli' will excite the senses. The colourful desert backdrop, the bright Rajasthani costumes, coupled with six wonderful songs, showcasing traditional Rajasthani instruments, such as the ravanhatta and alguja and a puppet show give it an unusual folktale feeling. This, plus the fact that the film was shot in Mumbai and Rajasthan in a mere 43 days, show that Palekar’s interpretation and scale are obviously unique.
Given all of the above 'content and substance', SRK was so impressed that he not only took to acting in the film but he was the one who offered to produce it. Speaking of being impressed, Big B was also - enough to offer Palekar a chance don the directorial cloak for a film under his AB Corp banner! Well-done Amol! Sounds like 'Paheli' is a film we won’t want to miss for many reasons!

* When a 10-year-old romance meets a Punjabi Jatt and a revolutionary Bong
By Joginder Tuteja ©2005 Bollyvista.com
After an entertaining (and the most profitable) month for Bollywood behind us, with successes in the shape of Lucky, Waqt, Kaal and Kya Kool Hai Hum, this summer indeed looks cool (As predicted in our recent feature - 'This Summer will be Cool'). With optimism on a high and vigor renewed, Bollywood fans look forward to rest of the summer with flicks like 'Bachke Rehna Re Baba', 'Naina', 'Nazar', 'Bunty Aur Babli', 'Parineeta', 'Silsiilay', 'Maine Pyaar Kyo Kiya', 'D', 'Paheli', 'Sarkaar' and many more. But first of all, get set for one of the most exciting weekends of this year- that of Friday - the 13th of May - when a 10 year old romance stands up in the face of opposition of a Punjabi Jatt and a revolutionary Bong!
Yes, I am talking about the love story of Raj and Simran who met on a train 500 weeks back. The train is still chugging along in Maratha Mandir, Mumbai every day after Amrish Puri Saab gives his nod of approval in three simple words - 'Jaa Simran Jaa'. To join the celebrations and fall in love (yet again), the epic love story 'Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge' by Aditya Chopra releases all over India once more. No one would have imagined in their wildest dreams in 1995 that when the movie would be re-released, it would come face to face with Sunny paaji's comic-thriller 'Jo Bole So Nihal' and Shyam Benegal's historic epic 'Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose'. And how much do we love this weekend treat when all the three releases seem pretty inviting!
What's the magic behind DDLJ? Why does it still hold immeasurable charm when a generation has passed through? Why the romantic background music does make your heart skip a beat? Why does 'Tujhe Dekha To Yeh Jaana Sanam' still find a position in one's list of all time love duets? Well, thousands of articles have been written around this and books have been dedicated to the movie, so saying something more would be just stating the obvious. But the fact is that this is the movie I went out to see when I was a college-going kid. The first time I saw it' it was with a couple of friends. The movie turned out to be 'Wow!' and I thought that watching DDLJ would be a good idea for a date. So that's why I went the second time. And then I wondered' why not have a clean family outing with my parents. So third trip it was! And then the fourth and the fifth and many more before I stopped counting.
And those were the days when there were no multiplexes with a show after every hour to choose from. Neither was there a multiplex every 2 miles in a neighborhood shopping mall. One had to choose from a conventional 12-3-6-9 routine and get tickets after spending hours in queues! And did I (or anyone else for this matter) mind that?! Naah!
The same sentiment is shared by thousands of others (at least from my generation), who now are in their late twenties, early thirties and want to relive the moments of togetherness with their better halves. DDLJ is destined to pull in audiences in big numbers for the sheer magic of nostalgia (even the recent polls on websites/newspapers say so!). So what if you remember each and every dialogue of the movie? So what if the movie has a run on the small screen practically every month? So what if every cool dude possesses the movie's DVD? DDLJ is still 'THE DDLJ' when it comes to a cinematic experience. And don't the recent twin-successes of 'Sholay' and 'Mughal-E-Azam', that were re-released after numerous decades, prove the point.
So, does this anticipated heavy rush to the theatres for 'DDLJ' turn out to be a challenge for 'JBSN' and 'Bose'? Nope, that doesn't appear to be the case. Why? Because the number of prints released for 'JBSN' and 'Bose' is extremely high when compared to 'DDLJ' that is having a selected release. That means that more audiences and hence more moolah! Also, given the merits of both movies, they too should find a well-deserved audience. Sunny paaji fans would like to see another hit from him after 'Gadar', 'Indian' and 'The Hero', while those looking for a quick journey into history would vouch for Shyam Benegal's cinematic take on Netaji's life.
Bose, Nihal, Raj - it couldn't have been a better weekend for a movie lover than this. Let a decade old romance come face to face with a roaring Jatt and an intelligent Bong!

MUMBAI: Bollywood's Mallika Sherawat, known for skin flashing roles and bold quotes, is hoping that her presence with Hollywood star Jackie Chan at the Cannes film festival will open the doors in Hollywood.
Mallika, who made her debut two years back in Bollywood as a hot sexy actress in an adulterous thriller called Murder, will attend the annual Cannes festival with Chan to promote their new film, The Myth.
Sherawat plays the role of an Indian princess who is rescued by Chan.
"Inshallah (God willing), I will make it in Hollywood and hope to get more international projects soon," Sherawat said as she prepared to leave for Cannes later this week.
"Everyone knows that I come from a small town in Haryana state and to make it big in the international arena you need someone to guide you," she said.
"I am grateful to Jackie Chan for this opportunity."
Sherawat is also keen to rub shoulders with Hollywood biggies like Salma Hayek and Bruce Willis at Cannes.
Several Indian actresses will be at the festival this year including Nandita Das, who is one of the jury members at the 58th Cannes festival.

Interview # 29
This Interview is from “www.santabanta.com”
* Interview: Vidhu Vinod Chopra
“I cannot handle star tantrums: Vidhu Vinod Chopra”
Writer, director, producer and the man behind films as varied as "Khamosh" and "Munnabhai M.B.B.S.", Vidhu Vinod Chopra sincerely believes he serves an "important function of bringing quality back to Indian cinema".
And his latest "Parineeta", a remake of the Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay classic, is one example of that, says the filmmaker, who is in the midst of promoting his newest venture. The film stars Sanjay Dutt, Saif Ali Khan, Vidya Balan, Diya Mirza and Raima Sen.
He is also planning his next directorial project "Yagna", shooting of which begins once he returns to India.
That film too will star Saif Ali Khan because, as Chopra says, he is a gentleman actor. Quite like Sanjay Dutt, who was in Chopra's "Mission Kashmir" and then in the hit "Munnabhai". "I like gentleman actors... I cannot handle stars with tantrums," says the maker of films like "Parinda" and "Kareeb".
With nine films to his credit since he began his career in 1977 with "Murder at Monkey Hill" as his diploma film at the Film Institute of India, Pune. Chopra has been considered an unconventional filmmaker within the mainstream Bollywood context.
After directing seven films and one documentary, including "1942: A Love Story" and "An Encounter with Faces" (an Oscar nominated documentary), Chopra turned a writer and producer with "Munnabhai M.B.B.S.", one of the biggest hits of 2003.
He says "Munnabhai" was a lot of hard work, but it paid off. "People saw it for what it was, as a film with all the right buttons". Negotiations are also on for the Hollywood version of "Munnabhai" called "Gangsta MD".
Chopra spoke to us during a brief visit to New York earlier this week.
Excerpts:
Q: Your latest film is based on a great Bengali classic by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay. One of the constant observations one encounters while talking to Indian filmmakers is that while technologically we have advanced dramatically, in terms of written material we have not really progressed. Do you agree? If yes, why is that so?
A: Most Indian filmmakers do not work as hard on the script as say they would who would star in their film. In my company we have always paid the most attention to the script. "Parineeta" is an example of that. It took me a year-and-a-half to complete the adaptation of a classic. It was very tough to condense the novel into a two-hour film.
While working on "Munnabhai M.B.B.S." we delayed it for a long time because we were not happy with the screenplay. In Hindi cinema we have what are called proposals, which are mainly about stars and where a movie should be shot but hardly any attention is paid to the screenplay or script.
Q: Why "Parineeta" and why now?
A: I have been fascinated with "Parineeta" the novel since the age of 10 while growing up in Kashmir. I am making it now because I was waiting for the right team. We have Pradeep Sarkar as director and Shantanu Moitra as music composer. Both are Bengalis and bring an authentic feel to the film. The whole emphasis has been to make everything look authentic. Rather than shooting in a studio in Mumbai we shot in Kolkata for a little over 60 days. The film looks very real. The film's music is amazing. We released it a week ago and it is already topping the charts.
Q: What is that struck you the most about the novel by the great Bengali writer Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay?
A: "Parineeta" is one of Saratbabu's happier works. It is a very simple and very romantic story.
Q: After "Munnabhai" you seem to have taken to Sanjay Dutt.
A: I like gentleman actors. Sanjay Dutt is a gentleman actor. I think Saif Ali Khan is a gentleman actor. He is in "Parineeta" and I am repeating him in "Yagna". I cannot handle stars with tantrums.
Q: "Munnabhai M.B.B.S." must rank as one of the truly original written materials in recent times.
A: Yes, "Munnabhai" was a lot of hard work and it paid off. People saw it for what it was, as a film with all the right buttons.
Q: There has been talk about the Hollywood version of "Munnabhai" called "Gangsta MD". What is happening on that front?
A: We are in the middle of negotiations on that.
Q: How valid do you think is the growing perception that Indian cinema is now cracking the mainstream Western markets?
A: I think we are slowly getting there. There is growing consciousness about Indian cinema.
Q: Kashmir has been a special part of your life. Would you like to talk about it?
A: Yes, I grew up in Kashmir. That is where I am from. I am always interested in Kashmir. When an opportunity presented I made "Mission Kashmir". In the future too I would like to base a film there.
Q: Between being a writer, producer and director where do you see yourself most realised?
A: As a director, I think. I believe I serve an important function in the Indian film industry of bringing quality back to cinema. "Parineeta" is an example of that.

* Interview: Nandita Das
“ Nandita Das: 'Forgive me if I'm not wearing designer wear at Cannes…' ”
MADHUREETA MUKHERJEE
INDIATIMES MOVIES
Q. In 2003 Aishwarya Rai graced the Cannes jury; how does it feel being on the same pedestal this year?
A. “I am truly excited, thrilled and honoured. This came out of the blue! It wasn’t even in my realm of imagination. I think people around are more surprised than I am.”
Q. Why do you think they selected you out of a host of other popular actors in the country?
A. “That’s something you’ll have to ask them. I really don’t know what the criteria are. It would be incorrect for me to analyse that and immodest on my part to take away their credibility, of doing the right thing. I’m sure there was a strong basis for their choice.”
Q. What do you think of the Indian films that have been selected for Cannes in previous years?
A. “I remember last year, ‘Devdas’ was screened at Cannes. But there are various segments, and I don’t think the film was in the competition section of the festival; in that category, many films can enter from various regions. To be honest, I’ve not had the time to delve into the workings of the festival, as I’ve been travelling for the last few months. The jury is going there two days prior to the event, to understand the structure and the mechanics of the awards. Film is such a vast and diverse medium; it would also be interesting to interact with people from different schools of cinema, form your own opinions and then come to a common decision.”
Q. Other than being a congregation of the world’s best cinema, isn’t Cannes all about a media circus, with a high glamour quotient?
A. “That’s the scary part - it’s also like a media congregation. The media over-hype and glamour over-drive can often belittle the very purpose of the festival. I know that an event like this, that involves celebrities and personalities from across the globe, will attract a lot of attention and, with it, the glamour quotient comes along. But using reams of print space, writing about the fashion at Cannes is quite baseless.”
Q. Last year Aishwarya received a lot of flak for her clothes at Cannes; what will your wardrobe look like?
A. “I understand that at some level you are representing a country and you need to live up to that, but I will still be myself and within that, do the best I can. It’s not like I’m going to go overboard stocking up with outfits from everywhere. I’ll see what’s in my wardrobe, and some designer friends will help me put something together. I’ve been travelling and I have only six days before I leave, and a hundred other things to do, so my clothes for the event are not the only things on my mind. I hope the media will not focus so much on my clothes and forgive me if they’re not typical, high-fashion designer wear. There’s a lot of responsibility attached to this event and, by getting into any kind of controversy before it, or to talking about my wardrobe, will take away from the essence of the whole.”
Q. Any Indian film you think should have been at the festival this year?
A. “I can’t exactly comment on that; I can say something only if I’m totally familiar with all the films that go there, and their selection process. A selection is, after all, the people’s opinion, so there are always chances that a prospective film has been left out. Besides, the fact that no Indian film is selected for Cannes this year should make us reflect on whether we are making quality films in our industry, to begin with. There’s also a possibility that some good small-budget films don’t even have the means and ability to reach Cannes. I don’t know the others on the jury personally. I’m familiar with some of their work; some I’m not aware of. And being an actor and as aspiring director, I’ll take this as a learning experience at different levels.”

Interview # 31
This Interview is from “www.filmfare.com”
* Interview: Preity Zinta
“Preity Zinta :I Want, You Want. Lust Is So Impersonal”
“Someone get me food! Any food!” Preity Zinta screams. She’s been slaving away for an ad shoot all day, she’s tired, she’s mighty hungry, and we’re asking to her to do a photo shoot? Not until she’s eaten, she declares—“Can’t you hear my stomach growling?’
I need to keep her distracted till her pizza arrives, so we get talking. I feed her with words instead. And she readily bites into them.
“Stuck on romance and bubblegum”
Romance is like those glares you wear on a hot sunny day—they keep the harsh reality of life out of your eyes. That’s my idea of romance. I’ve never had any bubblegum romances though. I had no time for them because I got too busy with my career by the time I was in my late teens and I had other issues to look at.
But I have to add that I love bubblegum, I love blowing those huge balloons. It’s the one thing my mother hated the most when I was a kid because it’d be terrible, terrible, terrible when it got stuck in my hair. Sometimes it would get stuck on my clothes too and that can be very difficult to remove. So here’s my bubblegum tip: Turn the garment inside out, put a piece of cloth over the bubblegum and iron over it. Try it, it works!
“Lust and found”
If you look at lust through the eyes of society, it’s very negative. If you look at it just as an instinct, then there’s nothing wrong with it. If people indulge in it, to each their own. And if I indulged in lust, I wouldn’t tell you! But lust is not something I’d hold a flag for. It is so impersonal; no feelings are involved. It’s just I want and you want. There’s no feeling of belonging, as there is with love.
“Marriage should be forever”
Yes, I’m dating Ness Wadia. But please don't talk about marriage. Am I ready for marriage? I’m only ready for a photo shoot right now!
Seriously, marriage is a coming together of two different ways of life, of two minds and souls and I would like to get married to someone I can share my silences with. I would think seriously about marriage when I want to have children and I believe it’s very important to have a secure background for your children. So when marriage happens to me, I would like it to happen just once. I hope it lasts forever. Because I’m a very, very loyal person and commitment is very, very important for me.
“Anger management”
Anger is something that I need to control. My blood pressure can shoot up in two seconds flat, especially when it’s very, very hot! I simply can’t take the heat and it makes me so short-tempered.
What else gets me angry? Laziness. When people take me for a ride or take me for granted. But what makes me really mad is when someone tells me, “You’re a film star, you can afford it. So pay me more.” I hate it when people try to con me that way.
“Preity the party animal”
Very early on in my career, I’d really go out and party hard even when I had to work the next day, but I can’t do it now because the stakes are too high. I can’t be frivolous about what I’m doing especially when I’m doing only one film at a time. Now I like to party only when I’m not working the next day and there is no work tension and I’m not tired. If I’m tired, partying can be excruciating because I’m dying slowly, very slowly.
For me, partying doesn’t always mean going to a big do. Meeting up with six or seven friends and chatting about life can also be a swinging party. Partying is more a frame of mind than a definition.
I travel a lot and I’ve discovered partying can be great fun when you go to an absolutely new town or city. It’s a great way of understanding local culture, finding out how people react to different situations.
“Hits, flops & being happy for others”
Hits make you forget all the hard work and the negativity that went into making a movie. They make you forget the fight you had with somebody on the sets. It’s very, very nice to have a hit. And it’s equally nice to want a hit for someone else. When you’ve tasted success, you’re feeling so good that it automatically makes you magnanimous. And you wish the same for others too. When I first tasted success, I used to wonder why people weren’t happy for me. So now, when someone has a hit or is doing well for themselves, I tell myself to feel happy for them.
Flops are as important as hits... and this is not fake philosophy. Just as there is male and female, yin and yang, there’s success and failure. And you can’t always succeed in life. Flops teach you to hold your head high even as they make you see your mistakes more clearly. They teach you more about life than a hit would. And they show you who your true friends are.
“Bubbly ... BAH!”
I’ve finally learnt to accept that people are going to call me bubbly all my life, no matter what. It’s used to bug me like crazy earlier and I’d scream at anyone who used it for me. But not any more. I recently did an interview where this lady said, ‘You’re so bubbly. How do you manage that?’ Manage? What’s to manage? I don’t “manage” anything. I basically have a very positive attitude towards life, I have the ability to smile in the face of adversity. Nothing really gets me down. As the saying goes, your attitude determines your altitude.

* SRK-Amol problems?
By Our Correspondent ©2005 Bollyvista.com
SRK denies having had any creative problems with his director Amol Palekar ('Paheli') and the latter maintains that SRK was a wonderful producer and actor to have around. From what we hear, this is far from reality. The producer-actor and director are said to have been at major loggerheads with each other during the shoot of this film, which is based on a novel called 'Duvidha' by Vijaydan Detha.
Broadly, the film is about Lachchi (Rani Mukherji) falling in love with her husband's (Shah Rukh Khan) ghost (and vice versa), also played by Shah Rukh Khan, much to the surprise of her husband when he returns after his business visit. The story deals with resolving the issue on who is real and who is ghostly, and of course, how Lachchi has to choose between the ghost's eternal love and her husband's insensitive monotone. 'Paheli' will release on June 17th.

* 'JO BOLE SO NIHAL' IS NOT A RELIGIOUS MOVIE
By Eye TV India Bureau
In the News
Rahul Rawail, the director of 'Jo Bole So Nihal', has claimed that his movie is not religious. However, this is neither to hurt the feelings of the followers of any religion nor their religion. "So far, the title of the movie is concerned, it is based on the lead character's name-Nihaal Singh. This is a good natured person who enjoys helping others, and believes that his Wahe Guru would show the right path to every one. Hence I titled this movie after him." He said this to Smashits during his promotional visit to a theatre in Noida. He was accompanied by his cast comprising lead actor Sunny Deol, singer-turned-actor Kamaal Khan playing a villain in the movie, and producer Babloo Pachisia.
Rawail said that Sunny, known as an action actor, may shock the viewers by his performance in an entertainer like this movie. He has changed his image. Sunny attributes the delay and the gap of a year in its completion to his back ache. "Now, I am absolutely healthy." When asked if he had faced any difficulty in his changed image in this movie, Sunny said, "Since I hail from Punjab, I had no problem in acting as a turbaned Sikh policeman ( hawaldar). Moreover, I have acted in 'Gadar' and 'Border' as a Sikh." He didn't like the movie to be categorized though. "This has action, emotions and comedy - all in one. So, it can be described as an entertainer."
The singer of 'Oh, oh, Jaane Jaana', Kamaal Khan has begun his innings as an actor, rather as a villain. Kamal Khan is proud that he got a chance to act with a famous actor like Sunny Deol and an equally well known director Rahul Rawail in their movie. When asked how he accepted to begin his career as a villain, he quipped, "How could I say no to Rawail who provided me an opportunity to work with him. Besides, I am an actor only. It hardly matters what role I play. " The movie will be released on May 13th, Rawail announced to the gathering.
'Jo Bole So Nihaal' is about a guy who has to struggle hard and long to prove his innocence. He is accused of a crime for which he is not aware. Nihaal Singh played by matinee idol of Hindi filmgoers Sunny Deol has opted to join the Police Department in Punjab. Although not a brilliant young man, nobody can cast aspersion on his character and integrity. He is known for his devotion to duty and honesty, a rare characteristic in the corruption ridden department where most of his junior and senior colleagues are busy making money by hook or crook.
But the life of the deeply religious and innocent cop undergoes a sea change when he chances to meet a dreaded criminal and international terrorist. He is called Romeo played by Kamaal Khan. He takes advantage of the innocence and honesty of Nihaal Singh and escapes from the Police. An ambitious mercenary, Romeo starts terrorism and introduces himself as Nihaal Singh after committing crimes. Sunny is suspended from the service to which he is devoted. He and his family are ridiculed. They face the wrath of the entire village. They are excommunicated. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) takes over investigation of Romea alias Nihaal Singh.
The movie takes the audience on the streets of New York where the cute and adorable villager from Punjab swings into action to gripple with the heartless mercenary. Like other movies produced in Bollywood this one is also full of actions and reactions.
