Age factor creates rift between TV couples

With Sachin and Supriya winning high points in the second round too, there is trouble brewing on the sets of Nach Baliye.

The younger couples feel the older ones (including Parmeet and Archana)are being favoured by judges Saroj Khan, Farhan Akhtar and Malaika Arora Khan. Sources say actors Shakti Anand and Sai Deodhar are sulking over this and losing out on the sporting spirit.

Old is gold?

When quizzed about it, Shakti Anand says frankly, “It’s quite natural that the sympathies are going to be with the older couples. It’s human nature to get awe-struck at older couples shaking a leg. I’m sure it overwhelms the judges. But we are enjoying it and not cribbing or complaining.”

Archana disagrees
However, the older block feels otherwise. Says Sachin Pilgaokar, “We can’t have control over others’ thinking abilities. I think it’s natural to feel threatened. You only sympathise with people who are unfortunate and not with someone who is leading.”

With Sachin and Supriya’s jodi reigning, more couples believe it is the age factor that matters. Dismissing all such possibilities, Archana Puran Singh says, “I agree that at times, judges might give that extra mark or two. But it’s not a case of gross over-marking. You can’t win a contest like that. At the end of the day, you have to prove your mettle.”

Battling it out

An insider says, “It all started as a big picnic, but gradually, the tension is getting to them with the rising pressure and the competition getting tougher. But it’s not that bad yet for the couples to get into a fight. I agree Sai and Shakti are taking it a little hard, but at least they are talking about it openly.”

While Sachin adds, “ It’s definitely a healthy sign. When you are envious of someone, it means you aspire to match up to them. Even I’ve experienced the same thing in my career. It only helps you improve.” Adds Shakti Anand, “Neither Sai nor I are frantic to win the show. We respect the judges and their scores.”

Nach gang: Our designer is an Anna-conda!

The set of Nach Baliye (Star One) is turning out to be a battleground of sorts — first designer and stylist Anna Singh made a hullabaloo about her “fashion philosophy clash” with the telly couples, now the actors have taken out their claws.

The women contenders on the show are complaining about the “cheap robes” they are forced to wear and “Anna’s snobbish and non-cooperative attitude.”

The latest development

Anna Singh
In a bid to make peace, the channel has asked the couples to opt for their own designers, which means that Anna Singh will soon be replaced. Says an actor on the grounds of anonymity, “In all probability we’ll have new designers from the fourth round.”

Snooty designer for us

Apparently, right from the outset of the show Anna Singh would look down upon the dressing sense of the individual couples. An insider informs that she even went to the extent of taunting a few actors for their “bulky bodies.”

Asserts an actor, “Just because she has done costumes for Bollywood doesn’t mean that we are losers and are capable of nothing.”

Adds another couple, “As television people we are always stressed for time. She never adjusts with our schedules. She’d cancel appointments if we requested her to delay it by 15 minutes. We’ve told the channel that we want to switch over to other designers.”

Poor outfits

The television couples continue to rue about the fact that they are dressed “very poorly without paying any attention to body types.”

Says a choreographer, “Thursday’s show had Saroj Khan complaining about our couple looking ugly in their outfits. Anna has to be blamed for this. In spite of repeatedly telling her, she turned a deaf ear.”

Budget problems

The actors also allege that Singh has been charging the channel a bomb, “She charges Rs 15,000 for a woman’s outfit and Rs 10,000 per men in each round. The designer also refused to provide any accessory attributing it to “tight budget of the channel.” But not everybody is mad at Anna.

Delnaaz Paul is almost indifferent, “Honestly, I’m just about ok with the clothes that Anna’s providing me. It’s true that a lot of people are not happy. But if the channel now wants to replace her, it’s completely their call. As long as I get proper outfits that suit me I’m fine with any designer.”

My foot

Confirms another couple, “We were even asked to carry our own footwear. If we didn’t approve any outfit, Anna would try to convince us by using fancy names. We’ve spotted her team members picking up roadside stuff and then throwing it on us saying that it’s an exclusive range. This is ridiculous.”

Anna Singh defends the charges

Says the designer in distress, “The budgets are really tight and I’m negotiating with them to provide value for money. But I must say that there are a few troublemakers who want to wear designer branded stuff.

They must realise that television can’t afford what Bollywood can. As far as roping in another designer is concerned, I’ve no idea. I’ve been doing the clothes till date and have not heard anything from the channel.”

Delnaz down with asthma!

Nach Baliye seems to be taking a toll on the health of contestants! First, it was Mihir Misra, who hurt his back while practising for the show, now, it's Delnaz and Rajiv, who are suffering from varied ailments.
Delnaz Paul was taken to Sanghvi hospital by her hubby, Rajiv as she suffered severe asthma attacks and stomach ache. Rajiv, too is not keeping well, with his knees giving him trouble! The doctors have told him to rest completely for three weeks, but his Nach Baliye commitments does not allow him to do so.
Amit Sadh, who was recently in bed with high fever, had to forego his rehearsals to get back in shape. Shilpa Sakhlani too was tired juggling her different shoots!
Sources tell us that the left footed couples were involved in some accidents on the stage as well! To add to their woes, there was a costume problem recently, something that Sachin takes in his stride --"Women will always have problems with costumes, anywhere, anytime," laughs Sachin.
And this is not all, following the leak of the couple voted out last week, put the entire team off. "What was done was wrong! The curiosity of the audience was mislaid when the news was out. We immediately had a meeting regarding this issue, so that it does not happen again in the future," says Rajiv.
Heavy rehearsals, packed with many goof ups and all sorts of painstaking incidents is now what Nach Baliye is all about! However, the curiosity, excitement and spirit is still alive in the Nach Baliye couples -- their determination and hunger for victory, have added that extra spice to the show!

Malaika's thumbs-up for Nach couples

Malaika Arora Khan has literally danced her way to fame. From dancing on trains to driving people to dive under the train, with her low marks and remarks to the dancing pairs, the lady does everything in style. Here, Malaika talks about the Nach Baliye experience...

I am enjoying myself

The day Star One approached me with the idea of judging Nach Baliye, I said yes instantly. It’s an absolutely novel idea and I am enjoying every minute of it. There’s not been a minute when I’ve felt bored and wondered why I’m here.

What I love about the show are the surprises… It’s full of them. A high-ranking couple on one show could score low on the other week. Or a low-scoring couple could top the charts. Honestly, I can never predict how a particular couple will perform till I see them on stage.

Being a judge is tough

I’ve always been on the other side of the fence — dancing, interacting with choreographers or even being on stage myself. Judging a dance show for couples who are personalities in their own right is tough — even for me. Credit goes to the choreographers who have done a fabulous job.

The 20-lakh prize to the award-winning choreographer along with the spotlight on them will work wonders for new talent. It will push them to give their best every week. I like the way they’ve seriously taken all the critical comments, we judges give; and have worked on every itty-bitty aspect.

If I had to dance with Arbaaz…

But, let me be honest, it’s not easy dancing with your own partner — no matter how accomplished a dancer one may be. It’s another story dancing with choreographers, or dancing alone.

Dancing with your partner is by no means, a cakewalk! If I had to dance in a competition with Arbaaz, I would have sleepless nights and butterflies in my stomach.

When Arbaaz and I shot our only video together for Shubha Mudgal, we had a great time, but it was definitely not without its share of trying moments! We took liberties with each other that we wouldn’t with anyone else. We snapped, lost our cool, and egged each other on to get it right on the sets.

Everybody wants to win

The couples have their good days and bad days. I’ve seen them working together to get it right, smiling, getting worked up — the whole hog — during their rehearsals. It’s also tough to know that maybe your partner had a bad performance, and that may impact your chances of making it. These ten couples are truly brave and gutsy. After all, lets face it — everybody wants to win!

Comedy is the toughest

Eventually, it’s team effort that counts, as the dance themes each week keep getting tougher. As a dancer, I think the third round tonight with its comedy theme is the toughest.

It’s easy to express yourself on a sensuous song or even shake to a folksy number or dance on a disco version, but a comic song is tough.

Bad enough, you have to dance and emote — here, you also have to make the judges and the audiences laugh with you! If you tune in to tonight’s episode at 9 pm, you will see the couples get their comic timing right and dance their guts out. And I assure you, like the rest of us, you will not be able to stop laughing at all!”

Nach Baliye airs Tuesday to Thursday 9 pm, only on StarOne.

Sai, Shakti out of Nach Baliye

Tonight on Nach Baliye, the second pair to be voted out will be Sai Deodhar and Shakti Anand.

The duo didn’t exactly have a smooth sailing — in the first round, the couple came under heavy criticism, especially from Saroj Khan, for not being in tune with the song — Just Chill.

However, in the sensuous round, they were cheered by all three judges, for showing drastic improvement when they gyrated to Dhak Dhak Karne Laga.

In tonight’s comedy round, Shakti dresses up as Mehmood and dances to Muthu kudi kawadi hada. Here’s hoping the two had a great time, as long as it lasted.
khushi_897
Sai, Shakti unplugged on Nach Baliye

Sai Deodhar and Shakti Anand have been in the industry long enough to have made their mark.

As actors, they have proved their capabilities on various shows, but as dancers, they didn’t exactly win the hearts of the judges on Star One’s Nach Baliye.

The second couple to be voted out of the show, here’s Shakti and Sai unplugged…

Shakti Anand

I think both Sai and I were complete misfits for Nach Baliye. The confidence we shared was read as arrogance, or over-confidence. In the first round, all the other couples were shivering and had butterflies in their stomach, but we have both performed on stage in many shows, so were used to the whole idea.

I think some couples forgot that it was a reality show, and not a soap. It was sad to see couples crying and making a hullabaloo about their injuries. Sai has asthma and I suffer from backache, but we didn’t ever use our ailments to our advantage.

For me, the show was about entertaining and making audiences laugh. I didn’t want the viewers to say, “He cries on other shows, and here he is doing the same thing.” I like watching comedy, or a show that makes me smile and have a good time. Among my favourite shows on TV is the Great Indian Laughter Challenge; sometimes, when I can, I catch parts of Sarrkar (Zee).

Also, we never did any retakes for any of our songs, while some couples redid their numbers four or five times. We believed in giving one solid performance and letting the judges rate it. I didn’t understand why the judges had to give standing ovations to certain performances and make them into emotional sob stories.

In fact, when Sai and I were voted out, we started dancing and smiling, instead of hugging and crying. We wanted to rock the show, and that’s what I believe we managed to do till the end.

I had great fun working with actors I don’t think I would ever have been able to share the screen with. I think there is a tough fight between Varun Badola-Rajeshwari and Sachin-Supriya to take home the trophy.

Sai Deodhar

I have had a passion for dance from childhood; Shakti too enjoys grooving on stage. Whatever criticism we got was uncalled for because we performed really well; I still believe we should have won.

There was no competition for me; I always aimed at bettering myself with each round. I think our first song, Just Chill, got low ratings because we went with a theme; it was different from the others.

I have no regrets about being part of the show and have always thanked Star for considering me a part of their family. I wish the rest of the contestants well, and hope the best one wins. I don’t think I will be voting for anyone, though.

New designers for Nach Baliye

Bollywood designer Anna Singh is out of Star One’s game show, Nach Baliye.

The new list of designers — who start work from the fourth round — on the show now reads:

1. Archie: For Varun Badola-Rajeshwari Sachdev and Parmeet Sethi-Archana Puran Singh
2. Komal: For Manish Goyal-Poonam Narula Goyal, Apoorva Agnihotri-Shilpa Saklani
3. Bipin Tanna: Mihir Misra-Maninee De
4. Shabina Khan: Rajeev and Delnaz Paul
5. Anshu: Sachin and Supriya Pilgaonkar
6. Navin Shetty: Amit Sadh and Shabbir Ahluwalia
7. Rakhi: Sangeeta Ghosh

When contacted, Singh blamed only Sai Deodhar and Shakti Anand. “Sai and Shakti started it all; it became an issue from there. They were simply not creatively involved with what I wanted them to wear. They always wanted to wear something else… they had so many issues. Other couples were very sweet.”

Is she disappointed? “It’s okay. I have put Nach Baliye behind me. It was supposed to be a good thing for me that would last, but it did not. Now I have Sooraj Barjatya’s Vivaah. I am out of the show, and ditto for Sai and Shakti.”

Sai was unavailable for comment. But Shakti offered, “I don’t know why Anna is saying this about us now. Last time I met her, she was very sweet to me. As for the discontentment part, I would say that everybody has his own mind and choices. I think many couples were not comfy with her. We used to talk about it sometimes, between ourselves.

Annaji is from films and there’s no bound script in Nach Baliye. There was a concept and a theme in every round. I think the misunderstanding stems from there.”

Who do they design for?

Rakhi generally designs for Aamna Shariff and Shweta Tiwari. Navin Shetty designs for Suneil Shetty and Sanjay Dutt; Shabina Khan handles Shahid Kapoor’s attire; Komal designed the outdoor promo campaign for Nach Baliye. While Archie assists Vikram Phadnis, Anshu designs for a few personalities from Bollywood.

Rajeshwari faints on the sets of Nach Baliye

They are called the hottest pair on the dance show that seems to have become a rage. Every successive week Rajeshwari Sachdev and Varun Badola's performance has only gotten better. Choreographer-cum-judge Saroj Khan even gave them a standing ovation. But this week there was a tumult of a slightly different kind. Apparently Sachdev fainted in her vanity van a few minutes before her performance.

The duo was scheduled to perform first and despite severe health problem, the actress went ahead with her performance. “I was on my way to the set and I had a sudden vertigo attack, due to which I even threw up,” she explained. After gaining consciousness, Sachdev was disoriented for the entire day. “It was damn difficult. But I didn't tell the judges that I was unwell as that would have made it awkward for them and me as well,” she says.

She says that she didn't want to make an issue out of it and decided to do her best. “After fainting, one does feel disoriented throughout the day and I actually performed, which obviously wasn't up to the mark.” The couple's performance, following the incident, was a bit short of its usual competence, but they continue to remain on the show. “I could have asked the concerned people to postpone my performance as it was immediately after I fainted. But doing that would have meant chickening out and I certainly didn't want to do that,” Sachdev says.

The talented actress has recovered, and is all set to dance in the forthcoming episodes of Nach Baliye. “As an actor, I take criticism more seriously than applause. Everyone has been so appreciative of our performance. The pressure of living up to their expectation is on us. I seriously hope that we continue to do our best and don't let them down.” The actress has been taking dancing lessons since she was six, and her husband, Varun Badola, too, makes sure that he gets his steps right. That's exactly what makes them the judges and the audiences' favourite.

Prize ke liye kuch bhi karega

The flavour of the season, Star One’s dance show, Nach Baliye, has become a do-or-die issue for the contestants.

Like politicians in an electoral fray who leave no stone unturned to swing the scale in their favour, the participating star couples are hell-bent on doing anything and everything possible to bag the crown — apart from seeking divine intervention.

Pay now, win later

The contest has turned out to be a prestige issue for the contestants on account of the windfall cash prize and participation fees (see box). Several participants are buying prepaid mobile phone cards in bulk and distributing them to family and friends to keep on SMSing during the required time period.

When there is Rs 50 lakh at stake as prize money, there is no harm in spending a couple of hundreds or thousands on prepaid phone cards for sending messages round the clock.Sachin’s cable connection

While tempers are rising behind the scenes between some couples, the contestants are even seeking cable operators’ help. Sachin and Supriya Pilgaonkar have been advertising ‘Vote for Sachin-Supriya’ in the hinterlands of Maharashtra.

Says a source, “I’ve heard that Sachin and Supriya are canvassing through the local cable operators in Pune. Apparently, they are trying to garner the Maharashtrian votes.” It has been observed that a lot of regional voting is taking place. Like the Punjabi contestants are getting plenty of support from the North while Bengalis are receiving tremendous support from Kolkata.

When asked, Sachin vehemently denied his cable connections. “A lot of people are saying this about Supriya and me. But I have’nt indulged in any such practice.” However, a male contestant offered, “I have heard that the Pilgaonkars are advertising in Kolhapur also.”

Neeru’s a Punjabi kudi

When co-contestant Neeru Bajwa was asked if she knew about the Pilgaonkars seeking cable help, she says, “I’m unaware of what the Pilgaonkars are doing.

But someone told Amit and me the other day that we need to improve our PR. We don’t have too many friends and relatives, here. My family’s in Canada. Guess I need to go to Punjab for a few days to remind my folks that I am a Punjabi kudi after all,” she laughed.

Archana Puran Singh appeared surprised but said that Sachin and Supriya were not doing anything wrong. “It’s a very prestigious contest and we live in a free country.”

And for Star One, a sure-fire way to get noticed and rake in the high viewership ratings.

What the other contestants are doing for the big win

1. Apoorva Agnihotri’s family, who is based in Kanpur, has set up hoardings requesting people to vote for their local couple. In fact Apoorva and wife Shilpa Saklani (her broken tooth has been fixed) visited Kanpur on Friday and interacted with the locals.

2. Manish Goyal was part of a roadshow in New Delhi. His family is based in the capital.

3. Delnaz Paul’s actor brother Bakhtyar Irani has been canvassing fervently on behalf of his sister and brother-in-law, Delnaz and Rajiv Paul.

4. Parmeet Sethi and Archana Puran Singh’s two sons are spreading the SMS word among their school friends.

5. Neeru Bajwa and Amit Sadh will be visiting gurudwaras to seek blessings on Wednesday. Interestingly, Sadh who used to work as a security guard in a New Delhi store has requested his former colleagues to muster support.

6. Couples like Varun Badola- Rajeshwari Sachdev, Mihir Misra-Maninee De who have family members out of Mumbai have requested all and sundry to SMS for them.

Rs 50 lakh
The amount that the winning Nach Baliye couple will win.

Rs 16 lakh
The amount the couples have been paid as appearance fees on the show in commensurate with their telly status. It is learnt that each couple has been paid Rs 16 lakh to be part of the show. The amount will increase by a couple of lakhs as the couples progress in every round.

Anybody can win: Farhan
I’ve never been a television buff — at least not programmed television. So, I really came on the show not knowing what to expect of the couples.

I didn’t even know of their television personalities. It’s taken me three episodes to really know them and have a certain expectation when their names are announced and they walk on to dance…. But, so far it’s been fun!

The last four weeks have been insane. Everywhere I’ve gone, everyone I meet — the one question that people constantly ask me is, which couple got voted out!

It’s disappointing as a judge to see couples lose. I knew Rohit and Manasi (Roy) before I came on the show, and it’s a bit sad that they got voted out on a day when they had really upped their act and worked hard.

Even Amit and Neeru, whose first performance on Tauba Tauba left me quite bewildered, have redeemed themselves so well in the last two to three rounds. With Sachin and Supriya, there is a bit of a rewind and attachment from having seen them on screen, and I am always keen to see how they perform….

Overall performance

As a judge, I often look at their performances in the entirety. I ask myself whether I would have enjoyed watching this song or directing it if it was in my film. For me, it’s the overall performance and what it makes me feel, that’s important.

How well the couples work, how much the choreographer has understood them, the effort they put in and the amount of fun are they having when they are on stage… all that needs to come through.

I love shooting songs

I really can’t sympathise with couples that don’t put in enough effort into their performance. I am sure they have crazy shooting schedules with numerous soaps, commitments and more… but I do think if you can’t make time, rehearse and give it your best, then you shouldn’t be on the show.

Or at least, hope to win the title! It’s a bit like me wanting to make a film, and then mid-way realising you don’t really like the story! As a director, I love shooting songs — they are the least stressful time for me while I am making a film. In fact, I know it’s a good song and will work with audiences when I want to jump in and dance with my actors.

They’re all good!

So far, I’ve felt the same in the comedy round with Rajeshwari and Varun. In my mind, the comedy round was so the toughest so far. Getting your timing, act, dancing together is by no means easy. The way I see it, from here on, anybody could win the title.

They are all good, they all seem to be driven to deliver their best and any one of these couples can take the Rs 50 lakh away! From now on, its focus and consistency which will differentiate the winner from the rest…. And of course, India will decide!

On a reality show like this, viewers tend to pick their choices early, maybe without really allowing the days’ performance to judge their scores. So like us judges, I hope India votes for couples who are really worthy of their votes!

Neeru-Amit out of Nach Baliye

Tonight’s episode of Star One’s Nach Baliye will see Neeru Bajwa and Amit Sadh bearing the brunt of the elimination process, despite winning accolades for their leg-shaking act in the retro round.

It has been a tough battle for the couple, especially in the wedding round, where they dropped their choreographer, Alias, a few days before the final performance.

Confirms Sadh, “We started off on the wrong note. Things were getting more difficult, and communicating with Alias was a bigger problem. The production house and the channel also had some issues with him. It was a mutual decision that we took, and Swarup (choregrapher for Sai Deodhar and Shakti Anand) choreographed our piece for tonight’s episode.”

Delnaaz-Rajiv: Nothing that I can think of.
