* Salman: Love ke liye…

Salman is known for being possessive about his family and close friends. The same applies to his lady love Katrina Kaif! He is protective about her career too. So it's not surprising that the actress has signed only one movie after her failed debut with Kaizad Gustad's Boom. Her latest film is Maine Pyar Kyun Kiya with Salman Khan and Sohail Khan, which is Sohail Khan production. And it came as a surprise when she signed a film outside the home banner. She has just accepted to act along side Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar in the movie Humko Deewana Kar Gaye to be directed by Raj Kanwar. In the film, Khan and Kaif do get to tie the knot but Akshay brings a twist in the tale with his entry in the plot. Akshay Kumar and Salman Khan will be seen together again after Mujhse Shaadi Karogi. The two have also signed Sajid Nadiadwala's next film to be directed by Shirish Kunder.

* Nikki & Neil for Yashraj?

Buzz has it that Yashraj will be focusing on Nikki and Neil next. Well, these are not the names of two newcomers to be introduced by the legendary production house! Nikki & Neil is reportedly the title of the next film from Yashraj. The romantic comedy will be directed by Arjun Sablok and feature Uday Chopra and Tanisha in the lead. Having taken care of Bunty Aur Babli, Adi Chopra will now be focusing on Kunal Kohli's Salaam Namaste and then move on to Nikki and Neil. Yashraj is surely coming up with catchy title, must say!

* Pandey to make comeback!

Ramgopal Varma is known to choose actors carefully and change them according to the requirements and given them new characteristics. “I hope it works with me too”, says Chunkey Pandey, who will be seen in films after a long break in his career. Ramgopal is having Chunkey in his next venture ‘D’, which is a gangster film. Chunkey is Raghav, in the movie, who is a gang- leader and takes Dinu through the steps of the underworld. It so happened that Chunkey got the call on the day of his younger daughter’s naming ceremony. He agreed to do the project without even listening to the narration, as he always wanted to be a gangster. “I would have been a gangster if not an actor”, chuckles the actor. Since, he had to go through a makeover, he himself went to Goa for a holiday to get tanned and also grew his beard. Three weeks later, he walked into Ramgopal’s office only to hear Varma say, “It is as if a real gangster has entered my office!” Now that surely must doubled Chunkey’s joys as well as his confidence!

* Priyanka miffed

Priyanka Chopra is upset with director J P Dutta. It may be known that director JP Dutta had recently announced to the media that he was going to remake Umrao Jaan with Priyanka Chopra in the lead. "I'm still considering the film. I have not signed it," she said. Priyanka is upset about the fact that the director was cashing on her growing popularity as an actress. She is also considering another period film to be made by a prominent director. Meanwhile the only film signed by Priyanka is Pritish Nandy Communications Saheb, Biwi Aur Ghulam. Priyanka seems to be the most rocking star of 2005. "If I'm successful it is partly because of hard work and partly because of luck. I'm lucky to have bagged films from good banners," she said.

* Kalpana turns Kallpana!

After actors like Kareina Kapoor and Tusshar Kapoor, it seems now directors are on their way to change their names for numerological reasons. Latest on the list is director Kalpana Lajmi. She will now spell her name differently. It is something like this: Kallpana G. Lajmi. The director has just completed her latest film Chingari that is about a prostitute and her life. The film stars Sushmita Sen, Anuj Sawhney and Mithun Chakraborty. Let's see if the change actually brings her good luck!

* Ashmit-Riya: Did they do it?

Actor Ashmit Patel's on-screen controversy with Pakistani actress Meera didn't get him anywhere. Now insiders say that the MMS clip of himself and actress Riya Sen in the nude was forwarded to the television channels by him. He apparently did it to teach her a lesson. It is also heard that Patel immediately inquired if the tape would be aired on all the channels. A TV channel source says, "He wasn't even upset that his image would also remain nothing in the eyes of the public. He was very eager to see the clip on screen." When spoken to Patel about the whole affair, he was shocked to hear the accusation. He was at a loss of words. "I don't know what to say. I really don't know how to react," says the actor. The duo had been going around for a year and their relationship came to end when Ashmit came to know that she cheated him. He circulated the clip, which shows him and Sen kissing and indulging in a private act. Reporters say that the clip of Shahid and Kareena was nothing compared to this one. We can hear the conversation and it was worse than a porn film." Lately, the actor could not attend Nazar's premiere as his visa was rejected. Looks like Patel has got himself into real trouble this time!

“Did beauties deceive Akshay?”

Akshay Kumar is known for flirting with girls in the tinsel town. There is a long list of his victims from Shilpa Shetty to Raveena Tandon. However, sources close to Akshay claim the contrary. They blame these Bollywood beauties to deceive Akshay by using him as a stepping-stone in riding the stairs of their careers. How else Akshay had agreed to marry Twinkle Khanna in preference to sexier Shilpa or prettier Raveena? While Akshay looked for a wife to take care of his household, Shilpa and Raveena exploited their proximity to Akshay in building their filmi life, these sources add. So, Akshay quickly married with a simple girl like Twinkle Khanna. Then, Priyanka Chopra pared with him in a number of movies. This has reportedly upset Akshay's wife Twinkle Khanna to the extent that she keeps a strict watch on Akshay's shooting schedule. Some times she visits shooting places too. Priyanka and Akshay have denied all these rumors though. Is Priyanka also using Akshay as a stepping-stone in her career's growth?

“Kareena Kapoor is tense”

Like other actresses-turned-wives Kareena Kapoor is passing through a tense period. Tension is on account of her fiancé Shahid Kapoor as the latter is busy these days in acting in director Vikram Bhatt's ''Deewane Hue Paagal'. Vikram Bhatt and Shahid Kapoor have become very thick. But, this has created a fear in Kareena's mind that her fiancé may go the Vikram way. Vikram is known for his proximity with a number of girls in the recent past.

“Abhishek is averse to dance”

Abhishek Bachchan is moving towards stardom following his spectacular success in 'Dhoom' after a number of flops. However, he has a weakness; he doesn't like to dance, at least in real life, though he has to in the reel life. He is anxiously awaiting the outcome of his 'Bunty Aur Babli' starring Amitabh and Rani Mukherjee that will release on May 27th. Abhishek's next ' Sarkaar' directed by Ram Gopal Verma is also ready for release in June. Besides, his 'Dus' starring Sanjay Dutt, Suniel Shetty, Zayed Khan, Shilpa Shetty and Esha Deol, is also ready for exhibition. Like his father, Abhishek too entered into a hit phase after several flops.

“Darshans promote Amisha now”

Darshan brothers are known for their special liking for Karisma Kapoor in the past. She was noticed in all their publicity materials even at the cost of other actors. However, they seem to have changed their strategy after her marriage. Now, Darshans have replaced Karisma with Amisha Patel. This can be witnessed in their recent promos of 'Mere Jeewan Saathi'. Sources close to Darshan brothers attribute this change to the pressure from their distributors. Others also share this view. According to them, the movie watchers always like to watch glamour in the entertainment industry, and those actresses who have been married, lose their charm, at least among the general audience. That's why the songs picturized on Amisha Patel and Akshay Kumar find more importance in the film's promos, besides their kissing scene. This has certainly made Amisha happy. Is Karisma listening?

“Fardeen: Natasha averse to acting on screen”

As reported earlier, Fardeen Khan is going to marry Natasha soon as they have already been betrothed. We asked Fardeen about his past relations with Natasha at a Mumbai party. Fardeen claimed that he is very happy to turn his childhood friend into a lifelong relationship. He added that they would marry towards the end of this year. When asked if Natasha, daughter of a yesteryears' actress Mumtaz would act in films, Fardeen clarified that she would not enter into films. " Natasha doesn't like to be seen on the screen."

* TWO BACHCHANS' FIRST UNION ON SCREEN LOSES THE BOX OFFICE
By Pankaj Shukla
Critic's I-view

Oye Bubbly, Oye Bubbly, Be My Lover Bubbly... goes the new tagline of the favorite soft drink this season with a lot of fizz as even Big B does a cameo on small screen in one of the ads shot on the theme. But, when it comes to big screen the fizz of the Babli meets Bunty who is trying it very hard to make a name for himself as a solo hero in the Hindi film industry. 'Bunty Aur Babli' also makes the revival of the trend that started way back in 1942 with the first ever super duper hit film 'Kismat' where the lead hero is presented with gray shades.

Dozens of films have been made after that where the hero becomes an anti-hero and makes fool of others to survive in society. He may not be a hard-core criminal but he does not believe in system. Amitabh Bachchan flourished in seventies and eighties doing many of these kinds of roles right from 'Hera Pheri', to 'Mr. Natwarlal', 'Suhag', 'Sholay', and 'Shaan', and lately in 'Bade Miyan Chhote Miyan' in late 90's. The underdog angle presented with the charisma of Big B worked most of the times and even Govinda made it almost to the top by repeating it in films like 'Aankhen', 'Coolie No. 1', 'Hero No. 1' and several others.

So, Natwarlals of Bollywood return with 'Bunty Aur Babli' on screen with Rani reviving the trend of women cheaters a la Hema Malini in 'Seeta Aur Geeta' and Sridevi in 'Chalbaaz'. The film comes at a time when all schools and colleges are closed for summer vacation and there is no competition from any other film during the week. In short, 'Bunty Aur Babli' has all the equations in its favor to hit the bull's eyes, but it has missed the bus. Why? Read on.

Those who have seen all the films of Abhishek Bachchan so far will be able to make out one common thing that he chooses the films where he is portrayed a commoner from a small town. Be it 'Refugee', 'Tera Jadoo Chal Gaya', 'Bus Itna Sa Khwab Hai' or 'Mumbai Se Aaya Mera Dost'. All these films are Abhishek's solo hero films and all have been flops. Abhishek plays Rakesh, a commoner from Fursatganj, again from a small town who wants to make it big, either by hook or by crook.

As Rakesh cannot lift every one by hook, so he chooses the second path. He practises all kinds of odd tricks to take the vengeance on the system. Boney meets his Cloyed this time as Vimmi prefers to be known as Babli as she has taken a path that her family would not have allowed. Inspired from 1937 classic, 'Boney And Cloyed', 'Bunty Aur Babli' also has Amitabh Bachchan playing a cop for the sake of survival of his son. If memories of 'Ranvir' and 'Sarkar' are still afresh; both films announced to be the first film of the two Bachchans together.

However, 'Bunty Aur Babli' is the first official and the released one having both the Bachchans on one reel. Big B is DCP Dashrath Singh and chases these smart young ones who flee from one palace to another after cheating people. (And, if you thought you would also get to see that famous Rap song of Big B in the film, better recall his recent interviews declaring that it was just a marketing gimmick).

The story of the film is the main villain of it. It remains stagnant at the very point where it starts from the word go. To establish the character of Rakesh, Abhishek Bachchan tries too hard and director Shaad 'Saathiya' Ali wasts too much of footage on him. Shaad says he liked Abhishek's work in 'Yuva', but he is no Manirathnam who will make Abhishek look real in the role of a Lallu. 'Bunty Aur Babli' falls flat on the story front and also at screenplay. Sometime it looks like Abhishek and Rani are freaking out in the ravines of Bithoor and other places of Uttar Pradesh, and the camera is just capturing their voyage. It was Yashraj Films' 'Dhoom' that gave Abhishek's career a big boost last season but its latest didn't help him.

'Bunty Aur Babli' also suffers from the euphoria created over nothing. The film was over promoted across the media and the biggest mistake was to make Abhishek and Rani sit as news anchors on a new channel. Viewers don't want to see their idols deglamourised. Watching Abhishek and Rani wearing spectacles and looking so bad at reading news also plays a deterrent for many viewers. No doubt, the film's opening is excellent, but a bad movie's good opening is always more harmful as it creates the worst mouth publicity. The film is very high in technical departments. Abhik Mukhopadhyay and Anuj Mathur deserve applause for their work as cinematographer and sound designer, respectively.

Even Shankar Ehsaan and Loy did their best and gave more than a hit number, but all these efforts fail as there is no soul (novel story) in the film. Every filmmaker needs to note that Abhishek Bachchan is still a risky asset as a solo hero. Even the plethora of senior artistes right from Raj Babbar, Punit Issar, Kiran Joneja Sippy and Rameshwari to Prem Chopra and Pratima Kazmi do their best to lift the tempo of film, but the end result is not as satisfying as was expected to be. As a producer Aditya Chopra may move ahead with another film but as an actor it will be very hard for Abhishek to move on as a solo hero any more!

As reported in this column, J.P. Dutta has already finalized Priyanka Chopra as the heroine for his 'Umraojaan', but he is yet to decide on his hero. However, Priyanka Chopra is putting all her pressure on Dutta for zeroing on Akshay Kumar as her pairing with the latter has hit their films. But it seems to be a dream. J.P.Dutta hasn't forgotten his insult when Akshay Kumar had declined his 'LoC' offer. In fact, Dutta had invited Akshay to meet him for listening to the script, but Akshay hadn't gone and had rather told Dutta to come to narrate it during his shoot. Dutt had felt embarrassed and written off Akshay's name from 'LoC' cast. Will Dutta forget the past embarrassment and oblige Priyanka is a million dollar question?

Recently one of style Gurus said, as Mallika appeared, it seemed she forgot to wear. Many of her colleagues from the film industry are also unhappy with the way she posed at Cannes. They are just appalled at her body-display in Cannes. Aishwarya, who visited Cannes for three consecutive years and known to comment on anyone unless provoked, was vocally appalled, "What was the need for her to wear, or not wear, clothes that left nothing, and everything, to the imagination?"

"The foreigners are hardly going to be bowled over by a woman's sharp cleavage content. You need much more substance to grab attention at a jamboree like Cannes," Aishwarya added.

But this time though Meera will do more hot scenes with the hero of the film, but considerably it will not rake another controversy, as the hero Lucky Ali is Muslim in religion.

Grapevine insists that in this film, Meera will do a lovemaking scene with the hero Lucky Ali, which is far ahead of 'Murder'-brand bedroom scenes.
However, Rajeev Babbar said the bold scenes and the exposures are not forced but are part of the script.

* Director Rituparno Ghosh's embarrassing call to John?
by Debasis Jana

We're wrong in thinking that John is a hot favourite only with women; the men folk are as gung-ho about this actor. Over coffee and gupshup, John spilled the beans about one such ardent admirer. He said there was a man who would call him on his cell phone almost every day for weeks and send him text messages, too. When John asked him who he was, the caller introduced himself as eminent Bengali director, Rituparno Ghosh. John almost believed the guy and showed a keen interest in him but only till girlfriend Bipasha Basu came into the picture. Talking about the incident John said, "One day, Bips answered my cell when the so-called 'Rituparno Ghosh' called me. Hearing the man on the other end Bips instantly figured out that he wasn't the director he claimed to be. So she hung up. It didn't end there. He called once again to apologize, saying that he was a crazy fan and that was the only way he could speak to his favourite star." What a jerk!

* Salman refused to lock lips with ........!
by Debasis Jana

"Salman refused to lock lips with Larter," said Willard Carroll, the director of Salman Khan's first Hollywood film, 'Marigold', featuring American heroine Ali Larter opposite Bollystar Salman Khan.

"Apparently, Khan outlined his no-kiss policy well before signing the film," Carroll informed.

Salman will act in a sync sound set-up for the first time in his life - and mouth dialogues in American English. But one thing Salman won't do, even for Hollywood, is kiss. Carroll said, "He told me that's the one thing he wouldn't do. In turn, I told him he wouldn't remove his shirt in the film." "Though he pleaded for the sake of his Malaysian audiences, I was firm," laughs Carroll.

* Interview: Aishwarya Rai

“Ash-bashing is going on constantly over here: Aishwarya”
By: IANS
Posted by Jatt2Dzire
Posted Today

Mumbai, May 28 (IANS) Red carpet appearances in Cannes, being interviewed on the Oprah Winfrey show and included in Time magazine's list of young achievers... Aishwarya Rai is going places but says the recognition abroad is not really a recent phenomenon.

The star says she was recognised for her acting as far back as "Devdas" and has got good reviews from critics abroad for her work in "Kuch Na Kaho", "Chokher Bali" and "Raincoat".

"You know a section of the media in India insists I'm pursuing a career abroad when in fact I'm making no effort to get work in Hollywood," she says, quipping that she needs a PR agency in India because she knows nothing about wooing the press here.

There's no dearth of tempting offers at home, Aishwarya says, adding that she would do a Hollywood film just like she's done two Tamil films and a Bengali one.

Up next are "Mistress of Spices" and "Provoked", for which shooting has begun. Closer home are "Saamna" and "Dhoom 2" with Hrithik Roshan.

In this interview with IANS, Aishwarya speaks at length about her appearance on the Oprah Winfrey show. "Being on a show like Oprah representing your country is a big responsibility... I answered for myself and not on behalf of the industry," she says.

Q. I believe you made Oprah wear a sari on her talk show?
A. Yes, I was extremely happy to be on her show. I absolutely admire and adore her. I never thought I'd actually be meeting her... and that too on her show. It's so strange, but prior to our meeting during my visit to the US for the premiere of "Bride & Prejudice", I had some afternoons off and watched Oprah. I thought how wonderful it'd be to be in her show. And within a month I was on her show. She put me in the Woman Of The World section. Her very efficient team did all the spadework within no time. The procedure was meticulous. On the evening of the "Bride & Prejudice" premiere they did a quick interview. The next day I rushed to Chicago to record with Oprah.

Q. And the sari?
A. Yeah, I thought I'd wear one on the show and had packed two of them in case Oprah too wanted to wear one. As luck would have it, my flight was delayed and I reached minutes before the show went on air. So I had no time to change. The Americans love the garment but have no clue how it's tied. Oprah is very respectful and appreciative of all cultures. She was very curious about the sari. And I helped her put it on, on air. She has sent me an autographed picture saying, "Next time we change the blouse."

Q. Did she ask penetrating questions?
A. That's her. She's very direct. She asked me about skin-whitening products and the penchant for changing skin tone. I told her how everyone wants to experiment with skin colour, hair, everything... Being on a show like Oprah representing your country is a big responsibility. I answered for myself and not on behalf of the industry.

Even when I was asked by Oprah about Indian women in general I was very careful. Because I live in the metro. The core of India lives in less urban areas. We've so many different faces of Indian women. If we identify the Indian prototype as the woman with large black eyes, long black hair, graceful sari, then I'd like to see myself fit into that prototype.

Q. You've been accused of being coy on questions of sexual mores such as kissing on American television?
A. Again, I'm very clear I speak for myself. I've never said I'd never kiss, or whatever on screen. I've always maintained I'd cross the bridge when I come to it. Again I'm accused of playing it safe. The truth is I don't know what tomorrow holds. So I can't make a close-ended principle about it.

That image of coyness about our movies exists from long before me. I keep saying in all my interviews abroad that things are changing in our cinema, though very slowly. I do know that the peck has become a familiar sight in our films, and I don't have qualms in saying so. Still, if people think I'm a prude in my pronouncements what can I do?

Q. A part of Bollywood insists you're going to Hollywood?
A. Every time I'm asked if I intend to go to Hollywood I insist I'd do film there just as I've done two Tamil films ("Iruvar" and "Kandukondeain Kandukondein") and in Bengali ("Chokher Bali"). There's no dearth of tempting offers at home. I've always said I don't wish to speak about assignments until they're finalised. I hope filmmakers notice how respectful I've been to their projects even when things haven't worked out. Many major projects that have gone to other actresses, people don't even know I had been approached for them.

Q. Like which?
A. Sorry, talking about what doesn't work out isn't my scene. I'd rather talk about what's happening in my career. Like Raj Santoshi's "Saamna". Raj-ji and I wanted to work together from the time I came to films. The first script he narrated to me was finally made as "Dil Hai Tumhara" by Kundan Shah with Preity Zinta. Then we continued discussing projects. I loved "Lajja" and would've loved to be in it. Again there was a date issue. We eventually decided I'd appear as Sita in the Ramayan episode of "Lajja".

Then he decided not to shoot it. Finally I just had to do "Khakee" as a friend to Raj-ji. He has so many ideas. We almost did the costume drama Prithviraj-Sanjukta. We're now doing "Saamna" which is a very topical subject. It starts in the latter half of the year. So "Saamna" and "Dhoom 2" with Hrithik Roshan will be my next two releases.

Q. You've been chosen for Time magazine's 100 finest young achievers?
A. Oh, you know about that? People are so busy playing up my so-called boring image. But, yes, I did attend the Time party for the achievers in New York. I flew down for four days, attended the event and also did a photo-session for an American magazine and flew back home.

Q. So how was the Ash Bash in New York?
A. Ash Bash? Ash-bashing is what's going on constantly over here. Someone asked me why am I politically correct even when people hit out so openly at me. But the truth is I've never been brought up to behave any other way. I can't say anything hurtful about anyone. I just don't believe in saying mean things. I won't feel good doing that. It's strange how being well-behaved is perceived as being too propah and staid. This is the way I am. I'm sorry.

I'm amazed how many people feel good hitting out at me. They're welcome to do it. Earlier they had more leeway to deny their indiscretions in print. But now on television they look pretty ridiculous denying what they say.

Q. As an actress you've just begun to be recognised abroad?
A. Why now? Even as far back as "Devdas" I was recognised for my acting. Critics abroad gave me very good reviews for "Devdas", "Kuch Na Kaho", "Chokher Bali" and "Raincoat".

Q. Director Andy Tennant told me he had offered you the lead in "Hitch".
A. Did he? He re-wrote the role. When I first heard the script I too wanted it re-written. But then things didn't work out. You know, a section of the media in India insists I'm pursuing a career abroad when in fact I'm making no effort to get work in Hollywood. No one seems to pay attention to this fact. For some bizarre reason the Bollywood media has accused me of employing a PR agency to get me work abroad. Actually I need a PR agency in Bollywood since I seem to know nothing about how to woo the press here.

Q. What are your international projects?
A. I've just completed Paul Berges' "Mistress of Spices". It's a very Indian film. It's all about the spices, their scents and significances. It's being readied either for the Sundance or the Toronto film festival. Then there is Jagmohan Mundhra's "Provoked", the true story of a Punjabi woman named Kiranjit Ahluwalia who left India to marry a London-based guy only to be badly abused in the marriage. She finally ends up in prison for murdering her abusive husband.

Q. These aren't routine roles.
A. But I have never pursued ordinary roles. From the start I've searched for challenges as an actress. That remains unchanged.

* Katrina has to work hard to gather fans
By ANI

Mumbai, May 26 : Looks like Salman's girl, Katrina Kaif has to work hard to gather up her fans. At a recent event, organized by the NGO Shiksha to educate the underprivileged children in Mumbai, Katrina turned up in full form. But unfortunately, the kids there hardly knew who she was; 'woh koi film star hai' is all they knew about her. Ironically, when Katrina did manage to cuddle a kid, the kid's mother appeared in front of her and informed her that the kid was her's and was not part of the event. Moreover,as part of her promotion, Katrina personally invited the children for the special screening of her forthcoming flick! Now, what needs to seen is as to whether such an approach works.

* After Nazar, it's 'Behzzati' next
By ANI

Mumbai, May 26 : With her much talked-about film 'Nazar' already up in theatres, director Soni Razdan is ready with her future projects. Razdan has two projects in hand, one titled 'Behzzati' which is apparently being produced by UTV while the other is the untitled one and deals with the contentious 'gay' issue. However, the work of this untitled venture will be carried outfirst. Soni confirmed that women would always occupy the lead role in her movies. She believes that this is because major problems between guys happen due to women. She believes that this homosexual venture as well would carry some feminist lessons. While the other yet to be started film, 'Behzzati' is not set in contemporary times but is a fictional, epic love story. Soni wants to target the youth in her films and wants to sensitise them regarding the issues.

* John Abraham becomes promotional face of Kaal
By ANI

Mumbai, May 26 : The 'Kaal' cast faced a sort of discrimination when only one star of the film, John Abraham, was invited for the film's overseas premier at Netherlands. John was present at the occasion along with director Soham, who has made his directorial debut under the prestigious Dharma Production banner. Prior to this, the news was doing round that Karan Johar had been promoting only John and rest of the actors were blatantly ignored by him. When contacted, Karan denied such allegations. He said that Dharma production was not responsible for the invitations to the event. He explained John's presence saying that the heart-throb actor has huge female fan following and that was the reason as to why the organizers wanted him there. Abraham commented that he wasn't aware of his fame there. However, he was excited about his movie's overseas screening.

* Salman appears before Bandra Court
By ANI

Mumbai, May 26 : Film actor Salman Khan today appeared before a magistrate in Bandra for trial in the hit and run case in which he is facing charge for killing one and injuring four others. The Court had earlier on the last date of hearling rejected Khan's request to exempt him from appearing during the trial. Salman later approached the Bombay High Court which directed him to move to regular court. A non-bailable warrant has been issued against a prime witness, Ravindra Patil, Salman's body guard who didn't appear before the court as witness during the trail on last two occasions. Patil had testified before the Court that he had advised Salman not to drive rashly but the actor didnot follow his instructions and ultimately ran over people sleeping outside a bakery. A local court had on October 6, 2003, framed ten charges against Salman even as the actor had pleaded not guilty. Salman is charged with killing one person and injuring four on September 28, 2002, by ramming his vehicle into a shop in suburban Bandra. Police alleged that he was under the influence of liquor at the time of mishap, a charge denied by the actor. The High Court dropping the charge of culpable homicide not amounting to murder against Khan had directed the lower court to frame other charges against him. Principal Sessions Judge R R Vachha, hearing Maharashtra government's plea, on June nine last year, had transferred the case from the court of Magistrate S Y Sishode to the court of Additional Chief Magistrate J B Pankhe. The state had challenged a lower court order allowing magistrate Sishode to conduct Salman's trial. The state had urged that Bandra Magistrate S Y Sishode was not competent to conduct the trial as he had earlier recorded statements of three witnesses. Under section 164 CrPC, such a Magistrate had to transfer the case to other court for trial, it had argued.

* Karan Johar on a candid roll about the Shahrukh Khan fixation

He loves Shahrukh Khan and says so in complete candor.
The sniggers, the snides…well, he isn't deaf to those.
But he couldn't care less!

“I need him more that he will ever need me!”

“What is that people have against me working with my favorite actor?” asks an amused Karan Johar. The fact that he has gone on record saying that Dharma doesn't work without Shahrukh may have caused the tickle' we tell him

“But that is how I like it. My father Yash Johar used to think of Shahrukh as his son. He told Shahrukh that whatever Dharma does, he will be a part of it. I still remember the day at my father's funeral; Shahrukh was present at the venue, doing what? Helping the car traffic out of the place. That is the bond that I share with him”

“Shahrukh is great news to the economics of Dharma!”

This is for the cynics, if I were to look at the more commercial aspect too, he is perfect for Dharma. The moment I have Shahrukh Khan in my film, the price of my music soars & the price of my film both in the domestic market as well as overseas go through the roof! Shahrukh is great news to the economics of Dharma! Now explain which oaf on earth would want to throw of it all away? Certainly not me! When I have a personal access to him, I am going to use it to the best. Infact I believe I need him more than he will ever need me!

Amitabh, Aamir or Shahrukh? The best according to Karan is…

Another thing that KJ has a rub for is his regard for Shahrukh as the best actor in Bollywood. “I genuinely think Shahrukh is a wonderful actor” he says matter of fact. So does that displace Amitabh? we prod. “Nothing can displace Amitabh Bachchan. He is God!” Karan exclaims. If he were to place Amitabh on the number ladder, where would Bachchan be? “Mr.Bachchan is above numbers. Like I said, he is God! So the number slot begins with Shahrukh Khan. He is right at the top” Karan asserts.

“I never said Aamir is better than Shahrukh!”

What about his pet peeve, Kadz? “Oh, Kajol is fabulous. Among the heroines, she is undoubtedly the best. Kajol is brilliant at what she does, second to nobody. But that doesn't maker her better than Shahrukh. And you don't have to accuse me of playing favorites, check with Kajol, she herself admits that she has learnt a hell lot from Shahrukh!” Karan picks good defense. That leaves us with Aaamir Khan. Does this Khan rock according to Karan? “Oh, yes I think Aaamir is a tremendous actor, among the finest we have! He is one Khan I haven't worked with, would love to have him in one of my films. The final toss, Aamir or Shahrukh? “Shahrukh anyday, I said I haven't worked with Aamir, didn't say he was better than SRK”

KJ, the obsession if not well understood is well expressed!

* Madhavan to become a father

There's a lot for Madhavan to smile about in the coming months. He turns 35 in June, has a Tamil and a Hindi release lined up in the summer and also becomes a father in August.
"My wife Sarita and I are expecting our first baby," he announces proudly. "It's a big moment. We've waited long enough for it. I make sure that I spend as much time with her as possible. In fact, last week when I went to the US Sarita accompanied me."

The actor was in the US to play golf, the game he describes as "my third biggest passion in life after my wife and movies", at the posh Pebbles Beach in California.

"It's the mecca of golf players, open only to the best players in the world. Tiger Wood plays at Pebbles Beach. It was a great moment for me. I felt like an excited schoolboy at a toy store. I got my wife to click me there."

Career-wise Madhavan seems to have entered a brand new phase. Even as his new Tamil film Thambi reaches finishing point, the actor is ready with his new Hindi film.

"It's an out-and-out comedy called 'Ramji London Wale', a remake of Kamal Haasan's Tamil hit Nala Damyanthi. I play a cook from Bihar in London who's a major fan of Mr Amitabh Bachchan. The character is a lot like me. No, I don't cook well. But I am a major Bachchan buff, like the rest of the country. Ramji Londonwale is a tribute to two of my idols, Amitabh Bachchan and Kamal Haasan."

The Hindi comedy, directed by Ashutosh Gowariker's former assistant Sanjay Daima, has been taken over for marketing and distribution by Columbia-Tristar.

Says Madhavan: "They're a very professional organisation. We need that kind of infrastructure and marketing acumen to take our films to the right places. I believe 'Ramji...' is my most massy Hindi film to date. And since I'm from Bihar I had a whale of time doing the character."

The film opens on July 22. Also around the corner in August is Madhavan's new Tamil film Thambi. And Madhavan can't stop raving about the director. "Seeman is the best director I've worked with since Mani Ratnam. His grasp over the plot is amazing. I think I'm blessed to be working with the best directors."

While his career forges ahead, there's palpable excitement in Madhavan's household over the impending arrival. "The baby can only bring me more luck. We've already thought of alternative names for it. Though I'm really excited about the impending release of a Tamil movie and Hindi release within a month, nothing can beat the excitement, nervousness, anxiety and joy of being a father."

The movie will cast Aishwarya Rai in the lead role. Its shooting has already started in Kerala. She has not revealed any more detail though. “Asmit finds Meera nice, Mallika arrogant”

Ashmit Patel who is in news for his lip-locking scene with Pak actress Meera in 'Nazar' is very excited with the release of his movie. He is all praise for Meera. However, his experience with Bollywood's smooch queen Mallika Sherawat is not so good. He says that Mallika is arrogant. At present, he has Khalid Mohammed's 'Silsillay', Suhail Khan's 'Fight Club' and Hriday Shetty''s 'Daag'. Besides, he has been acting with Rekha, Mahima Choudhry, Urmila Matodkar and Kim Sharma. So, he considers himself very lucky and is contented with his present status in the industry.

“Shetty sisters' khamosh over Fareb”

Actor - turned - director Deepak Tijori signed Shetty sisters - Shilpa and Shamita -- in his 'Fareb'. Both the sisters agreed to work together in Tajori's movie, as Shamita was not getting movie offers. They accepted Tjori's offer after consulting their family. Incidentally, Shilpa was acting in Tijori's suspense thriller 'Khamosh - Kauf Ki Raat'. Deepak had also completed the script of 'Fareb' during the shoot of 'Khamosh….' only. After 'Khamosh…' failed to get the audience to the theaters, Shilpa and Shamita are distancing from Tijori, and avoid talking about 'Fareb'. When someone asked Shilpa about acting in 'Fareb', Shilpa kept quiet (Khamosh) and slipped away.

Those who had been there on a holy mission to the shrine were found excited to have got a chance to have a glimpse of their favorite stars.

“Shilpa turns Khalnayika”

After the success of 'Bazigaar' and 'Dhadkan', Shilpa Shetty has been waiting for a hit. However, no producer is seriously considering to sign her for his or her project in the wake of her several consecutive flops. As a saving grace she has shifted towards South. Though she has acted in southern movies in the past too, she always aspires for Hindi movies. At present, she is acting in a Kannad movie titled 'Aatre Shankar'. But she is playing the negative (Kalnayika) role in the hope that the people of south will accept her as Khalnayika.

* Diana Hayden: Ten on ten!

Well, she did make a slightly late entry into Bollywood, unlike most of the other crowned beauties in her league; but when she actually did walk in, slim and tall, we thought Diana Hayden would create quite a dhamaka. And, as much as she gets ten on ten for the way she talks, walks, thinks and looks, the lady hasn't yet got a fair chance to prove her histrionic capabilities. Quick with her defence and candid with her replies, she tells us, "I'll be really frank here - the kinds of roles that I'm being offered aren't moving me or getting me the least bit excited. I'm not the kind of person who wants to do ten films at the same time; I want to do one thing and give it 100 percent. Neither do I want to go around hunting for roles." We get the point, lady. And just for that answer, you'd give her 11 on ten - what say?

* Salman takes to yoga!

When it comes to our macho men on-screen, few people expect that they're actually cool, level-headed, health conscious guys off-screen. So it came as quite a surprise when we heard that Salman Khan gave a very well-trained yoga demonstration at the inauguration of a yoga centre abroad. Those present were mighty impressed, of course, and we're sure they've become as much die-hard fans of yoga as they were of Sallu bhai…or have become since then. Incidentally, the same yoga expert who managed to get Salman to do the demonstration also has Michael Douglas and Boris Becker as clients, we're told. Our Khan seems to be in safe hands!

* Aarti Chhabria: Kabab mein haddi?

When you're shooting with a couple of actors who are 'seeing' each other, things can get a little awkward for you. At least, that's what industry watchers thought Aarti Chhabria would be going through when she announced that she was shooting with Kareena Kapoor and Shahid Kapur for Satish Kaushik's new film. However, when someone mentioned this to her, those present were pleasantly surprised when Aarti categorically stated that 'When you're on the sets of a senior director like Satishji, you can definitely expect a professional environment - and that is exactly how it was.' Of course, we didn't expect anything less from Kareena and Shahid. And, thankfully, Aarti is not the kind to be a kabab mein haddi!

When we spoke to executive producer Shabbir Boxwalla, he told us, "We weren't sure of having a mahurat. But then some people did suggest that we stick to the auspicious ritual. * What makes Riya go 'Ash'en?

Her dreamy eyes and starry gaze make men go weak in the knees, alright. Needless to say, that makes the rest of the gals go green with envy. But what's really annoys this 'Sen'-sation at times is comparison. Nah, not with her talented sibling, Raima, but with none other than Aishwarya Rai. Responding to the suggestion for the umpteenth time, Riya Sen says, "I'm immune to it now. Ash is gorgeous and she's indeed the most beautiful woman in Bollywood. But I would want to have my own identity and hear people say that 'Riya Sen is good with all that she has'." Yeah, that you are, Riya, but being compared to the best beauty in the world just goes to show how good you really are. Food for some 'beautiful' thought, eh?

* Priyadarsan's Angel!

If 'Charlie's Angels' impressed you, wait for this one: Priyadarsan's very own home-grown 'Angel' is all set to attack. Debutante Neetu Chandra, who is doing Priyan's new film, promises to be just as energetic and vigorous as Cameron, Drew or Lucy were when it comes to doing filmi maar-dhaad scenes. The lady actually has a black belt in karate, which proves just how tough she can be. If that hasn't convinced you, let us tell you that she has also represented India in sports at the national level. However, the economics of becoming an athlete scared the youngster into taking up films as a career option. And now she's all set to race up the numbers' ladder. Make way for Priyan's 'Angel', guys!

* Saif Ali Khan: Silent lover!

If you've been floored by the posters of the next Saif Ali Khan-Sunjay Dutt film, 'Parineeta', which is based on the Bengali classic of the same name, so have quite a few from the audience. The actors' get-ups remind you of Shah Rukh Khan and Jackie Shroff in the runaway hit, 'Devdas', or so a lot of people have told us. But here's an interesting bit of news we wormed out of an inside source: Apparently Saif was initially offered Sunjay's role, while Abhishek was being considered for Saif's role. But, the story goes, Saif liked the other role so much that he insisted that he would like to do that instead. And that's how we now have the polished Khan-man playing the silent lover in the movie. And, considering that Saif has more or less disappeared from the filmi scene these days (where is he?), it looks like he's taking his role - the 'silent' part, at least - very seriously in real life, too!

* Sushmita beats the heat!

While we all are trying to beat the heat in Mumbai, the gorgeous Sushmita Sen has other plans. This time she isn't taking off to an exotic foreign locale, but to our very own desi version of Switzerland: picturesque Srinagar. Yes, she's headed for the cool weather of Kashmir for some work…and a little pleasure, too. In the meanwhile, the promos of 'Maine Pyar Kyon Kiya', with Sush in chiffon saris (the look that makes men drool over her even more) and dancing with Salman Khan, is escalating the temperatures in the city of Mumbai. We don't know if the lady is planning to take an extended vacation, but when you're at such a high, the rest of the world down there below the peaks doesn't really matter!

* Amisha's coastal capers!

The globe-trotting Patel gal is finally back on home ground, after nearly two months of shows (with Adnan Sami and Rahgav), shopping and chilling in the US of A. Amisha heaves a sigh of relief to be back in Mumbai. She told us, "Well, the shows were a huge success. I had no idea that Adnan Sami was such a crowd-puller overseas! We were constantly on the move, hopping from one coast to the other. I've been so out of touch with everything happening here in Mumbai that it will take me some time to reorient myself again. The only thing that my friends from Mumbai would tell me is 'Enjoy your stay there; the heat levels here are rising!' About that, they were right. The heat is taking a toll on my health already. Other than that, I'm waiting to get back into 'Mumbai mode'," says Amisha. Well, babes, we missed you around here - of course, one Mr Bhatt did that the most. Koi shaque?

* Sen sisters turn on the heat!

Now that sexy gals Shilpa and Shamita are posing together in a film, cinegoers are looking forward to more such surprises. And, of course, one such 'Sen'-sual package that comes to our mind is that containing the Sen siblings - Riya and Raima. When we asked Riya about it, she exclaimed in delight, "Raima and I would love to work together; it would be such a blast! We've got offers, but nothing has been enticing enough for both of us to plunge into it. Together we're like a house on fire!" We guess that's exactly the reason they haven't been teamed on-screen - together, the Sen sisters would be way too hot to handle!

* Amitabh's second son!

We thought Amitabh Bachchan would have his hands full after teaming up with son Abhishek for a couple of films, but we were mistaken. Bachchan is also 'supporting' another 'son'. No, don't get us wrong, there is no other Bachchan offspring that we know of. We're only talking about producer Romesh Sharma's son Karan, who is making his debut into the big-screen world soon. The Big B treats Karan like a son, and is even doing a major role in his debut production. He makes no bones about why he has signed the film and freely admits that it is because he is close to the Sharma family. Romesh tells us, "When I approached Mr Bachchan with the script and told him it was my son's debut, he said I didn't need to say anything more. He would definitely do the film. It was a very touching gesture on his part." Dost ho to aisa!

* Ruksaar: Ramu’s new lady!

If there's one actress who's looking good, it's Ruksaar - the gal who is doing Ramgopal Varma's 'Sarkaar' and 'D'. The actress has completed both films and is now waiting to find out how to the audience reacts to her. "I am very happy to be working with such superb actors as Amitabh, Abhishek and Supriya Pathak. And Randeep Hooda has done a brilliant job in 'D'. Now I hope Ramu signs me on for more films, because I simply love working with him," she laughs. Well, considering that the offbeat director sticks by his women - if you'll forgive the phrase - repeating them in film after film, we think that's quite likely, Ruksaar, that's quite likely!

* Interview: John Abraham

“JOHN ABRAHAM TURNS A HOT STAR”
By Eye TV India Bureau
Tete-a-Tete

John Abraham has become a hot star of Bollywood after his successful films like 'Dhoom' last year and 'Kaal' this year. We had a brief talk with him recently.

Excerpts of tete-e-tete with him;

Q. Did you know that 'Kaal' would have a bumper opening?
A. Yes, Not only I but everyone in the industry could imagine that a film having names of Karan Johar and Shah Rukh Khan linked with a film is sure to attract a bumper opening. The director of 'Yuva' has presented this movie very well.

Q. How has it turned a little cool after some time?
A. This is a mystery movie. After discovering the mystery one will not like to see it again. The mystery was out through mouth publicity too by the audience. Anyway, the movie has done a good business.

Q. Aren't you very excited with your next 'Virudh'?
A. Yes, I am. In fact, I started weeping after Maheshji narrated the script to me. I am sure that the movie will bring tears in the eyes of its female audience. However, I don't have any major role in this movie. I am playing son of Amitabh Bachchan though.

Q. Is 'Virudh' a copy of 'Saaransh'?
A. No, it's not. I have watched 'Saaransh'. 'Virudh' is completely different from 'Saaransh'.

Q. What's the status of 'Garam Masala'?
A. The audience will find a different John in 'Garam Masala'. This is Priyadarshan's movie, and it is almost complete. To act in a comedy isn't an easy task. I have tried to do this comedy as Akshay Kumar provided me a few tips. I have enjoyed a lot while working with Paresh Rawal, Akshay Kumar and Rajpal Yadav.

Q. What's your position in the industry today? Who do you give credit for it?
A. The credit for all this goes to Mahesh Bhatt. He gave me an opportunity in 'Jism'. I have no godfather in the industry. I have reached this position due to my hard work.

* Interview: Amitabh Bachchan

“How can I take money from SRK: Amitabh Bachchan”

Superstar Amitabh Bachchan, who refused to let Shah Rukh Khan pay him for an appearance in "Paheli", says certain bonds go beyond commercial considerations.

He added that he did "Black" and "Kaante" too for emotional rather than monetary reasons.

"I did 'Kaante' for Sanjay Dutt, and there was no question of money. How could I forget how wonderful (the late) Sunil and Nargis Dutt were to me when I was a newcomer lost in the city? I never forget these gestures," Amitabh told in an interview.

He defends his decision to act free of cost in "Black" by saying: "I knew I was doing it for the love of Sanjay Leela Bhansali's cinema. When he came to me with the script, I knew something very special was going to happen on screen. And it did."

Excerpts from the interview:

Q: Is it true that you refused to take the Rs.10-million remuneration that Shah Rukh Khan offered you for "Paheli"?
A: It wasn't Rs.10 million, but Rs.5 million. And why should I charge any money from Shah Rukh? He's a friend. When he asked me to do a small role in "Paheli", I immediately agreed. These are little gestures that one makes for friends. Paise to aate hi rehenge (money keeps coming). Where does money come into it?

After the three-day shooting, Shah Rukh came to hug me with a bouquet and an envelope. I didn't pay any attention to it until I got into my car. I thought the envelope contained a letter of thanks. But when I opened it, to my surprise, I found a cheque that was totally unacceptable to me.

Q: But you're in the film because you add substantially to its profit potential.
A: Kuch bhi ho, yaar (whatever you say)! Some things are done for emotions. I did "Kaante" for Sanjay Dutt, and there was no question of money. How could I forget that it was Sanjay's mother, (late) Nargis Dutt, who brought me to Mumbai? She arranged my first screen test.

How could I forget how wonderful (late) Sunil and Nargis Dutt were to me when I was a newcomer lost in the city? I never forget these gestures. I choose to forget things that are not relevant to my life. And for people who have played even the smallest hand in my growth as a human being and an actor, such tokens of appreciation are always a pleasure for me.

Q: There are many instances of you foregoing your remuneration, including for "Black".
A: There was never any question of money exchanging hands for "Black". Right from the start, I knew I was doing it for the love of Sanjay Leela Bhansali's cinema. When he came to me with the script, I knew something very special was going to happen on screen. And it did. To even think about money in a film like this is an unbearable thought to me.

Q: But surely now when "Black" is declared a hit, the producer should pay you?
A: Not at all! The thought hasn't crossed my mind. "Black" is too special to be weighed against monetary considerations. Like I said, there are many situations where I've put in appearances (in films) because friends have asked me to. Money has never been an issue.

For me, my true reimbursement as an artiste is when Shah Rukh goes up on stage at the Filmfare awards and says that for him a power-performance is Amitabh Bachchan in "Black". What more can I want?

* Interview: Saif Ali Khan

“SAIF: WHY TO SHOULDER FULL RESPONSIBILITY?”
By Eye TV India Bureau
Tete-a-Tete

Saif Ali Khan alias Chhote Nawab has undergone several ups and downs in his life. But the recent successes in ' Kal Ho Na' and 'Hum Tum' have profusely heartened him. This has indeed given him a new life, especially when he suffered a big shock of separating from his actor wife Amrita Singh after leading a happy life for several years. This has mellowed the ever smiling and talkative chhote nawab down. He attributes it to his growing age though. Saif has the ambition of becoming a solo hero like Shah Rukh or Aamir Khan for whose movies the people anxiously wait for years. But until then he would continue acting in multistarrers. "Why should I shoulder the whole responsibility of a movie?" We met him recently.

Excerpts of his tete-e-tete:

Q. Did you feel at ease while acting in 'Parineeta'?
A. Yes, it was very easy. My image is of a carefree, and high-energy youth. I try to show it on the screen though I don't feel so all the time. I also feel sad, serious and quiet like any other normal person. One can never stay in the same mood. What's acting? It's an expression of one's emotions and thoughts. There are many ways to express them. I also do it.

Q. How do you look at your character of Shekhar in 'Parineeta'?
A. Shekhar's character in 'Parineeta' is slightly difficult. He feels suffocated under the pressure of his father. It has become his temperament. I like it. One commits a mistake under somebody's pressure. So, Shekhar revolts against the pressure. Though he belongs to a business family, yet he loves music. His father doesn't appreciate his son's love for music. That's why they neither talk nor respect each other. Despite this weakness in his character, Shekhar changes his temperament and asserts himself. That's why he becomes a hero, and I like his character.

Q. Will your fans like you playing Shekhar's role?
A. Viewers get bored with one playing the same character every now and then. Everyone enjoys new interesting things. To play this character was both an easy as well as a hard task for me. It was difficult because I had to look back for this role. I found this easy as I think Shekhar's is a normal character.

Q. What about your 'Salaam Namastey'?
A. This is a fun-filled movie. A boy from Punjab goes to Australia to study architecture, but turns a chef and cooks food there. The movie has good music.

Q. Haven't you changed your selection of movies and also the working style?
A. It happens with the age. Moreover, the industry is also undergoing a change. Everyone wants to complete the film in one schedule now. I am also doing it. Besides, I am trying to give a different look in every movie. I don't want to get bored by looking at my pictures. People should anxiously wait for my new movie.

Q. Is it true that after 'Hum Tum' you had decided to be a solo hero in your movies?
A. I am not a fool to take the full responsibility of a movie on my shoulders. If I get a solo, I shall be happy. Otherwise I shall do multistarrer. I acted in 'LoC' too. I wish the people to wait for my forthcoming movies as they do for Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan's films. Until then I shall continue acting in multistarrers.

Q. How do you feel now leading a lonely life?
A. I have never been alone. I am busy in a lot of things. Yes, I got sometime to talk to myself in the meantime. The life will go on though many things didn't work. One cannot go on lamenting for what has already happened.

Q. Would you comment on reports about you in a section of the media?
A. I don't know about their intention. It has hurt me though. Being a human being, I have limitations to keep everyone happy forever. However, I would never like to hurt or harm anyone. But, I wish to be allowed to keep myself happy.

* WILL 'WATER' CREATE ANOTHER DILEMMA?
By Eye TV India Bureau
In the News

After 'Fire' and '1947 - The Earth', Deepa Mehta is fully occupied now with her 'Water'. This is to recall that she had to stop the shooting of 'Water' in Varanasi some five years ago following a stir by rightists. However, she became popular later with her 'Fire' though this also evoked opposition from some sections of the public who did not like the movie's theme of lesbianism. She had planned to make movies titled 'Agni' too. According to sources close to her, the shooting of 'Water' is over. She has completed it in Sri Lanka though she had to change the lead cast. Instead of Shabana Azmi she took bandit queen Seema Biswas and she replaced Nandita Das with Liza Ray.

Deepa is known for choosing bold subjects for her movies. She is also known for her love for art films. That is why she signs artists like Shabana Azmi and Nandita Das for the lead roles. Incidentally, her '1947 - The Earth' was based on Pakistani litterateur Bapsi Sidwa's novel 'Craking India. This didn't create as much heat as was created by 'Fire'. Incidentally, Sidwa has also written a book on water, which may see the light of the day after the release of Deepa's movie 'Water'. Industry circles wonder if the release of 'Water' will be a smooth affair, and not attract any opposition from the conservative Hindus as in the past? We may recall that the movie is based on the conditions of widows during the 30's in India.

* KARISMA'S ABSENCE PUZZLES INDUSTRY
By Eye TV India Bureau
In the News

Karisma Kapoor was missing at the recent party hosted by director-producer S. Ramanathan to celebrate the completion of his long-awaited movie 'Zamaanat'. Incidentally, Amitabh Bachchan was present at the jashn, while his costar Karisma Kapoor was conspicuous by her absence. This has puzzled the industry. According to sources close to Karisma, she was ready to grace the occasion. However, she was shocked to know that she had not been invited to the party. This has led to rumors that the producer-director, who is very close to Big B and considers Amitabh as his most honorable patron, had intentionally avoided calling Karisma on this occasion.

The reason is simple. Ranganathan didn't like to embarrass Amitabh Bachchan. This is to recall that both the Bachchan and Kapoor families haven't yet forgotten the past incident of the cancellation of the betrothal of Karisma with Abhishek. The Bachchan family had felt very humiliated on the reported insistence of Karisma's mother about the financial status of Abhishek at that time. Some circles have, however, tried to undermine the absence of Karisma by saying that she might be preoccupied with her newborn child. This is indeed painful for Karisma that an elderly actor like Amitabh hasn't pardoned Karisma for no fault of her. How 'Zamaanat' will fare at the box office will be known later after its release?

* Who will win Ash - Santoshi or Dwivedi?
By IndiaFM News Bureau, May 28th 2005 - 1520 hrs IST

Rajkumar Santoshi has a flickering mind when it comes to starting new projects.

Almost a year back, after the success of Khakee, Santoshi was considering several story ideas from Prithiviraj Sanjukta to Chatrapati Shivaji. But he finalized on Ranveer for AB Corp that was supposed to star Amitabh Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan for the first time along with Sanjay Dutt. Unfortunately the project was shelved.

Santoshi subsequently started Keshu Ramsay's Family early in 2005 starring Amitabh Bachchan, Akshay Kumar and Aryaman and this time fortunately the project is going ahead steadily. Of all his story-ideas prior to Family, Prithiviraj Sanjukta was the one that still fascinated him and he had plans to make a film on the subject with Ajay Devgan and Aishwarya Rai in title roles.

But in between all this, he zeroed in on a new theme and launched another film Saamna starring Ajay Devjan, Aishwarya Rai, Akshay Kumar and Nana Patekar. So after Family, it's Saamna which means Prithiviraj Sanjukta will still have to wait.

Amidst all this, another talented filmmaker Chandraprakash Dwivedi who earlier directed the masterpiece period drama Pinjar, was enthralled on the life history of the Rajput king Prithviraj and his ladylove Sanjukta. The director whose meticulous detailing showed in Pinjar did his share of research on the subject and wanted to cast Sunny Deol in the role of Prithiviraj. However his choice for Sanjukta was same as Santoshi's - Aishwarya.

Dwivedi had also offered Pinjar to Aishwarya earlier but she couldn't do the film. However this time Dwivedi desperately wanted Ash to be a part of his period drama. But Aishwarya was ethically committed to Santoshi on the same subject though the film still had some time to start-off.

Also Aishwarya was against the idea that two filmmakers work on the same theme at the same time. Earlier too Santoshi faced a similar situation in 2002 when his historical biopic on Bhagat Singh clashed with Guddu Dhanoa's film on exactly the same story that released on the same day. That worked against both the films. Neither Aishwarya nor the filmmakers or the Bollywood audience would want history to repeat itself (no pun).

So finally the two filmmakers reportedly seem to have reached on a settlement. The deal is that only one among Santoshi and Dwivedi will make a film on the Prithiviraj-Sanjukta. And Aishwarya will work with the one who starts the movie first. In most probabilities Dwivedi may prove out to be the winner since Santoshi is currently busy with Family and will soon start Saamna thereafter. Also the agreement between the directors doesn't end there. The buzz is that the filmmakers are ready to share their research knowledge with each other.

We would just want the best man to win. The woman (Aishwarya) wins either ways.

* Isha does a J.Lo!
By IndiaFM News Bureau, May 27th, 2005 - 0930 hrs IST

She is not taking names right now…slow but steady filling her kitty with a couple of interesting offers; Isha Sharvani is going places for sure.

Try to poke her about the films she is doing and she quickly retorts, “I am little superstitious and wouldn't like to name anything before I have actually signed the dotted line.”

We give up, but not before she tells us something about the movies atleast, “well surprisingly I am getting a lot of offers for comedies, after a lot of thought I finally signed one of them, its an offbeat comedy and another film I am doing is a period flick,” she informs, promising details a little later.

How many of these are again highlighting her dancing abilities we tease, “Believe me the roles that are being offered now are of a different variety, one of the films I am doing has no songs at all, there I am only acting, no dancing at all,” she laughs.

Isha has also been signed as the brand ambassador for Dabur's Honey and saffron soap. When we spoke to her she was just back from shooting its commercial in Banglore. “The advertisement has a fresh and natural look, goes with the image of the soap,” she says speaking about the commercial. How about the experience, “it was absolutely fantastic, we had 3 days for shooting but we wrapped it up in a day and a half, those guys were so professional and punctual,” she gushes.

While on this roller coaster, Isha gives us a sneak peek in her IIFA performance this year at Amsterdam.

“Well, I get to be on stage for 6 minutes, for 3 minutes I am on my own, performing on t*** and bits of my songs. For the next 3 minutes I will be sharing the stage with you know who?” she asks…breaking into the hot 'n' happening Teri Toh, she makes the guess easy, Bombay Rockers.

All excited she says, “with them I am doing something that I have never done before, I am going into R&B mode…J.Lo kind of hip hop dancing, these guys are huge right now and I absolutely love this track.”

Looks like IIFA is going to be one rocking affair this year, watch out Amsterdam, Bollywood's coming all loaded!

* Meera goes dare- bare!
By IndiaFM News Bureau, May 28th 2005 - 1230 hrs IST

After her kissing scene in Soni Razdan's Nazar created brouhaha all over Pakistan, or so we think, Meera is back with Rajeev Babbar's Kasak.

If the grapevine is to be believed, the actress has gone a step ahead doing a lot of skin show and shooting a love- making scene with Lucky Ali. The director of the film comments that the film is a love story with a few songs and love scenes between the lead pair. He maintains that the lovemaking scenes in the film are not forced but are part of the script.

What if it rakes yet another controversy? "My script demands it, they are bound to feature in such a film," says Babbar.

By IndiaFM News Bureau, May 28th 2005 - 1230 hrs IST

Does that mean that the shoot goes into a limbo? “You wish! Unlike other actresses, I am very professional. The moment you unhook me of your interview I will be back to my rehearsals!” she says taking a sip at her honey laced lemonade. But why was she doing those daredevils? “Kamar matkane toh sabhi ko aata hain. I thought I should do something more, something different. So in my forthcoming video, you'll see me do a lot of acrobats and sporty stuff” the sex siren exclaims.

* Amrita Arora's challenge to Bollywood…
By IndiaFM News Bureau, May 26th, 2005 - 0930 hrs IST

“A supermodel, a style diva, an item girl
This glam goddess never retires of the flashbulbs”

We can't help admire her near perfect figure and the famous rear, “Malaika, did you really have a baby or was motherhood a passing illusion? we humor her. She gives a throaty laugh “Hey, thanks you guys. Being a celebrity, you tend to get a bit obsessed about the way you look. Mirrors are what we actors spend most of the time with. So when I got pregnant and my body began to loose shape, it was a bit unnerving at first” she owns up. “But I put in a lot of sweat to regain the curves that the camera so loves” she smiles.

The lady has created some serious Dhamaal with SRK in the Karan Johar's Kaal. “Yup, compliments have been pouring in thick and fast. I was pretty confident of the song. It is probably the most stylized number in recent times” the lady tells us, her pout hasn't dimmed one bit.

But it's not just the song that has got tongues wagging, its Malaika's 'hotter-than-hell looks that have men sweating it out. “Well yes, I play a ballet dancer in the song. Suriley Goel fixed my clothes and you can't go too wrong when you have Shahrukh to dance along” Malaika smiles.

But now that she is married and has a kid, does she feel the need to cover up and go easy on the skin? “No, not once, neither Arbaaz nor his family imposed any rules on me. So it hasn't been bad. But yes I decide what I want to show & what I want to shelve. Nobody can arm-twist me into doing anything I don't want to” she says firmly.

And what her sister Ammu (she calls Amrita that) had to say was saucier. The sex kitten says, “When Malla comes on screen, she really blows you away” gushes the girl. “I so often heard people snigger, 'She's a mother, how can she do such things' and I can see just how jealous they are. Show me another woman who can look as hot as she does, I'll retire that very day!”

* One thing Amrita Arora regrets…
By IndiaFM News Bureau, May 26th, 2005 - 0930 hrs IST

…is doing Girlfriend. I am the kind of person who doesn't regret things in life. But this is one instance when I felt I shouldn't have done it. But what is it that got her to sign the film in the first place? “I was given to understand that it would take a stand on lesbianism. I thought of it to be something progressive but when I attended the premier, I was horrified with what I saw. Instead of sending out a message, it simply blurred into the sleaze fest that was happening around”

Gossip mills have it she even had a showdown with her parents at the premier…”Now that is stretching things too far. None of that happened. It was just that my parents were very upset with what they saw and understandably so. They left the screening midway” she tells us. What did sis Malaika have to say? “Malla? The first thing she said was, 'What were you thinking?'” Amrita tells us, keeping up her frankspeak. “But I learnt from it and have decided that I won't venture into anything that might even remotely disgust my parents” Ammu owns up.

Twist in the story: Ask Ishaa about her experience of working in Girlfriend and she says, “I shared a better chemistry with Amrita than my co star Aashish. Wonder what that means?

* Karan Johar on a candid roll about the SRK fixation
By IndiaFM News Bureau, May 27th, 2005 - 0930 hrs IST

He loves Shahrukh Khan and says so in complete candor

The sniggers, the snides…well, he isn't deaf to those

But he couldn't care less!

“I need him more that he will ever need me!”
“What is that people have against me working with my favorite actor?” asks an amused Karan Johar. The fact that he has gone on record saying that Dharma doesn't work without Shahrukh may have caused the tickle' we tell him.

“Amitabh, Aamir or Shahrukh? The best according to Karan is…”
Another thing that KJ has a rub for is his regard for Shahrukh as the best actor in Bollywood.

* Shah Rukh can't smoke now!

Tough times are ahead for Bollywood's king Khan, Shah Rukh, who is self confessed chain smoker.

India has banned smoking scenes in movies and on television, saying they glamorise the use of cigarettes but the move has angered filmmakers in the prolific Bollywood movie industry.

In tough new regulations, the health ministry said distributors and directors would have to show health warnings on screens in old movies and TV shows, whether Indian or foreign, that showed actors smoking.

"(There would have to be a) mandatory display of a prominent scroll containing a health warning in programmes containing scenes with smoking situations that have been produced before this notification," a ministry statement said on Wednesday.

The new rules also mean names or logos of tobacco products would have to be cut or masked.

Thailand also banned smoking scenes in films in 2000.

Bollywood, which turns out three times more movies than Hollywood, often depicts its macho heroes with cigarettes or cheaper-priced handrolled bidis dangling from their lips.

"It is an absurd regulation...to ban smoking on screen is ridiculous. It's a joke taken too far," filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt was quoted in a newspaper as saying on Monday.

Another director, Shyam Benegal, told the newspaper the move would interfere with artistic expression.

"The smoking act comes in handy when you want to develop a character. The ban does not make sense," Benegal said.

But the World Health Organisation, which estimates smoking is linked to more than 800,000 deaths in India a year, mainly among men aged between 25 to 69, lauded the move.

"Portrayal of attractive people smoking has an influence on young people as some of them identify with those on the screens," said Harsaran Pandey, WHO's spokeswoman for Southeast Asia.

In May 2004, India banned smoking in public places such as railway stations and parks as well as tobacco advertising and sponsorship by tobacco firms of sporting events.

Shares of India's diversified ITC Ltd, the country's biggest cigarette maker, were down 0.32 per cent on Wednesday morning on the benchmark Bombay exchange but analysts said the new rules would have little impact.

"No cigarette maker was using movies to promote his products... So this will have little impact on cigarette companies," an analyst with a leading brokerage said.

* Ash is 9th most beautiful lady

The five most beautiful women in the world, at least in the opinion of an upmarket British fashion magazine, all have one thing in common -- they're brunettes.

Hollywood star Angelina Jolie tops Harpers and Queen's list of global beauties, compiled by 1,000 experts from the worlds of fashion, arts, the media and, peculiarly, plastic surgery.

Following behind are supermodel Christy Turlington, Queen Rania of Jordan, film director Sofia Coppola and cooking diva Nigella Lawson.

Blondes such as supermodel Kate Moss, Kill Bill star Uma Thurman and Lost in Translation star Scarlett Johansson are in the top 100, but have been relegated out of the top five.

"We were really surprised when the brunettes came out on top," Harpers and Queen editor Lucy Yeomans said on Tuesday.

"But from our panel results, we witnessed a definite shift away from the traditionally deified blonde stereotype. Instead, people with a more unusual and interesting beauty ranked higher."

Aishwarya Rai, the Indian actress who played the lead in Bride and Prejudice, is ninth in the poll of the 100 Most Beautiful Women of Today, which appears in the July issue of Harpers and Queen.

* I was skimpily dressed: Esha

Two back-to-back hits - "Dhoom" and "Kaal" - have brought the glow of success to Esha Deol's face.

And now a sensitive performance in "Main Aisa Hi Hoon" marks the arrival of an actress worth watching.

Says Esha happily: "I really worked hard on my role, look and performance in 'Main Aisa Hi Hoon'. I know I had very little to do. But I wanted to make the role memorable.

"I wanted this capricious character to look and behave like a lost neglected child in search of something that she doesn't know the existence of. I borrowed some of Sandra Bullock's performance in '28 Days'. She played a character who went for drug rehabilitation.

"I borrowed her mannerisms. As for the styling and clothes, it was very 'today', very young and trendy. I'm glad it worked. When you get a role where you get a chance to do something with your character you go for it. But a lot of times I'm offered roles that give me nothing to do.

"I've decided no 'faltu' (commonplace) roles for me. I'd rather stay home than do something I don't believe in."

She admits "Dhoom" turned her fortunes around. It also transformed her physical appearance.

"The character I played in 'Dhoom' needed to look a certain way. And somewhere Aditya Chopra felt I needed to change my image in the industry, that my looks needed a revamp. He could visualise my looking the way I did in 'Dhoom'. I trusted his vision completely."

Esha admits looking hot on screen wasn't easy.

"I come from a very conservative background. Both my dad and mom are extremely conservative. At home I've never worn those 'Dhoom' kind of clothes, except shorts to play football.

"But for 'Dhoom' I had to change my entire wardrobe. I was given ample time to get used to the new me. Now I'm very comfortable with my new svelte look."

But that doesn't mean Esha will do a "Dhoom" for no rhyme or reason.

"I'm a very blunt person. If I'm asked to show skin unnecessarily I'll put my foot down. No one can make me do what I don't want to. There was an item song in 'Kaal'. But not part of the plot."

She admits she was skimpily dressed in "Kaal".

"What to do? Audiences ko kuch to dena hai, tigers ke alava (audiences have to be given something else, apart from tigers)," she giggles.

Right now things seem to be going great guns for Esha.

She has just signed Meghna Gulzar's new film. "And it feels great. Because my mom did so many wonderful films with Meghna's dad Gulzar Saab. It's a very nice story about a couple. Meghna saw me in 'Yuva' and felt I'd suit the role."

Esha's face lights up when she speaks of Gulzar.

"I had gone to meet him before 'Dhoom'. He got me a teacher to coach me in Urdu.... In a way Meghna and I are both sailing in the same boat, being compared with our moms."

Now Esha is confident enough to face the camera with her mother.

"I'm glad I'm no longer seen as just another star-kid. I'm finally getting exciting roles. Earlier I was getting rather shabby roles. Some of the films I did were done for a lark. Yeah, I guess I'm happy now. I don't mind sitting at home. But I won't choose wrongly."

She still takes advice from her mom. She's also doing an English language film directed by Apoorva Asrani where she's playing a Punjabi girl in London.

"It's going to start in July and will be marketed worldwide. Now I want to be in films where I make a difference to the plot. I don't want to be in a position where I've to groan about going to work. The quality of work is encouraging.

"It's good to have people appreciating what I'm doing. Even when they weren't doing so it was fun. I felt I had to prove myself. I still do."

In "Yuva" Esha was the only actor common to both the Tamil and Hindi versions.

"When I was offered 'Yuva', the director's wife spoke to me in Tamil on the phone. I had no clue I was being tested. We speak Tamil at home. Both me and my sister speak it fluently. 'Yuva' was fun. I liked doing the naughty things that my character had to do."

Esha is taking it easy. "I'm going to be lambasted for some of my forthcoming films. But I'm having fun. It's fun being a brat."

At the moment Esha is single and fancy-free. "But my mom keeps saying I should go out more, find someone for myself. Isn't she the coolest?"

* Aman's casting couch case!

A local court today adjourned till June 15 the hearing on a criminal complaint filed by actor Aman Verma, who was caught in a sting operation on the presence of a ‘casting couch’ in Bollywood by a private channel.

After the channel aired the episode in March, the actor had filed the complaint with Andheri Metropolitan Court against India TV CEO Rajat Sharma, programme manager Suhaib Ilyasi and journalist Ruchi at Andheri Court.

Verma alleged that the channel wanted to "blackmail and extort money" from him, his lawyer Dipesh Mehta said.

In the complaint filed on March 28 this year, Verma said that Ruchi had called him several Times in December 2004 and told him she was an aspiring actress from New Delhi and intended to come to Mumbai to seek his assistance.

He said on December 17, 2004, Ruchi had come to meet him at his residence and enquired about the working of the film industry.

"After the conversation with her lasting around 15-20minutes, when I opened the door, Ilyasi and another man with a camera were standing outside," Verma said adding, Ilyasi said they had recorded the conversation and would telecast it if he (Verma) failed to agree to their demands.

Verma said for three months (before March) he had been receiving calls for various favours from a journalist, who was also issuing threats and making various demands for money.

The complainant urged the court to issue summons to the accused trio who are charged with various offences under IPC.

* Sikhs are not angry with me: Aishwarya Rai

Aishwarya Rai has expressed outrage over a British media report that she angered Sikhs while shooting at a London gurdwara, saying she "never plays with religious sentiments".

A story in the British paper Eastern Eye, which largely caters to Asians, suggested that there was trouble at the gurdwara when Aishwarya and co-star Naveen Andrews had gone to shoot for Jagmohan Mundhra's "Provoked".

Aishwarya told from London: "There have been so many completely false reports on my life and career. But this one takes the cake. There was absolutely no fracas, no tension and certainly no member of the Sikh community was provoked and angered.

"And you know what? This time the canard cannot be allowed to go by because it has to do with religious sentiments and I'm very, very careful that I never play around with those."

To the film crew's good fortune, the entire shooting of "Provoked" in the gurdwara was filmed by the BBC.

Says Aishwarya: "There's therefore documented evidence that there was absolutely no sign of trouble anywhere. Are we stupid to walk into a gurdwara with our heads uncovered and shoes on? I think some sections of the media really need to exercise self-control.

"Coming in the wake of trouble over that other film, "Jo Bole So Nihaal", this is sheer mischief and very damaging mischief. And we can't allow it to go scot-free."

Adds Murli Manohar, the producer of "Provoked": "To impute such irresponsible behaviour to us is to really belittle our sense of dedication and honesty to making films.

"We aren't here to instigate any individual or community. The crew for Provoked is almost completely British and therefore very, very particular about not hurting other culture and people's sentiments.

"Besides, we had all the required permission in writing before we went to the gurdwara. Once there, we came across the most amazing crowds waiting for a glimpse of Aishwarya. There was absolutely no trouble. And the BBC has filmed the whole incident for a documentary on Bollywood called 'Better Than Hollywood'."

Adds Aishwarya, "I'm truly tired of these stark lies. We are trying to make a film on the life of a very traumatised, very brave Sikh woman. Such false stories cannot help our cause. The fact is, when we went to the gurdwara, people came forward to support us in every way possible. They told me how to hold my dupatta right. They showed my co-star Naveen Andrews how to hold his sword in the correct position. The atmosphere in the gurdwara was supportive and affectionate, not at all confrontational."

So where did the story of irate Sikhs come from?

Explains the producer: "There were journalists from Eastern Eye at the gurdwara who wanted to meet Aishwarya. Because of the tight schedule she couldn't give them time. I think they went away angry and vengeful."

* Verma's publicity stunt for D!

Did alleged mobboss Chhota Rajan warn director Ram Gopal Varma against glorifying his rival Dawood Ibrahim in "D"?

The prolific filmmaker is amused.

"Of course not! And why on earth would I spread the news that I've been threatened? It doesn't make me look too heroic," he maintained.

According to a media report, Ramu did get a call from Rajan. But the prolific and fearless filmmaker denies this.

"I never got a call. It's a friend of mine who was contacted. The people who called this friend assumed he was associated with 'D'. Once my friend explained the story to Chhota Rajan he was fine with it. And that was that.

"I had forgotten about this incident until I read about it. Now people will assume I have orchestrated this story to get publicity for 'D'. But I had nothing to do with this story, or the call that Chhota Rajan made. My friend must have spoken about 'D' to his friends and it must have reached Chhota Rajan.

"As I've clarified, D isn't the story of Dawood or any other real-life character. In fact my hero Desu is a Hindu based in Mumbai, not a Muslim in Dubai. I repeat I never spoke to Nana (Chhota Rajan) on this matter," Varma maintained.

But doesn't the film's title "D" seem to suggest a reference to Dawood, whose organization is called the D-Company?

"It could be that my film's title suggests a link with Dawood. But, surely, the title alone can't decide the plot and fate of my film. I've never got my script okayed by anyone," Varma insisted.

"D" isn't the first Varma film to have underworld links. The highly acclaimed "Company" was loosely based on the friendship and rise to power of Dawood and Chhota Rajan and their eventual fall-out.

"Even then, I had heard that one or the other person was upset about my making the film. But I was never contacted then. And I haven't been approached now....But let me look at the brighter side. I hope at least 10 more tickets would be sold after this so-called controversy," Varma said.

* Aditya Bal: A new face

After a modeling career, Aditya Bal will be making his debut in movies soon with a Time Magnetics release Mashooka. But he gets quite irritated when people attribute the credits to him being designer Rohit Bal's nephew. He wants to make an identity for himself and does not want to be associated with his uncle in this manner. When he entered modeling, people thought he got through because of his uncle, but proved his talent by being there for many years. Aditya plays a lad who gets strayed and gets involved onto a one- night stand only to be black-mailed by the lady, who is none other than Meghna Naidu. Besides, he is all set for two more movies coming up. One is TEZ Entertainment's Rangeen and the other is Sach. However, his grand debut appearance happened when a talent search company spotted him and took him to Hollywood. He finished shooting for the film One Night With The King in Jodhpur where he plays a defeated warrior. This is something he can declare to the world. "It's given me an opportunity to interact with Peter O'Toole and Omar Sheriff", he proudly says. Good start for a newcomer!

* Madhavan: Oh goodie!

Looks like Madhavan is going to have a good time ahead, for a while at least. He is gonna turn 35 this month, is all set for his Tamil as well as a Hindi releases and, to top it all, is going to become a father soon. His wife is expecting their first child and he is too excited about it. "I will try to spend as much time with her as possible. It's a big moment for us", says the Papa-to-be. The actor was accompanied by his wife Sarita last week when he went to the US to play golf. He admits that golf is his biggest passion after wife and movies. He played golf at the Pebbles Beach which is the best for golf and also had to good time with his wife. On a professional basis, he has just finished a Tamil movie Thambi and is ready with his next Hindi release Ramji Londonwale. The latter is a comedy about a Bihari cook in London who is a major fan of Mr. Bachchan. It is to be directed by Sanjay Daima (Ashutush Gowarikar's former assistant). The film is a remake of a Kamal Hassan movie. Madhavan is proud to say, "The film is a tribute to two of my idols- Amitabh Bachchan and Kamal Hassan." The film is to be marketed and distributed by Columbia- Tristar.

* Ramu denies Rajan threat

Ramgopal Varma has denied that underworld don Chhota Rajan had called him. The call was allegedly in connection with Varma's D. "In the conversation that we had, Chhota Rajan wanted to know that D was made on the life of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim. I told him that the character of D was a Hindu. He had a Hindu name," said Varma. Rumors also suggested that Varma had organized a screening of D for a few men of the Chhota Rajan gang. But Ramu has outrightly trashed this report as false.

* Sikh object to Bunty Aur Babli

The Sikh community is irked once again. The Sikh Prabandhak Committee has raised objection against scenes showing Rani Mukherjee smoking in Bunty Aur Babli. According to the authorities, Rani Mukherjee plays the character Vimmi Singh who is a Sikh in the film and because she was playing a Sikh character it was wrong to show her smoking. The Sikh community has also raised objection to some portions of Jagmohan Mundra's Aishwarya Rai starrer Provoked in London. They alleged that the crew members shot with their shoes on and without covering their head in Gurudwara. The Sikh community has also demanded that they be included in the Censor Board.

* Ritesh replaces Saif

Nobody can help but notice Ritesh Deshmukh! After two hits, the actor is now amongst the cast of Rohan Sippy's forthcoming film with Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai. Apparently, Saif Ali Khan was supposed to play the role but after the script was finalized, Abhishek and Saif didn't fit together and hence, Ritesh was chosen instead. 'Bluff Master' is about male bonding but Rohan promises that Ash will have a significant part too. The director has worked with the leading pair in his debut film and wanted to work with them again. He starts shooting for the movie in June and will wind up within a month. "Since we are shooting in Mumbai, we should be able to complete it so that the dates don't get mixed", says Sippy. He also cannot stop raving about Ritesh. He says, "There is something very likeable about his personality and he definitely suits my film."

* Videocon's Bollywood Sensations Tour 29th May 2005
By Hinna Kausar ©2005 Bollyvista.com

Sensational! Is what the Bollywood Tour at the Birmingham NIA was as Shah Rukh, Salman Khan, Rani Mukherjee, Lara Dutta, Esha Deol, Tushar Kapoor and more performed in front of a fanatical crowd.

For the first time in 11 years history was in the making as Shah Rukh and Salman both took to the stage together, both presenting each other with the promoter's Videocon's 'Sensational Icon's 2005' award as well as 50inch Plasma Screens. With Shah Rukh referring to Salman as 'the Biggest Superstar' both did get quite sentimental, ending with hugs and handshakes.

Rani Mukherjee also picked up the award for 'Icon of Bollywood 2005' with the host Sajid Khan introducing her to the crowd chants of 'Rani! Rani!' she performed two songs from her latest movie. 'Kangana Re' from the film 'Paheli' and 'Dhadak Dhadak' from the film 'Bunty aur Babli'. Rani set the stage alight and sent the crowd into a frenzy as her dance sequences where performed.

All the latest songs were performed on the night with no exception to Salman Khan and his rendition of the scene in the wax work museum in the film 'Lucky' the costumes looked phenomenal and wax work models were used in the song 'Chori Chori' with Salman emerging from amongst the wax works. However the most anticipated act was that of course from the main star Shah Rukh Khan.

With the crowd uncontrollable this had to be the best performance of the night with Malaika Arora Khan and the dancers from the title song 'Kaal Dhamaal' Shah Rukh emerged suspended from the ceiling, amidst flames and fireworks. This eclectic performance of the title song was flawless with Shah Rukh's energy and stamina of the dance routines showed no letting up!

Not forgetting the song 'Tauba Tauba', also from the movie 'Kaal', which had Lara Dutta and Esha Deol both taking to the stage together in stunning white and silver outfits. The actresses also returned to perform individual acts with Malaika joining Lara for the song 'Koi Dilwale' from the film 'Khakee' for a risqué routine with their male dancers. Esha returned as well for her song 'Dhoom!' Complete with fireworks and with plenty of dancers she certainly managed to hold her own on stage and get the crowd involved.

From the risqué and raunchy acts to the comedic duo of both Tushar Kapoor and Ritesh Deshmukh both making their Uk debuts. With the title song of 'Kyaa kool hai hum' both performed together a fantastic double act. Also later returning for the song 'Ek Kunwara' from the film 'Masti' complete with bridge and groom onstage.

One thing that was impressive throughout was the apparent time and effort that was reflected in the excellent costumes of not only the stars but that of the backing dancers. From the flute players in Rani's act, to the backing dancers dressed as tigers in Shah Rukh and Malaika's act, no expense was spared and it showed throughout alongside the phenomenal lighting and on stage fireworks.

Yet although every actor performed individual song and dance routines from their films respectively, some of the audience felt cheated by the lack of participation by the big name superstars such as Shah Rukh and Salman, who both only performed one song each on the night, a duet was at least owed to the crowd! But this could have possibly been due to time constraints with a later than scheduled time start due to management difficulties arising.

Other awards that were presented on the night where to the designer Manish Malhotra who made a brief appearance as well as showcasing his designs for his new summer 2005 collection, and to Farah Khan which was presented by Shah Rukh Khan and received by her brother Sajid Khan who hosted the show throughout.

* "The Oprah Winfrey Show" on Star World
- indiantelevision.com

Star World has given the chat show with Oprah Winfrey a prime time slot. The show which it is calling Oprah Prime Time will air every Sunday at 8:30 pm from 5 June 2005.

Fittingly enough the first episode has a desi flavour to it. The queen of the chat show genre gets up close and personal with Aishwarya Rai. Earlier The Oprah Winfrey Show only aired on weekday mornings.

In this wide-ranging episode Rai said to be India's most stunning international export, shows Oprah a move or two in the traditional Indian sari. The two also chat about her aspirations in showbiz, her mission to dispel myths on Indian women, and her interpretation of what 'beauty' is. "To me, beautiful is as beautiful does. I think that's what speaks volumes," says Rai. On being asked about her views on the Indian women practicing Kamasutra, Ash promptly replies, "I call it the land of Kamasutra." And when asked about her views on arranged marriages Rai exclaims "I will cross the bridge when I reach it".

On a mission to dispel myths about Indian women Rai states, "The first time that I traveled overseas and interacted with people, the immediate response was to the way I spoke English. People wondered whether my education was in India, and they said, "No you must have studied outside of India". Why would people think that we don't study English?"

* For Bollywood, Sunil Dutt a 'true-blue messiah'
- ians

Legendary actor and politician Sunil Dutt who passed away earlier this week was regarded by one and all in the film fraternity as a generous, loving and kind person, always ready to lend a helping hand.

Amitabh Bachchan, who was cast by Sunil Dutt in his film "Reshma Aur Shera", recalled the by-now mythic generosity of the Dutts.

"It was actually Nargisji and Dutt Saab who were instrumental in getting me to Mumbai to try my luck in films. They treated me like a member of the family. Dutt Saab was the epitome of generosity and kindness. And to a newcomer these are qualities that go a long way in instilling much-needed self-confidence.

"When Dutt Saab cast me in his film 'Reshma Aur Shera', Raakheeji and I were both newcomers. But despite that, we were given absolutely equal treatment with the big stars while shooting on location in the Rajasthan deserts.

"I guess somewhere those values have remained with me. Today Sanju and his sisters have a father in me and a brother in Abhishek. And that's a bond we share unconditionally."

Karan Johar, who is in the US, cannot stop ruing the fact that he wasn't in India at a time when he needed to be near the Dutts.

"It's such a strange and depressing feeling. Dutt Saab died on my birthday. I woke up this morning to greetings from all my friends back home... and this devastating news. I know what it's like to lose your father. My hurt is still raw," he told IANS over telephone.

"I can imagine what Sanju, Namrata and Priya are going through right now. In fact, I didn't call Sanju immediately after I heard the news about Dutt Saab. I know how ineffectual words of sympathy are at a time like this. We always say good things about those who are gone. We forget about their negative qualities and focus on the positive.

"But in the case of Dutt Saab it's really true. "He actually had no blemishes. My father (producer Yash Johar) always said he's one of the finest human beings in the film industry. In many ways he was like my own father, always there to lend a helping hand. Within the film industry he was like a father-figure. A true-blue messiah."

Aishwarya Rai, who's shooting in London for the film "Provoked", recalled Sunil Dutt with tremendous affection. "It's so sad. I woke up to this news. A true loss. Dutt Saab was always there for all of us. Anyone in any kind of trouble, and you know whom to dial," she said.

"I think the whole industry looked up to Dutt Saab as a guiding light. He was a true leader. I know it's a loss for all of us. But to Sanju, Namrata and Priya, it's much more than just a loss," she said.

Rahul Bose added: "In the last one year Dutt Saab and I had got to know each other. We met at the National Integration For Youth event in Delhi. Then we met again for the Dandi March. Dutt Saab caught my hand and we marched and released doves together.

"I told him there was too much media attention around him and that I must leave. He smiled and said, 'No, the media attention is around you.'"

Two days ago his son-in-law called on behalf of Dutt Saab to invite me to a football match May 27. And then, this! He was so young at heart. Dutt Saab amazingly committed. Our friendship had just begun to develop. Our common interests on communal issues and concern for the Andaman-Nicobar islands would have kept us bonded."

* Aishwarya to play Maharani Gayatri Devi
by: Rachna Kanwar
- filmfare.com

Bollywood is going retro. Old films are getting re-launched and filmmakers are digging into History books for film subjects. Protagonists range from freedom fighters to forgotten royalty. JP Dutta has chosen one such ‘stunningly beautiful’ subject, Rajmata Gayatri Devi, the erstwhile Maharani of Jaipur for his forthcoming film.

He is in London where he joins the Rajmata for the research of his film. He has chosen ‘the most beautiful girl in the world’, Aishwarya Rai to play Gayatri Devi. The uncrowned Queen of Bollywood, Aishwarya Rai has been reported to be thrilled to bits about her new role. Gayatri Devi, too, has approved Dutta's choice.

Dutta would be relying on the Rajmata’s autobiography ‘A Princess Remembers’ for his film. Gayatri Devi was the Princess of Cooch Behar (West Bengal) before she married Maharaja Mansingh of Jaipur, in 1939.

Though known all over the world for her legendary beauty and grace, people in her home state love the Rajmata for the work she has done for them. She entered politics in 1962 as a member of the Swatantra Party and was jailed in 1972, during emergency. The royal lady with ethereal good looks, Gayatri Devi was named one of the most beautiful women in the world by Vogue magazine.

Similarly, even Ash was voted the most attractive woman of 2003 in a poll conducted by ‘Hello Magazine’. Recently, Aishwarya Rai has been voted as the 9th most beautiful woman in the world by the prestigious Harpers & Queen in a list comprising Angelina Jolie, Uma Thurman and others. She is recognised by the international media as India's most well known celebrity and has been interviewed by the likes of Oprah Winfrey and David Letterman.

* Shah Rukh will become a legend: Sunil Shetty
02nd June 2005 10.00 IST
By ApunKaChoice Bureau

He has worked with Shah Rukh Khan in only two films – the runaway hit Main Hoon Na and the forthcoming Paheli , but Sunil Shetty minces no words when he praises the King Khan.

Talking to a leading newspaper, Shetty describes his experience of working with SRK in these words: “Shah Rukh is absolutely brilliant. He is a real gem. I had a wonderful time working with him. He is an actor who has taken success the right way. People like him usually go on to become legends and I think he is well on his way to becoming one.”

Shetty says that he doing multi-starrers is not a career conscious decision but it is the need of the hour because “all the big films this year have been multi-starrers. Today, everything around is 'multi' faceted, whether it is multiplexes, multi-cuisine restaurants, or movies. This is the latest trend and we need to change with time.”

Shetty is working with Anil Kapoor for the first time in ‘Chocolate’, which has been entirely shot in London.

Apart from ‘Chocolate’, Shetty is also doing the sequel of the laugh riot Hera-Pheri titled ‘Phir Hera Pheri’ with Akshay Kumar and Paresh Rawal .

But Shetty says a film, which he is doing, and which is very close to his heart is ‘Amar Joshi Shaheed Hoke’ by Rajnish Thakur.

* Abhishek gets 1st hit abroad

Arthur J Pais in New York | June 02, 2005 10:38 IST

Abhishek Bachchan, with some help from his father, scored his first hit abroad as Bunty Aur Babli grabbed a solid $440,000 in four days over the Memorial Day weekend in America and about $300,000 in a three-day weekend in the United Kingdom.

The film was a fourth straight hit for the senior Bachchan in the overseas market.

The gross in the UK for Bunty Aur Babli was even more significant as the film was released there in 30 theatres and shot to the ninth position on the box-office chart.

In North America, it was shown in 51 theatres. Its four day gross nearly doubled what Dhoom, Abhishek's first hit, had taken in its four-week long run. Though the sexy action thriller was a strong hit in India, it had a disappointing run in North America and the UK, proving once again that the success of a film in India is not always mirrored overseas, particularly in the UK and USA. But Dhoom did much better in its DVD and VHS versions, partly sparking the interest in Bunty Aur Babli. The hit music helped, too.

Not to overlook Rani Mukherji's increasing popularity.

But above all, fans were eager to see the senior and junior Bachchans together in a film that seemed to be above the average Bollywood product.

Even Munnabhai MBBS was not a big hit in North America; it fared much better in the UK.

For Yash Raj Films, the movie's producer and its distributor on both sides of the Atlantic, the massive publicity has clearly paid off. There is a very good possibility that the movie will gross $1 million in North America and reach a similar status abroad.

Kaal, the previous film distributed by Yash Raj Films, was a disappointment. Normally movies without big stars go directly to video on both sides of the Atlantic. But Kaal opened in about 45 movie houses in North America and the United Kingdom because of its producers Karan Johar and Shah Rukh Khan. But the film opened to feeble numbers, and ended its run with about $400,000 in both territories.

Bunty Aur Babli is the fourth hit abroad in a row for Amitabh Bachchan following Veer-Zaara, Black and Waqt.
The last named film, heavily promoted by Bachchan and distributor Eros, has grossed about $2 million in the UK and US.

* SRK replaced Tom Cruise?
by Debasis Jana

While Yash Chopra's 'Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge' has become one of the longest-running movies in the history of Indian cinema, we have an interesting anecdote related to the trendsetter. It seems that Aditya Chopra was keen to take on a Hollywood actor for the role that Shah Rukh Khan eventually did. And the Hollywood actor they had in mind was (hold your breath) superstar Tom Cruise! According to a source in the Chopra camp, the original idea was to make a movie on an American man falling in love with an Indian girl. But on father Yash Chopra's insistence, Adi decided to choose SRK for the lead role instead. And the rest is history. DDLJ created records and SRK shot to stardom. We can't help wondering what would have happened if the film had Cruise control instead…

* Isha Sharvani to get hot with Bombay Rockers!
by Debasis Jana

Remember Isha Sharvani? Yeah, the same Subhash Ghai discovery, who acted opposite Vivek Oberoi in the not-so-successful 'Kisna'. Though the film didn't exactly set the box office on fire, Isha managed to get rave reviews for her dancing skills. And now we hear that the lady in question will be seen doing a sexy Jennifer Lopez-style dance number for an upcoming stage show. Keeping her company will be the Bombay Rockers (remember their chartbusting Teri Toh?), while Subhash Ghai's favourite choreographer Shiamak Davar will be 'designing' the song.

* Students blackened Shakti Kapoor's face!
by Debasis Jana

Shakti Kapoor is in news again, but not for good reason. Few months back, when India TV aired their first episode of casting couch on Shakti Kapoor, people thought of blackening the face of the on-screen black-role player, however it finally came true yesterday at Nagpur.
Recently Shakti was in Nagpur for a stage performance. There few students reportedly from the Congress' youth brigade National Students Union of India approached to honour him with garlands and a tilak. And Shakti accepted. However, he received a rude shock when, instead of showering flowers on his head, he saw the youngsters pour colour all over him. His whole face was badly blackened.
"I wasn't aware of their intention. They had a bottle of ink with them. They poured the entire contents on me and started shouted slogans like NSUI zindabad, (Long live the NSUI)" says the stunned actor.

* Three Bollywood actresses involved in sex racket!

At least three Bollywood actresses and several models are under the Delhi police scanner for their alleged involvement in Delhi's super pimp Kanwaljeet's sex empire, which apparently spanned several countries.
Kanwaljeet had named these actresses immediately after his arrest last month. According to sources, one of these actresses, who recently went to Singapore and Bangkok several times last year to entertain businessmen. She was apparently paid Rs 3 lakhs for each of these trips. Another actress who was apparently "registered" with Kanwaljeet comes from a family of starlets. * Brunettes top list of world beauties
by: Sherna Noah
- scotsman.com

Brunettes have won over blondes in a list of the world’s 100 most beautiful women.

The top five in the Harpers & Queen magazine list, compiled by 1,000 experts from the worlds of fashion, arts and the media, are brunettes.

Hollywood beauty Angelina Jolie topped the poll, followed by supermodel Christy Turlington, Queen Rania of Jordan, film director Sofia Coppola and domestic goddess Nigella Lawson.

Blondes such as supermodel Kate Moss, Kill Bill star Uma Thurman and Lost in Translation star Scarlett Johansson are in the top 100, but have been relegated out of the top five.

Harpers & Queen editor Lucy Yeomans said: “We were really surprised when the brunettes came out on top.

“But from our panel results, we witnessed a definite shift away from the traditionally deified blonde stereotype.

“Instead, people with a more unusual and interesting beauty ranked higher.

“We encouraged people to vote on the all-round package, rather than on physical beauty alone, so it was great to see less obvious beauties such as film director Sofia Coppola making the top five.

“Nigella Lawson scored very highly amongst both men and women – they commented on both her sensual beauty and her intelligence.”

Leading plastic surgeons were also polled for the magazine’s top 100.

They noticed a move away from women wanting to correct small facial irregularities and towards small imperfections.

Dr Peter Fodor, a cosmetic surgeon in the US, said: “Patients are looking for a stronger, Roman nose, or ‘character nose’, as some put it.”

Aishwarya Rai, the Indian actress who played the lead in Bride and Prejudice, is ninth in the poll of the 100 Most Beautiful Women of Today.

British actress Charlotte Rampling, 60, who recently hit out at the “barbaric” ageism of Hollywood, is 11th, followed by Beyonce, the Destiny’s Child star 37 years her junior.

Statuesque blonde actress Cate Blanchett is 13th, followed by another blonde – Johansson – and Ziyi Zhang, the Beijing-born star of House of Flying Daggers.

Model Sophie Dahl is 16th, before Star Wars actress Natalie Portman, a brunette.

Lord of the Rings star Liv Tyler, known for her raven locks, is 18th, followed by blonde model Gisele Bundchen and the raven-haired actress Jennifer Connelly.
